And while some could argue that the QMX offerings were not perfect (lack of custom bodies by individual figure is probably the best example) they were still awesome to collect because the head sculpts were almost all very strong.
You kinda lost me there. The Kirk and Khan sculpts were certainly amazing, but the rest looked like caricatures or had those weird lumpy faces.

I've had my issues with some of the Exo sculpts so far, but the majority have been quite strong I think, with a greater percentage of hits than we got with QMX. And as long as I can see the likeness I'm not too bothered by them looking a bit soft at times or not being as highly detailed as a HT sculpt.

*Sigh*

I assume this will be an unpopular post, so I want to start off with some context.

I have always loved Star Trek. From the run-runs of TOS when I was a kid, all the way through TNG, all the movies, to Discovery and SNW.

One of the most powerful ways I connect with these shows is to own a piece of them through collecting. I was beyond excited when Nanjin headed up the production team at QMX and began producing high quality sixthscale for my beloved Trek.

And while some could argue that the QMX offerings were not perfect (lack of custom bodies by individual figure is probably the best example) they were still awesome to collect because the head sculpts were almost all very strong.

Enter EXO-6

Great customized bodies, next level attention to detail in the accessories, the best wardrobe tailoring I think I’ve ever seen in sixthscale. Incredible.

But the head sculpts

I’m sorry, but they are just not good enough.

All those other amazing items are very important in creating a top tier 1/6 figure. But (for me anyway, and I can’t believe I’m alone in this) the single most important element that MUST be there for a worthy top shelf release is a jaw dropping sculpt, and EXO is just not there.

I really like their Data release, but not really interested in collecting First Contact. I loved the movie, and I assume there might still be a non-compete something or other that won’t allow EXO to repeat QMX releases (or maybe just good business sense not to launch a new company by offering figures a high percentage of the target audience already owns) but either way, I knew I didn’t want to invest in a FC line up right away and with my TOS and TNG collection woefully incomplete.

But other than Data, (and with a few other possible exceptions) I have found the sculpts soft and unconvincing.

The best example here is Janeway. She is definitely recognizable, but her features look melted to me, and the hair looks like something a baker would create using frosting as the media to make a Voyager tribute cake for a fan’ 9th birthday party.

Anyway, some are definitely better than others, but as a line, I’ve found myself often hovering my finger over the Add to Cart button at both Sideshow and EXO direct, but just can’t make myself pull the trigger because all in all, the EXO figures are just not there……yet.

I still remain hopeful that later lines and later releases get me there. The STTMP figures look pretty damn good, and the TWOK could be a game changer, and I wish Nanjin and the company only massive success.

So for me, EXO is an optimistic work in progress. Not ready for me yet, but hopefully soon!
Fair argument. I agree in that not every release has been a home run (not even doable with Hot Toys) but I think the weaker releases have been limited to VOY, IMO.

I’d encourage you to look at some of the recent prototype reveals if you haven’t already, they won’t disappoint (e.g. Kruge, Quark, TWOK, TMP Kirk, TMP Spock, etc).

For current releases, judging by pictures alone. I’d rank them like this:

Best: Mirror Sulu, Q (Sulu actually could stand alone because his likeness is really striking)
Excellent: FC Picard, FC Data
Very Good: Mirror Spock, Sisko
Good: Tuvok, Seven (these two may actually move up a tier in hand)
OK: Janeway, Doctor

Does that mean you’ve never had an EXO-6 figure in hand?

Thank you, yes!

I was very purposeful in saying that the newer prototypes look EXTREMELY promising, and I’m excited to see the production pieces arrive!

I mostly agree with your Best to Ok list as well. I am not as big a fan of the FC Picard as you are though. May just be the single scene FC specific expression they went with, but for my money QMX Picard has it hands down.

But there’s more here to be excited about than to bemoan.

With that said, I feel like we owe it to the hobby and to EXO itself to be empowered enough to call balls and strikes. There was just about an equal measure of praise and critique in my original post, so I hope that is not completely lost.

