If it's like watching paint dry, I can't see how Nintendo had a good showing

I'm not saying it was great or even good, and it was a bit boring, but the fact is that Nintendo is still thinking about the core gamers. CORE gamers love Mario and Metroid and Zelda. We got all 3 at this year's E3. The casual market is going to eat up Wii Sports Resort and for all of its blandness the Vitality Sensor finger hugger thingy might sell well with casuals.

The only thing I wish Nintendo had shown more of is third party support. Some of you might think the Wii is a barren wasteland for third party games, but that's not true (well, sorta true, but not as extreme as some think). There are a good selection of stuff from Capcom, Konami, Ubisoft, and EA coming down the pipeline for 09 and 2010.

I'm not picking sides in the fanboy wars, but I will say this:

Mario Galaxy 2 >>>>> Any other game shown this year

Um....I wish it weren't just a sequel.

If you consider good games as Nintendo is thinking about us core gamers you might be insane. 2 games out of there entire yearly roundup appeal to me...2.

Nintendo needs to just make software, as their E3 showing was poor and there wiimote controls and casual games leave much to desired. Since Nintendo does have the pool of money that Sony and M$ have to dip into, the Big N going software only or handheld only is a matter of if, but when...

I don't get it  Did you not play the first Mario Galaxy? If not, you should. If you did and don't like it, then it wasn't for you, but it was GOY material for most everybody else.

There wasn't one game shown that got me more excited than the next platformer made by the best platform developer in the industry. Does that make me a laughingtock or just some guy who like platformers?

You kids and your silly "My video games can beat up your video games."

It doesn't have guns, swearing or 256 player deathmatch, therefore it isn't "cool"

Nintendo has sold over 50 million Wii systems to date, that is over 20 million more than the Xbox 360 in ONE less year on the market. As a hardware manufacturer they aren't going anywhere.

Nintendo revealed 3 first party games during E3. Metroid, Mario Galaxy 2, and New Super Mario Bros. for Wii. Nintendo's problem is that they didn't show any of the many third party titles coming out for the system. No mention of Silent Hill Shattered Memories, no mention of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom or Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles, no mention of No More Heroes 2, I can go on and on.

Now, if you look at Sony's conference or Microsoft's, they paraded their third party games like crazy, because they were smart. Nintendo failed to do that.
Their press conference this year, not good but not bad, especially if you've been familiar with E3 since it first started.

That's because Nintendo doesn't have many third party games...good games that the system supports.

I was one of those 50 million that bought one and I'm also one of those 45 million that lets his system collect dust, as are most of my friends as well. We bought into the hype and were let down as there focus is no longer on the core group of gamers.

We had two per household before I moved out my mother and sister bought one with wiifit...they hardly use it. I guess what I'm getting are these points:

Sure it's sold the most console but how many of those user actually play the console on a regular basis? I haven't turned my on for at least 6 months.

And Nintendo may be gaining fans that are tween girls, and children, and little kids, and grandparents, and 50 something year old women with brain age and games of passion. Nintendo may be doing well with sales and numbers but in terms of the core gamer they are focusing less and less on us. Pretty soon Nintendos not even going to really make video games for the masses. It's going to be Microsoft and Sony, and maybe even apple next gen? Nintendo is in a different league, one that doesn't really appeal to me.

And I wish they would because I love my older Nintendo systems.

I mean I watched all 3 press conferences. With Nintendo I saw 2 games that I want. SONY I want about 20. How long can Nintendo go on before they are mocked as the child system. The uncool kiddie system that use to reign supreme.

It's sad, I grew up with their systems. I was one of those hardcore gamers that helped make Nintendo what they are today. It just seems Nintendo's saying this: "Thanks to everyone who made us successful, since the Gamecube didn't do to well, since we made games that didn't appeal to the hardcore masses, and it sold poorly...we are not shifting to focus to non-gamers. And we are going to hook you in with this gimmick, and the promises of our successful popular franchises ever 4 years.

It's a trick. They pulled the blinders on us. We bought it, and now I'm stuck with a game system that appeals more to tween girls than us 20 something male gamers. It's sad and makes me very angry.

......AND BREATHE.....

Nintendo did better than last year, but Microsoft and Sony did reallly well here.

Sony would have done better if most of its big games weren't already known about, there were only like 3 new games for PS3 that they showed. And then of course the PSP Go was already leaked.

Microsoft did really well with its new announcements, my only issue is that the biggest thing they had was the Natal thing and it's so early in development we won't be seeing anything concrete from it for a while. It might release next year.

Ok I am going to try to explain this and not argue for once. So please don't take it this way. Nintendo IS appealing to the masses. Gamers still are not the masses. They are going after our parents, grandparents, and children. Me being in marketing, I know that this is a cash cow for them. It is not ruining them either. Financially it is making them even stronger and by the looks of it don't expect it to change. It doesn't matter that we the true gamers say we won't buy it anymore. They could care less about the hardcore gamer. This is their strategy and while we here can agree that most of the games aren't made for us, it really doesn't matter to them. They are making money off of everyone else. I sold my Wii. Aside from Mario, not even Zelda captured me like the old ones did. Man I did love Mario though. So they are going after a niche market. It just so happens it isn't most of us anymore. I still applaud their original ideas. I actually think its kinda cool that they are now the gateway into gaming. Who knows, maybe some of those people will start buying 360's or PS3's? Kinda like Nintendo now being the gateway drug if you will into gaming. :dunno

And this to me doesn't sit well. And I think it's sad. Funny thing is that Nintendo couldn't compete with the other two last gen, so they switched focus. But in terms of the core gaming audience they still can't compete.

I agree! However, they figured out a way to reach a much larger audience than us. Sucks for us! :monkey2 If I am trying to sell a product though for profit I know that I am going to try to sell it to as many people as possible. I guess Nintendo feels the same way.

But we can both agree on this. The glory days of Nintendo being the best to the hardcore have been over since Super Nintendo. Even then they started slip and people said Genesis was better.

However, Super Nintendo always had better graphics. ;) :lol

The Super Nintendo was so much better than the Genesis. :peace

Haha! The age old debate! Don't want to start that all over again. :rotfl

I think Nintendo started to lose it with the 64 and then really fell off the wagon with the Cube. They said ^^^^ the hardcore and admitted that their system graphically would not be on par with the rest. That takes balls.

Frankly, I could live with all 2D games again.

Too true, I still have my SNES in the bedroom...I was always a Nintendo guy until the PSX came out, and I've been a SONY guy ever since. But it makes sense as SNES was the last great Nintendo system. 64 had some awesome titles, as did the Gamecube. But Nintendo will never be what it once was. Sort of like the American car companies today, the glory days are over.
