Good, this "outbreak" is finally getting the proper attention it deserves. :D I think I'm going to dress as an ebola freakout victim on Friday now. :rotfl

this is a tricky circumstances.

on one hand, as a society, do we kick our own citizen/people out when they're weak/sick? follow the time tested mob mentality/psychology of witch hunting, Japanese concentration camp, etc? the needs of many out weight the needs of a few? that sound heroic in star trek but begs the question of morality or at least the cohesion of our society. this is one of many circumstances that will test us.

No, and that's exactly why I would never advocate the security of the many over the one. I do not believe it's moral and I do not believe it coheres society. If the many can override the rights of the one whenever they feel threatened, then people would be no more civilized than rats.

At the same time, no one with the knowledge that they may be carrying a brutally lethal disease has the right to be exposing other people to it. That would be tantamount to consciously exposing oneself to HIV and then sleeping around unprotected (which is in essence, murder) and one can be prosecuted for that.

The question ends up being one of prevention, and that hinges on the objectivity of methods used to determine the severity of the threat. Time spent in a country experiencing a communicable epidemic would be sufficient to flag anyone crossing a border. Generally I do not regard the purpose of government to be the prevention of threats. However, they have assumed the power and should therefore be expected to get it right. Ideally, people would be smart enough to handle it on their own (sadly, too many have relied too long on Providence doing their thinking for them).

on the other hand, its so logical to wall ourselves off. extreme circumstances requires extreme measures?
"Good fences make good neighbors." - Robert Frost.

It's not extreme so much as it is what the situation calls for, but yeah; Frost had it right.

I just wonder if we're being proactively scared. this isn't a scientific poll but I am sure it reflect most people. but if we're not so scared why block off?

Fear is an emotion. Rational action requires knowledge. Knowledge of this disease strongly suggests that you don't want it around, no matter how difficult it is to catch. A sneeze in Manhattan is not what it is in Maine, but if someone sneezes on you in a potato field, is it any different than if they do it on a crowded sidewalk?

I think home quarantine is fine. they should have someone guarding the home. the govt can afford it and its fair to the public safety and the person quarantine. this is still possible as it is still early in this country.

It's also putting the horse behind the cart.

be prepared. maybe buy some face mask, latex gloves, stuff that kill bacteria/virus for hand/body and living area. unless u want to spend time protesting the govt.

Protest is as valuable as hindsight, and more akin to emotional hysterics than any kind of rational, useful action. Ebola is not easily transmitted. Just pay attention to your surroundings and hope that anyone with a higher risk factor than yourself has sense of responsibility enough to not share the love.

yea it gonna cost. soldier over there now is costing us now. they're doing what they can; its not like we have ebola-type caliper every year to deal with. yea, they're far from perfect on how to handle the situation.

The issue I take with them is that they have deemed it their responsibility to prevent the same problem happening here. They've usurped the means as well as the end and they are doing a rotten job of it. "Ebola will not happen here," said the horse. Was the horse lying or just stupid, and does it make a difference when the result is the same?

Always a pleasure Mr. Green. :duff

there were more cases of herpes and the clap than ebola in the USA last time i cheeked. lolz

I've haven't been following the news on this lately, because there's been way too much fear-mongering, and sentimentalization for my liking. It's very concerning that a few people here were infected. But, America has much greater concerns than Ebola.

We actually do need to worry about this in places with borders sloppier than our own. And that's why good Americans with the proper knowledge go of their own volition and try to do something.
This whole bother that it's inside our country and we should freakout and close the borders is for ****ing idiots that like to watch 24-hour news, 16 hours a day.

Liberian Rhapsody

Is this a real plague?
Is this my bleeding spleen?
Caught in a few nights
No escape from my quarantine
Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go
A fever high, heart rate low
Watch the way the wind blows, public safety matters to me, to me

Obama, just killed a man
Sank my teeth into his head
Spread my virus, now he's dead
Obama, life had just begun
But now I've gone and thrown it all away
Obama, ooo
Didn't mean to make you cry
If I'm not still alive this time tomorrow
Carry on, carry on, because public safety matters

Too late, my time has come
Sends shivers down my spine
Body's aching all the time
Goodbye everybody - I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
Obama, ooo - (watch the way the wind blows)
I don't want to die
I sometimes wish I'd never gone cannibal

I see a little news segment on a man
What a douche, what a douche will he start a pandemic?
Politics, infighting - very very frightening me
Commentary, Commentary,
Commentary, Commentary,
Commentary Interview - West Africa

But I'm just a poor man and nobody loves me
He's just a poor man from a poor colony
Spare him his life from infectious disease
Easy come easy go - will you let me go
Ebolah! No! - we will not let you go - let him go!
Ebolah! We will not let you go - let him go!
Ebolah! We will not let you go - let me go!
Will not let you go - let me go (never)
Never let you go - let me go
Never let me go - ooo
No, no, no, no, no, no, no -
Obama mia, 'bama mia, 'bama mia let me go
The CDC has a vaccine set aside for me!
for me!!
for me!!!!!

So you think you can keep me and halt all my flights!
So you think this doesn't infringe on my rights!
Oh baby - can't do this to me baby
Just gotta get out - just gotta get right outta here

Ooh yeah, ooh yeah
Public safety matters
Anyone can see
Public safety matters - public safety matters to me

Watch the way the wind blows...

Remember when we were in Africa?

Poor Otis, dead and gone
Left me here to sing his song
Pretty little girl with a red dress on
Poor Otis, dead and gone...

We actually do need to worry about this in places with borders sloppier than our own. And that's why good Americans with the proper knowledge go of their own volition and try to do something.

And then bring it back. Thanks *******s. :wave
