Does altruism exist or is it just a word?

Not sure how to take your post? You just stating that fact or are you saying that it's not altruism because they are doing it so they will be remembered as heroes? If the latter then I say bull. I'm sure the last thought that's going through their mind is not "I'm going to be a hero" but more "I have to save my friends".

He's saying they ARE to be remembered as heroes! Quit being so simple and taking peoples' post out of context so you feel you have some free right to attack them.

To be remembered as heros.

Actually, I also got the feeling that ChunkyZergling was trying to say that even when giving their life it is not altruism because they have the assumed 'reward' of being remembered as heros.

They do it in order "to be remembered as heros".

Why do I think Chunky is just trying to start something? What is the purpose of this thread?

That's a much better way of addressing the question without jumping the guy's crap like someone did earlier.

I honestly got from his message that they are to be remembered as heroes. I always felt anyone who couldn't act like that in combat shouldn't sign up for combat arms in the military.

I always felt like the guys I was in the Army with weren't in to be heroes. They were mostly in for the honor of service, or that they were flat-out nuts. Mostly that they were just nuts though.

Sorry, but I took it the same way, and it reads like that.

So, he says, you know, if a gernade comes sailing in here, I'm going to throw myself on it and have my guts blowed out just so someone can remember my dead ass as a hero.

Ummmm...NO.

he said "to be remembered as heroes" not "so they can be remembered as heroes".

Yeah, his post could be taken either way because of the wording, but at least let the guy have an opportunity to clarify it before jumping his ____ like that.

Why are you jumping hoodonit's ____ like that?

He was giving oportunity for clarification. There is no accusation in his post:

Fine, we'll play this "____" then.

Now where exactly in this post does he give the guy an opportunity to clarify? All I see is where he wants to assume the "latter" and comment extensively about it, rather than ask the guy to clarify his post.

But hey, let's all just ASSume what he meant and make him out to be some ____, without giving that opportunity for clarification. :clap

Selflessness is retarded, and altruism exists.

Like when the U.S. helped the Soviet Union not starve in the 1930's. Very altruistic and very retarded. Then there's England appeasing Germany. Very altruistic, even more retarded. U.S. helping the Middle East? You guessed it...

Altruism is action done out of a lack of concern for humanity and human values. It is the source of all human evil. I wish it didn't exist, but it does. Like cancer.

Pfft. My answer was way better.

I likened altruism to gas.

Gas > Cancer.

Kings wins :yess:

So let's all look out for #1, and screw everyone else? Yep, that doesn't sound "retarded" in the least bit. That attitude is more of a cancer than any selfless act ever could be.

I guess you did everything in your life on your own, and no ******* helped you, huh?

I hope I didn't disappoint. I'm kinda hungover.

:lol I was thinking of presenting your argument for you, so I'm just glad you finally showed. It's an intriguing way of looking at it.

I'm sure you'll have opportunity to elaborate when everyone starts disagreeing with you. :D

[Edit] looks like it's started already...

Instigator post :lecture

Don't bite D.

I agreed with the gas! :lol

I do believe in SOME instances, like a mother putting herself before her child, but like Devil said with helping those who basically hate us is :cuckoo:
