I've seen her in a few things as well as Broadchurch..Bland,dull run of the mill actress at best!

Seems a bit bland tbh to me as well. Doesn't look very 'Doctory' either (just personal opinion). Hard to imagine her carrying off an episode like Heaven Sent.

Seems like she is in it due to connection, not skill. You'd expect Cillian Murphy if Nolan was directing.

Certainly feels that way. Recall the BBC saying earlier in the year that they would cast 'the best person for the job, regardless of gender' but apparently it was always Chibnall's intention to make 13 a women

I think it will be interesting to see where the show goes with a female Doctor. I remember the disappointment some BSG fans had when Starbuck and Boomer were both made into female characters, but the show was a success, most people accepted the change and there was a whole new audience. Perhaps this change may bring in some new viewers?

As for the actress, I can't say I've ever seen her in anything, so I have no idea how she will be. I just remember watching Warehouse 13 and always thought Jaime Murray would make a great female Doctor if they were ever to cast one.

That's all I know her from and. . .I can't disagree with you here :lol But then, that seems to have been the same criteria used to cast the vast majority of the male doctors, so it should all work out fine.

:chase

Seriously though, change is tough, but sometimes good. I hope it works out well and that the fans get behind it.

Nah..they didn't need to change the gender of the doctor..you don't piss all over 50 plus years of an established male character for the sake of political correctness and diversity! It just needed better writing and story telling...not the PC vehicle it's become under Moffat's awful stewardship! Some fans will stay watching but a lot like me will dip in..simply out of curiosity..then soon hit the off switch as the Timelady and Missy do battle...sonic umbrella's and hair curlers at the ready!

BSG was great due to the excellent writing and storytelling...which is what Dr who really needs! And with respect neither Starbuck or Boomer were central characters..they were just part of the mix so it worked..

It's just been revealed that the BBC wanted a female in the role all along...So now the bigger question is...did Capaldi (the greatest Doctor since Tom)leave of his own accord?...or was he pushed?!

If I had to choose someone to be a female Doctor, it would have been Atwell. She can carry some scenes imo.

She can also carry some uh... other... things...

I might have given it a shot with her TBH. But as it stands... nah. "But muh Gender Change". It's a retcon, a recent one at that. I don't like it, in the same way I don't like all the **** Gillen & Bendis did to Stark in the comics. As far as I'm concerned, it's not canon. I'll stop watching, and take the end of Season 9 as "THE" Finale of DW. Just how I'm pretending Stark is lost in space and the one in the current books is a Skrull.

That would be shame The BBC is on a big diversity kick now! People are naïve if they think it had a no impact on the decision to cast a women.

( Also totally agree, Capaldi is the best Doctor since Baker! I will miss him.)

Not surprised one bit by that. Damn BBC.

I sincerely hope that Capaldi was not pushed into leaving (my most favourite Doctor to date) but it does make you wonder considering the love he had for the show and character. He put it down to gruelling schedule I think but who really knows he could have just been told to say that. We will almost certainly never know the truth regarding that :(

Side note...Can't get over how much this whole thing has really really annoyed me...way more than I thought it would even though I knew it was coming!! :lol Glad I am not the only one who feels this way.

I think many people who watched BSG may have never seen the original one.

I really like Jaime Murray, great actress. Still, why not keep the Doctor as HE is (was) and create a new female character? I would watch a spin-off with her as a Timelady.

I feel the same. Part of me was hoping the show could turn into something I'd enjoy again like I used to, instead I got proof that this is a lost cause. It's heartbreaking, and it's not just a tv show, it's a part of british culture.

Some more shows with badass female leads: Buffy, Xena, Queen of Swords, Blood Ties

Tulip on Preacher.

Like I said, I'm sure there are more, I can only mention what I've seen myself. So, no good / strong roles for women on tv / in the sci-fi, fantasy, action genre? Definitely not true, and keep in mind that this was already done in the 90s / early 2000, in fact almost seems like they created better roles / stories for women back then, whilst now they're often being (mis)used as political tools.

Also, they didn't turn Hercules into Xena or Zorro into Tessa, the created separate characters and gave them another name.

Yes!! If she had gotten the role, I certainly would have been more open about the gender swap; but as of now, I'll also end it with S9. Haven't really given 10 a go, and from what I hear, it is pretty neutral.

In the BSG pilot and first half of season one, Starbuck was annoyingly bad, She was written like a bad Dirk Benedict parody. As the first season progressed, they tweaked and tone down her character. . She ended up being very good.
As for strong and badass females on TV add Arya Stark, Daenery Stromborn, Cersei Lannister, and ......

Lyanna Mormont!
