holy crap... has anyone heard from him? i think he got snikted
If the deal goes through, I'll be shocked if everything post-Dark Phoenix doesn't get scrapped. X-Force isn't even in pre-pro yet. Neither are X-Factor Investigations or Gambit.
Verbinski's film is a Mutant Massacre film. For me that's the best X-Men crossover of all time. Naturally they're making Gambit the star. There's your movie. If you haven't read it, do yourself a favor. Its X-Men at its best.
Its an X-Factor Investigations detective story. The first onscreen Detective story starring Marvel characters. The X-Factor Investigations books are arguably one of the best written Marvel runs in the last 20 years. Madrox is superb in that run and Franco's a fan. A Marvel detective story would be much like Deadpool (comedy) and Logan (neo-western) - transcendent via its respective subgenre.
Boone's mutants aren't replacing the X-Men in any way though. They're a separate crew like X-Force, X-Factor Investigations and Excalibur. XMA was a weak film but it ended with the X-Men [finally] looking very much like the X-Men. What makes you think they won't "look and sound like X-Men" in a film set 10 years after XMA?
I've said this for years, but the FF would fit Marvel Studios like a glove. I would love to see that. But X-Men would get such short shrift there. And you wouldn't see a risk like Deadpool get taken, for better or worse. Having said that, I would be very curious to see the direction Marvel Studios would take with the X-Men, which characters and storylines they would pull from, whether they would keep the dark undertones or not, etc. But if they tried to change them wholesale into a jokey, fun-loving comedic outfit like the Guardians, Thor, Iron Man, etc., then I would have some real problems. With possible exceptions like Deadpool, early Iceman, or maybe Beast, these aren't characters suited to having dance-offs with their arch-villains.

On another note, Xavier was ahead of his time. Could have been president. Good fodder for Marvel Studios to make their movies topical.

that's a **** face smile there if I've ever seen one!
If the deal actually gets made in time, I wonder if they'll do like an end credits kind of thing where they reference like Galactus or F4 or something.