Onward.

Damn. T'pol looking good. Which uniform would you prefer her in when Exo-6 tackles her? The orange maybe for me to stand out from the rest of the crew. But the blue looks great. Would love the mirror universe of her too.

Just a quick one to show how close these figures actually are in hand.

I’m with you, tough call between the orange or blue, both look brilliant on her. I’d be happy with either, though I think the blue offers another aesthetic dimension with the gold-like belt and trim along the neck line. The mirror look is a must too! 🤞

The blue would be my pick as well, it looks the most like an actual uniform.

I agree with most of this. I will say though I have Janeway and I love her. Is she as sharply sculpted and painted as HT? No. Not even really close. When everyone was raving about her paint apps when she first came out I held her up to my HT Wasp and the difference is pretty stark. She will never pass as a real person the way the best HT sculpts can. Still, there is something about her I just love. I think part of it is EXO-6's inclusion of key accessories to help pose her. She is, standing on the shelf undeniably Janeway. I going to end up getting more of the Voyager crew then I ever expected due to how much I like her. I had planned on just getting the TOS and the Captains but I have a creeping feeling I'll end up with a ton more. Right now Q is on the way, one of my favorite Trek characters ( despite Picard s2 ) and the promo shots make him look fantastic. I am hoping EX0-6 continues to improve. I suspect they will.

Janeway is, from what I've seen, the "softest" sculpt. I think it's a good sculpt, and though I prefer rooted hair, I understand why they'd go with sculpted. That said, these figures are coming at a fraction of the cost of Hot Toys, or really any other companies as well (Blitzway, Star Ace, and especially InArt). In fact, the only company I know with comparable pricing for a major license is Threezero, which also started off with sculpts not as strong as what they put out now. Boy, the bitching I saw about their first Tyrion, woof. And I still have it and love it, BTW.

Janeway is the first female figure from Exo6. Female figures are traditionally much more of a pain in the ass, both in the body and in the face / hair. The fact that it's even in the same ballpark as a figure from a major, deacade+ old company like Hot Toys is pretty freakin' great.

Already, based on the prototype and promo photos, it looks like Burnham is a big, big step up. If you think Nanjin is unaware of any areas for improvement, you'd be mistaken. I think, if we do get another Janeway, it'll be a massive improvement over even the one we have now.

I would vote for the blue, but I would buy either one of them. And the Mirror Universe look is a must!!

Aww, you didn't include the season 1 gray catsuit! Ok, I guess I'll go with orange, lol
I think most fans recognized that the catsuits (On both T'Pol and Seven) were pretty sexist, and not in the fun, TOS-era way. Bil Theis's designs were gorgeous and eye-catching as well as titillating. Those catsuits, though, reminded me of something a seventh grader would think is sexy. Oh, you say it was Brannon Braga's idea? Okay, gotcha ;)

Archer will have his season 3 hair so to match with him it would have been a season 3 catsuit as well.
Yep, at one point he was teased with the first hairstyle. I do prefer T’Pol in the later seasons so I’m completely fine with a mid-series Archer (though in this picture he looks fantastic!)

Janeway was 189.99 the Wasp 251.99. Wasp had 2 heads, a lightup feature and pretty complicated wings. I'd say that's pretty compatible and certainly not a "fraction" of the price unless that fraction is 9/10th. That being said Exo-6 is very reasonably priced and has managed to keep costs pretty even as HT seem to be increasing. I am really not impressed with the Burnham sculpt. The Q and Sisko sculpts do look like quite an improvement though. For the record as I've already stated I REALLY like the Janeway figure. Even if the sculpt is soft they're nothing glaringly off and it screams Janeway to me. The thing about Ex0-6 that amazes me the most ( outside of Nanjin's dedication ) is they're turn around time. It's nothing short of amazing. Every 1/6 company could learn from them.
