Well if you keep taking shots at us, what the hell do you expect? :dunno

Cant trust any revolution led by men in wigs and tights and thats not being mean to anyone with a reasonably high IQ thats just telling it the way it is.

What a stupid thing to say.

The revolution wasn't just about Napoleon at the helm. The subsequent revolutions that delivered the modern republic of France wouldn't have happened but for the first. It changed the French psyche irrevocably because it placed egalitarian principles ahead of aristocratic ideals.

And now they're socialist.

Yet it's purely voluntary contribution to the cause of freedom in two world wars was perhaps the greatest of any democracy. Almost 10% of Canada 's entire population of seven million people served in the armed forces during the First World War, and nearly 60,000 died. The great Allied victories of 1918 were spearheaded by Canadian troops, perhaps the most capable soldiers in the entire British order of battle.

You know what, you could replace 'Canadian' for 'Australian' and that's exactly - almost word for word - how our school history books read:

Voluntary force... 10% of the population (though 5 million not 7 million)... 60 000 dead... spearheaded Allied victories...and of course the ANZACS were worth at least two of anyone else :lol

And now they're socialist.

Yes, but that's your judgment call on whether or not they're now better off for having had the revolution. The French love their socialism but they are nevertheless free to recalibrate this love for a 35-hour working week, retirement at 60 and bloated pensions at the ballot box. I don't think that'll happen any time soon though :lol

Doesn't change the fact that what you have at those ballot boxes are so many million little Napoleons voting their neighbors' paychecks into their own pockets. I'm sure people have improved their lot from time to time by managing to change the ways their governments are run. What I'm talking about is a fundamental change. People for the most part use government to control someone or another, and high language notwithstanding, a few million egalitarian kings are little better than one elitist.

Only in your minds though :lol

The principles that were put into action by the establishment of this country are what laid the groundwork for the 20th century. Even when Europe was turning it's back on all of us over here, we stuck to our guns. It has nothing to do with nationality. It was a philosophical event the likes of which most of the world (and I emphatically include a majority of Americans) still doesn't understand. They established the sovereignty of the individual, and created a government with the sole purpose of defending that sovereignty. Completely unprecedented, and to this day, unrivaled. No other government has ever been so purely based on the principle of the right of the individual to freely live their own life. We have never been perfect in that regard, and fail more miserably at maintaining that tradition every day, but there is no denying the fact of what it was that our Founders set down. There is also no denying the success which that revolution engendered, and exactly to the extent that those principles were observed.

I can make a mean cheese cake. But I have never eaten roccamatta or whatever the hell devil76 called it. :dunno

Oh and by the way, the French Underground movement against the Nazis is one of the coolest WWII stories there is.

As someone whose mother is from another country (Trinidad) and has family literally all over the world (Canada, Ireland, Belize, Trinidad, Barbados, Greece) I can smell the butt-hurt coming off Gates & surfin a million miles away. It's the same crap I've heard from foreign and ex-pat relatives for over 30 years now.

It's also similar to the most successful teams in sports (like the Yankees). Unless you're a fan of that team you're all but inspired to hate them.

Trust me, the resentment towards the U.S. burns pretty damn deep. And that's before even touching some of our international political blunders. Whether it's jealousy, a distaste for our pride, or whatever... the fact is many simply don't like us. And no amount of facts or rationalizing is going to change their minds.

First, I'm not "butt-hurt" about anything. I have absolutely nothing to envy you guys about...nothing. Secondly, I never said I hated the US or anyone in it. I have friends over there and I tell them the same thing (their arrogance and lack of knowledge of other country's history but their own, is laughable). If anyone is butt-hurt it's you guys and your egos since you are learning that you DON'T do all this on your own. Maybe some of you should stop getting educated through movies like Saving Private Ryan, Argo, and Lincoln. Hint: Those stories are made up for the most part :lol

Yeah, Justin Bieber is actually from Georgia, I think. :(

That said...

Learning about history through movies. Fox News. Freedom Fries...

A lot of aspersions are being cast towards me and others in this thread based solely on your own biased views of "the typical American" (which ironically you must have culled from some form of media of your own... or the internet, which is even worse).

I need no history or cultural lessons, thanks. I was born outside of this country and probably saw more of the world in my first 30 years than most see in 20 lifetimes. I almost decided to Major in World History at school and become an Anthropologist (I decided against it simply because I wanted to do something more creative). I don't watch any cable news, and I think "Freedom Fries" are as lame as they sound.

You two guys just resent America. It doesn't really matter why. But you do. And it's colored every single comment you've made in this thread (which, by the way, was started to discuss a domestic terrorist attack and soon devolved into the same tired "U.S. vs the world" pablum). Just admit it and move on.

How did we even go from discussing the events in Boston to this anyway??

Nope, I learn it by watching Duck Dynasty :yess: Like I said, and believe it or not (and you obviously don't), I have nothing against the US. I'm just responding to the few who are flag waving and thinking you guys do it all alone.
