Bah. It's all a bunch of crap. We can't change anything. So why get so stressed out over it? It's akin to attempting to boil the ocean with a hair-dryer. Completely futile waste of time and energy.

Do like me... say "^^^^ it" and just go enjoy your own life and whatever hobbies and vices keep you going. The rest is so much white noise.

You just need a better hair dryer Carl.

After reading through the now locked abortion topic thread, I realize how much I am just disgusted with how people think... at least many of them. I just don't understand how anyone, regardless of belief or ideals, can view the death of anyone as a good thing.

Hell, I even felt a little remorse when I watched the video of Saddam H. being executed. And I actually FOUGHT a war against the guy! He did unspeakable things, but did I find any satisfaction whatsoever in his death? No.

I can understand the tensions people have in this country about when life begins, what is the "right" way to do things regarding abortion... gay rights, etc. But to applaud the death of anyone is really sick to me.

The world is full of people, with various religious beliefs, with various moral standings, various political leanings. Some people do things that we may not condone, or may not agree with. It doesn't give us the right to judge and execute them based on a belief. Or even to smile and pump our fists in the air when someone else does so.

I just want to reiterate that this isn't a political thread, nor is it about abortion or anything close to it. It's really about how people can take something so pure, like belief... and turn it to selfish and evil ends.

What does it take for a human to interpret the words in the Bible? Which in turn were interpretations of the word of God... if they were at all, and not just the creation of man entirely. ;)

How can anyone use an interpretation to punish others? It's happened many times in history, the Inquisition, the Witch Trials, the Plague, the Crusades, the list goes on and on. Just like any good literature, one can take away many different lessons from the text. So how can anyone use this to judge anyone??

Religion and death has gone hand in hand for centuries, and it's really bothersome to me that it continues even though man has come so far. We really ARE beasts, aren't we? How can we deny it? We kill one another with impunity, we visit all manner of atrocities on our brothers without remorse. And yet some still believe we aren't connected to animals via ancestry.

It's sickening to me that we still cling to this idea that somehow we can decide what is right for ALL mankind, that the power to do so resides in ONE groups ideas of justice or right and wrong. Why can't we see that the answers do not rest in any book or doctrine but rather in the world itself and the lessons that time has to teach us? We will never move forward if we can't look at things through more scientific eyes, and make rational decisions that will benefit the greater number of people without excess suffering.

And if this thread needs to be locked, so be it. If I have to lose my mod powers, so be it. This is a discussion board, and dammit I feel like discussing this. If you too want to join me, go ahead. If not, move along.

Mom's gonna fix it all soon.
Mom's coming round to put it back the way it ought to be.

Just catching up on this thread. I just gotta say "Wow!" Are you comparing a chicken egg to a human embryo?
Mmmmmm...quick to hate we are....
I know...it was a bad joke..:monkey2

I am taking a human dev. class, so I've learned a lot about this subject. I honestly don't think there is a right answer at all, no way it can be solved. It's too sensitive a thing to place in a box.

I agree that it's disgusting and should have strict limits, and anything beyond a month is just wrong on other levels to me.

Stop hatin on those who have different opinions. It'll make ya feel better.

Whenever I get disgusted with humanity, I just watch some Star Trek and get back in the fight. :rock

my father-in-law made me laugh last time he was in town when he said
"You know what faith is dont you? ...... believing in something you know is not true" ......

I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do because I notice it always coincides with their own desires.

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.

Religion began when the first scoundrel met the first fool.

The problem with humanity is human nature. The first big mistake is to believe that we are a highly evolved species, because we are still just animals with potential. Too often we give in to base impulse, like the urge to kill, and for that matter why the main use of the internet is porn. Arrogance is by far mankinds greatest failure.
Religion itself is has been more of a force for good than bad. People on their own will justify their actions. We can rationalize anything if it means satisfying our desires. Just like the guy who felt that he was justified killing this doctor. He says that by killing one, he is saving many. Just like the woman who feels justified killing her unborn child because its inconvenient. For the most part, abortions are the result of irresponsibility. The 'parents' have many choices before that child is conceived. They choose to be with someone who can be a good spouse and parent, they choose to accept their actions can produce a child, they choose whether or not to abstain, they choose to use contraception or not. Once the child is conceived she wants to execute another choice after passing on all the other ones, saying its a responsible decision after all their previous actions say they have been irresponsible. That child is defenseless and is being killed by the person, who genetically speaking should defend it. In China countless female children are aborted over the preference of sons. There is also talk of genetically manipulating embryos to determine hair and eye color. Will they be aborted if the colors don't match mommy's purse? Look at the belly of a pregnant woman. There is less than an inch of flesh separating the child from the world. Is being on either side of that thin layer what determines if you are a child or an embryo? I am a man and many women say that dismisses me from the debate. The pro Choice argument is that this is a womans choice, but there are TWO people involved here. A woman and an embryo that will naturally become a human UNLESS someone takes an active role interfering. Now men may not be able to understand the womans point of view, but we sure as hell can identify with the child since we are all former embryos.

In the end, it is human nature that is the villain, and most religion teaches man to battle the nature of his flesh and his desires. Religion has done more good than bad in the development of society. The problem stems arrogance. People believing God owes them a definitive description of how everything works, and that leads to literal translations of religious text. Islam is often looked at as a source of terrorism, when in fact it is probably the most strict of the major religions about telling people how they should behave and resist their temptations. The murderer in this case is a murderer, not a Christian. If he had followed what he was taught he wouldn't kill. Instead, he chose to ignore the religion and follow the impulse.

Clearly most people, on their own, cannot develop a moral compass to lead them through the swampy mess of ethical decisions they need to make on a daily basis. Most people aren't capable of controlling what they eat much less what they do. Most people refuse to look at their actions to find the selfish motivations behind them. We can all justify any action we choose, but ultimately we choose the path that appeals to us selfishly rather than because its right or wrong.
Mankind for the most part isn't much past the stone age, we just have shinier toys.

Even though both of these threads are controversial and people get heated I do think it's a good thing to discuss serious matters. Your brain needs different and less trivial foods to digest every once in a while.
