Jyn gets no love here, all of her fans are in the figure threads, lol. I know some folks didn't care for her but she seemed to have a real kindness to her that would only come out when in the presence of those she truly trusted. Like when she studied the depressed faces of the commandos inside the stolen ship and gave them a pep talk not just to inspire them to fight but also to give them peace of mind for their last battle. Or stopping to give her weapon to K-2 not just because he might need it but specifically because she knew that it's what he wanted. Taking Cassian's hand on the beach to let him know that someone finally genuinely cared for him.

I found that all to be very endearing. And the way Felicity played her when she confronted Cassian about her father's death. Venting her anger toward him while clearing yearning for validation over her heartbreak. Validation that at the time Cassian refused to give her. *shrugs* All of that made it very easy for me to root for her.

I agree, she was played Very Well. The scene with her confronting Saw about being left behind is great aswell.

Prime since I know you want the new trilogy to acknowledge the prequels what's the #1 PT element that you'd like to see brought into the ST narrative? Luke communing with Hayden himself? Or something else?

Darth Plagueis is the one element that could tie it all together. It was left unexplained in the PT so it's a, er, "prime" opportunity to tie up the loose end.

I realize it may detract from Palpatine's badness, but if they wanna raise the stakes for the ST it's a good way to do it.

Are you specifically wanting Snoke to be Plagueis or would you prefer he be a separate character? If Snoke is Plagueis are you figuring that his head wound be on account of Palpatine trying to murder him in his sleep as told to Anakin in ROTS?

Yeah, Snoke as Plagueis would make the most sense. And I hadn't actually considered the head wound, but that's a good point.

You've been wasting way too much mental energy on something PT-related! :lol

Quite possibly. I wasn't sure if Abrams' playing dumb was another Khan-esque red herring or if he really was leaving it up to Johnson et al to fill in the back story.

I used to think that Abrams had a fully fleshed out backstory for the events and characters of TFA that was simply glossed over in favor of focusing on an entertaining two hour ride but I don't think that anymore. He had a backstory for why Han and Leia were where they were and I believe that's it.

I don't think he knows who Rey's parents are, who Snoke is, why Kylo turned or how the FO rose from the ashes of the Empire. That might even be why he turned down directing TLJ. He simply didn't know how to make sense of what he had established. The awkward vagueness of a lot of TFA plus comments from Johnson about having to come up with a sensible reason that Luke was a recluse and Adam Driver's comments about appreciating the fact that TLJ finally gave him some understanding of *his own character* only confirm this in my mind.

Yes characters and back stories of the OT weren't fleshed out in ANH but at least Lucas had the excuse of not knowing whether there'd actually be sequels or not.

I still love TFA but it's organic link to the OT is lacking to say the least.

Doesnt the trailer does that

Buying the soundtrack with the picture book inside spoiled all kinds of things in 1980.

Certainly seeing Anakin in TPM completely spoils Darth Vader in the remainder of the Saga.

Jango spoils Boba.

TPM Jabba spoils ROTJ Jabba.

TPM 3PO spoils 3PO.

TPM R2 spoils OT R2.

AOTC Death Star schematics spoil the Death Star.

Shall I keep going...?

It also ruins the surprise of first seeing the AT-AT in Empire.

Yes and no. If you really want the AT-AT's in ESB to be a "surprise" then there's a simple remedy; watch the OT first and then RO as we all did. However even binging RO and then the OT provides a nice escalation. The AT-ACT's in RO are taken down by fighters pretty easily and someone watching ESB for the first time after RO might be inclined to assume that the same would occur. Expecting the Hoth AT-AT's to fall and then realizing that the snowspeeders' guns have absolutely no effect on them is actually kind of a nice retroactive "oh ****" moment.

There are a couple ways that RO/SW/ESB/ROTJ makes for a very nice viewing order. One is that Tarkin feels more evil in SW and the Rebels more desperate after watching RO. Also the RO Vader sequences provide a very nice bookend to his appearance in ROTJ in that both his first and last appearance feature him without his full armor and more specifically his trademark helmet/mask. So it's kind of nice how ROTJ brings him back to the pale and scarred guy we first see in that Mustafar bacta tank.

However...I think that anyone watching the films for the first time absolutely should watch the OT first (theatrical editions of course) and then RO. It's just the way it will always be meant to be IMO. Then each viewer would experience the characters in the order and way that they were all initially presented and as an added bogus the Saga won't end with the mediocre ROTJ but with the awesome RO. Watching Vader fiercely looking out into space fully masked is a MUCH better send-off to the character than either his last moment with Luke on the DS II or his ghost at the ewok village.

So watch the OT, then RO, then the OT all over again with the new perspective given by RO. If someone were to do RO and *then* the OT they'd forever be denied the opportunity to see how the OT speaks only for itself.

TPM R2 spoils OT R2.

That little swiss army trash can is the only constant in all the different Star Wars movies. The little dude never changes. He's always saving people's asses in the nick of time whether it's Phantom Menace or Empire Strikes Back.

I'd actually argue that his first appearance in the Phantom Menace being the last droid standing while fixing the ship or whatever was a better entrance to his character than Princess Leia sticking a floppy disc in him before he veers off course and rolls into a wall off camera.

Rocket-powered R2 in AOTC spoils non-rocket-powered Artoo in the OT!

With the PT Lucas had the unenviable task of outdoing the OT with movies that were meant to be viewed before it.

I don't think he knows who Rey's parents are

Funny, cos Ridley thought it was "obvious". Dunno if that means Luke, or if she was just making assumptions.

That might even be why he turned down directing TLJ.

No, that was because he hadn't had a break in years. He had to be persuaded to do TFA because of it. But when he read the TLJ script he said he wished he was directing. Guess he gets his wish now for Ep IX.
