Funny how no one ever says that when all the candidates are white.

Do you count yourself in that "no one"? :lol

Seriously, the guy is a good actor, so he would deserve it as much as anyone I imagine. I'm just a tad worried about possible story arcs if they purposely looked for a black actor rather than just the best actor they could get. I'd say the same thing about any race, religion, sexuality, whatever, if it seemed that they were expressly limiting themselves.

I suppose you're right about the fact I wouldn't question it if it was a white guy, but if it was a white guy in a wheelchair or a white blind guy... :lol:lol

Anybody see the Nu style end credit people post on Youtube for the classic series? Some of them are actually pretty well done and make you wanna watch the classics again. :lol

I'm glad that I don't have to rewatch the last 2 minutes of the previous 1/2 hour like you do for the old one.

It just seems too much of a coincidence that a black actor has never been mentioned as a serious candidate until the USA elected it's first black President.

What makes you think this is the first time a black actor has been seriously considered for the role? You weren't privy to the last two rounds of casting and let's face it - none of us know who's actually been seriously considered and who are just fan rumors. We have a new person casting the role and it's feasible (not to mention likely) that it just never occurred to him to limit the role to people with white skin. No need to concoct elaborate conspiracy theories - especially when they hinge on a country where Doctor Who has zero cultural impact.

Yes, but then again it also never occurred to me there was anything odd about considering black actors for the role. I firmly believe the Doctor could be any race or gender.

Here's the thing - we've also been told Marc Warren and Sean Pertwee were serious contenders, along with a host of other white finalists. So either the rumor mill is the farce I've been claiming all along, or the production team was never "purposely looking for a black actor" and as such there's no agenda at play.

Not bad though I think the "It's the end....but the moment has been prepared for " clip made it a bit too obvious what will happen.

I am seriously excited about this rumor in a way none of the others were able to. CE just has everything I am looking for in a Doctor: intensity, levity, passion, and eccentricity. He can pull them all off in spades--- which is something I was never convinced PJ could pull off... One thing is for sure: I am really excited if this rumor is true and really REALLY excited if the reported spin at the end of The Next Doctor features EC in some way....

I absolutely agree.

It just seems too much of a coincidence that a black actor has never been mentioned as a serious candidate until the USA elected it's first black President.

so does this mean the fact that the TV show '24' had a black president 6 years ago, that the american public is now trying to push an agenda on us by copying 24 and voting in a black president for the first time?

Just because America now has a black president, doesn't now mean than anybody black in television is only there because an 'overly PC agenda' is being pushed on us.

If true this will go some way to cementing my opinion of Steven Moffatt as anyone with the same penchant for pushing overly PC agendas on audiences as RTD and an even bigger ego cannot be good for the show.
Being PC is all well & good to a certain degree but I think people are WAY too sensitive on such issues and modern TV has become far too sterile as a result.

so any black person cast in a show now is only because we're all being too PC?

Yeah but regeneration episodes are almost never surprises anyway.

I don't think they've ever been a surprise. The new Doctor is always announced to the media literally months in advance. Regeneration episodes are an exercise in dramatic irony.

I honest to GOD wish that there WERENT such a media frenzy over the casting, and that the Beeb had the damn good sense to play things close to the vest and let television be a surprise. Nothing in this world is a surprise anymore. It's like the aborted Regeneration in Series 4. It was fantastic because NO ONE knew. Now imagine if they had a real regeneration where no one knew, it would be brilliant!

Prog, go watch Children of Men. EC is awesome in that movie.

Thank you. I was quite smashing wasn't I. :D

I've thought about this rumour some today and have decided I'm not too excited by it. I love Chiwetel Ejiofor, he's great in everything and would play the part well, but casting a black actor, Asian actor, a child, an American actor or a woman all seems like stunt casting, a gimmick for ratings, a lame attempt to "spice up" the show and an excuse to have lots of goofball jokes and such. What reason would they come up with that the Doctor would become a different ethnicity? There should be some continuity to the character and the notion that anyone could be the doctor doesn't sit well with me. Would you want to see Dakota Fanning play the Doctor?

If only there was some sort of fictional concept that could cover this. We could call it "regeneration" perhaps...

We could list terrible white male actors all day. So why not put the straw man away and accept that people want good performers in the role as a matter of course?
