Even if its a nonrevelation, he still can be used as a plot device and new character to keep things a little varied.

I think the lack of a quantity of episodes may be a reason to try to appeal to hardcore fans by tabbing old characters.

Anyway, I love speculating about these things, baseball trades, all that.

I suppose my reaction is driven from having just finished The Writer's Tale. This sort of thing is so far removed from how RTD views the series and its audience. He also clearly has a master plan re: the Time War and casually introducing another rogue Time Lord is difficult to square with that. Now of course I could be wrong, but I don't think he intends to casually overturn his own continuity re: the Doctor detecting other Time Lords and such for the sake of a Christmas cracker.

I think the lack of a quantity of episodes may be a reason to try to appeal to hardcore fans by tabbing old characters.

Again in The Writer's Tale RTD makes it pretty clear the "fans" are such a negligible minority that he doesn't consider them at all when writing scripts.

But I guess we'll see soon.

We've all seen the multiple Doctor stories that have previously been done. All of them involved previous incarnations of the Doctor. Seems like this time RTD may have reversed that ? Perhaps the Doctors next incarnation is not set in stone or pre-ordained in any way and that being so, is 'random' in nature.
If that were so then the doctor meeting a future version of himself and the interaction they have, could potentially upset this process and change who he may or could be next.
Allowing this 'one off' story for DM. (you could also use it to explain other Who stories that vary from the accepted chronology,(Shalka), in fact you could have as many actors/variations of the Doctor as you wanted as long as you had 'two' or more of them meet at any one time). In fact if this crossing of timelines cancelling out the future self was possible that could make DT's Doctor the 6th or 5th Doctor depending on how it worked or how you look at it.
But then that would screw up continuity completely, and how in god's name would the Doctor have memory of previous events if they hadn't happened, unless Timelords can retain them someway?
But that SF and time travel for you!

I think trying to bring all the different continuities within the Whoniverse together is too confusing and I find it much easier to group things into "stuff I like" and "stuff I don't like".

The Next Doctor clues from Digital Spy:

1. The mysterious Cybershades can jump quite high.

2. Neither the Doctor nor the Other Doctor recognise each other. But the latter doesn't remember much anyway.

3. There are two words that the Doctor never refuses.

4. The Other Doctor has a TARDIS - and it's magnificent.

5. For a while Rosita becomes the Doctor's companion (but then you'll know that already if you've read our interview with the lovely Velile Tshabalala).

6. The script includes the customary line "what about the children?"

7. At least one previous incarnation of the Doctor makes an appearance.

8. Miss Hartigan (Dervla Kirwan) is a very special lady.

9. The Other Doctor's fobwatch is a very important clue.

10. "I suppose ** *** ***, **** ***** ** *****."

Also this quote from RTD in an interview on BBC radio this morning:

"The question is... how can this Doctor [Tennant] be meeting the next Doctor... and it's not just the next Doctor you get to see - you get to see some old ones as well... it's a Doctor-fest, in a way."

and this from a SFX review of the Xmas special:

The odd thing is, for much of its running time, it feels surprisingly small scale, both in terms of its plot ambitions and its imagery. Indeed, it barely feels like a Russell T Davies story for a long while, as there are few of those quirky moments that divide fans (but which the general audience laps up). While it's very funny in places, and has some patented RTD character moments, this Victorian based story is more "Evil of the Daleks" than "Voyage of the Damned" - it's very trad Who. And leaves you wondering where the budget went...

And then it becomes obvious in the last 10 minutes when it goes very big and very bat's arse. It's pure RTD and jawdropping. Jawdroppingly brilliant or jawdroppingly stupid really depends on how much you like New Who. Gotta admit, I loved it unreservedly, but then I unreservedly loved the TARDIS towing the Earth.

Can't wait. :blissy

for bcm77 it may mean this: :blissysmi

:lol

Someone posted this and I totally fell for it. :lol (its a joke)

To be honest I couldn't give a crap about the 2008 Christmas Special, the specials next year or indeed the 5th full series in 2010.
I've tried and tried and tried but aside from a few episodes in the first 2 series I cannot find anything to like about the rest of Nu-Who and I've decided enough is enough.
I sincerely hope everyone else likes the Christmas Special and whatever follows.

^^^ Bah, humnug!

Though I actually agree wholeheartedly. Gave up on this rubbish after the second season. But to each their own...

I dunno, after the fact that people were CERTAIN it was Patterson Joseph, I'm gonna wait untill Auntie Beeb makes a press release because then its final. No offense Marc!

That would be brilliant if true. Where are you getting the rumor? There's nothing on any of the news sites or the BBC.

It will be officially announced after The Next Doctor airs on Christmas Day. Take that as you will. Nothing is of course official until the beeb announces it. :D

I know I know. I really hope this is true though. I thought he was great in Children of Men and he has the right balance of charisma, smarts, and ability to make it really work. With Patterson Joseph I wasn't so sure.

Anyway 2 days to the Next Doctor. I just boughta VGA cable so I can connect my laptop to my HDTV and watch it on there after I've... ahem... acquired it. ;)
