Just watched Planet of Fire with Peter Davidson and was impressed by that episode on a multitude of counts. 1)Good story and script 2)they killed off a companion (albeit a lame one in Kameleon) 3)killed (at least apparently) the Master 4)said goodbye to a companion (Turlough) in a fairly satisfactory way and 5) introduced a funny new companion in Peri. At least she started off impressive with how she stood her ground against the Master. Loved when the Master said, "you will listen to me I am the MASTER." And she replied, "well my name is Peri ___, and I can yell just as loud as you can!" :lol good stuff.

Planet of Fire is a great episode, one of the few fifth Doctor episodes I enjoyed. Peri started well but fizzled a bit before her departure, the camera seemed glued to her body during her first few shots :rotfl

Kamelion was a great idea poorly executed, constrained by a small budget I guess.

What was surprising to me in regards to Kameleon was exactly how sophisticated it was. You could hardly pull off Kameleon TODAY using digital programming let alone 1984 or whatever using an analog tape.

The fact that they had seemingly no interest in doing a stripped down version was strange. It was like they wanted their own 100% working C3P0 with no human involvement aside from recording an audio tape or not at all...yet they are more than ok using "puppets" or mannequins and costumed actors for Daleks and Cybermen.

If they had just mocked up a puppet it could have been a very doable character.

I always assumed they were both concurrently canon. I seem to remember reading some trekkie novelization when I was a kid that talked about Time Lords.

In other news, it is looking like Sophia Myles is going to be the new companion.

I dunno about that, it would be lame if she was playing a different character then the Girl in the fireplace, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did do that as they have done it before with both Freema and Karen.( but there characters were very minor compared to Sophias)

She was in a one off episode almost 5 years ago. I have no issues if this turns out to be true. I just hope she has no relation to present day Earth or Earth at all for that matter.

I dropped into Gallifrey Base just to see what people were saying about the crossover, but all I found was a merged thread filled with nothing but "Why is this being posted here?" and "How can this be? Star Trek is FICTION!!!" posts. :dunno :banghead

I'm just gonna hang here for my Who discussion needs.
:grouphug

If the Sophia Myles news is true, I'll be happy. Unfortunately, that means we'll be hearing the "Why no aliens?" and "Why no male?" complaining for another season.

I'm fine with Sophia Myles. She was great in Girl in the Fireplace, and I think it's smart to go with a more mature companion after Karen Gillan. I'd love to see her played as a straight man to Matt's zany Doctor as opposed to everyone in the TARDIS being kinda kooky and hyper.

Word. To. Your. Mother.

I would like it if she was, it's not like other people havn't played more than one role in Who before, even Colin Baker himself was in the show before he became the Doctor.

Shes older than Karen yet younger and much less haggard looking than Tate so i think she would fit the 'best friend' companion role really well without ever touching the 'unrequited/in love/just a quickie' trait the others had.

I always thought Who and Star Trek existed in the same universe, would be nice to see a live action cross over with villians from Trek show.

'Star Trek' and 'Doctor Who' cannot fit into the same universe due to disparity between the history of Earth and the origins of life and the universe. Now, when it comes to a multiverse, it is another matter! 'Doctor Who' and the Lovecraft mythos pretty much exist in the same multiverse already.

Really? :horror But trying to fit ST into the same canon as DW would be hard so that novel and the IDW comic do not seem to work well; though they might at least salvage some dignity by making universes cross rather than making Star Trek just an era of history in the DW world. The history of the DW world - and Jean Marc-Loficier collected it all together in the wonderful 'Celestial Index - is vastly different from that of ST. Quatermass and Lovecraft are easier to fit into the same universe as DW and had been in the McCoy era, with 'Remembrance of The Daleks' and 'The Curse of Fenric' (and the Virgin NAs), respectively. And the Fendahleen from Tom Baker's era are really just Chthonians (from the Mythos, written by Brian Lumley), with the only difference being that they are shown to be killed by salt instead of salt water.
