I completely and 100% disagree with your notion that "the entire OT has as many problems as the PT".

Then I guess we have to agree to disagree. As I've said I love Star Wars cause its a fun ride to watch and be a part of. There's enough issues in all six films to go around and none of them bother me enough to care really.

I think the acting is the same in all six movies. Same cheesy bad lines, same types of dialouge, etc. They all have the same issues with consistency I think. Meaning sometimes things just don't flow right and its in all six movies. People rip on Anakin for being annoying well Luke is the same really until the end as is the case with Anakin. I feel more care for Anakin/Obi-Wan than I do really for Luke/Obi-Wan. Just stuff like that.

I agree that the dialogue is consistently stilted throughout all 6 movies. Overall, neither trilogy is filled with master thespianship (with a couple exceptions) and the melodrama seems to be intentional. For instance, I find the conversation between Luke & Leia on Endor just as awkward and cheesy as the Anakin/Padme stuff. So I'm with you there.

Luke and/or Anakin being equally annoying? Fine. I'll go with that, too, as neither is really a favorite of mine.

To me, what really separates the 2 trilogies most of all is the focus. The OT (at least until ROTJ) is almost entirely character-driven, whereas the prequels are completely driven by plot and exposition. Quite different. The prequels also lack anything remotely subtle and sublime, like lots of stuff in ANH and TESB which to this day are my favorite moments in the saga... quiet moments between characters, true atmospheric tension, etc. The PT also really lacks a true foil character like Han Solo, and that hurts it a lot, imho, because I think the formula all but demands it. Otherwise it's just a bunch of stiff characters sitting around spouting off corny absolutes.

You guys must be fun to have in the same room at SDCC. :lol

:lol Interestingly enough, Josh and I leave our debates on the internet and it's never personal. We actually get along just fine. At SDCC, it's time to share our excitement for collecting... and BEER. :duff

I agree. Neither movie is gonna win an oscar for acting though I do really love how Ewan plays Obi-Wan. I agree I find the Luke/Leia and Anakin/Padme stuff a bit awkward.

Luke in ANH just acts like a spoiled brat which is a lot like Anakin in AOTC. They do both change more as the series go on but those two movies they're almost exact. Which makes since with the whole father/son aspect of it all. Thats why I say that.

I suppose. I look at it the same to be honest but that may be now cause we have all six movies. I care more about Anakin and his journey over the course of episodes 1-3 than I do for Luke overall. In ESB I care about Luke cause he's trying to save his friends and the universe but in ROTJ its not much until he really makes an effort to save Anakin/Vader.

Like I said though. I love SW. Its one of those sets of movies I can sit down and watch anytime. Its a great escape.

Indeed! Thats the thing I don't think some get about things. Carl is my friend. We just don't see eye 2 eye on some things and all that. Makes for interesting debate and you learn a little from each other. At SDCC thats a time where you kick back and enjoy things. Much too much is made of debates on the internet me thinks. :lol

Edit: Carl and I have roomed together.

I must admit your debates are more civil and well-versed than most I see on here. And they're actually fun to read as well. :duff

The writing in the OT is definitely as bad as the PT in parts. The OT just has the luxury of those lines being delivered by a much stronger cast.

We laugh at the redundancy of "I wish I could wish away my feelings" but how about "Its as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and then were suddenly silenced." So you're saying a lot of things suddenly happened, and then more things suddenly happened. Suddenly. :lol

But its Sir Alec so we barely notice.

Or how about a quip from one of IrishJedi's favorite scenes of the saga, "That's why you couldn't destroy me before...." Destroy me? Who says that? :lol

Hayden would have been crucified for making such utterances.

I think we both try. There's a respect factor there as well.

But I slept on the floor both times. :lecture :lol

(I was even stepped on while I was asleep by some drunken Freaks. Good times. :hi5: )

That you did. A good trooper on your part. :clap

A lot of characters, actually. It's part of the SW vocabulary. Using "destroy" is almost akin to "I have a bad feeling about this" in these movies. In fact, it's one of the things one of my childhood friends and I have gotten a kick out of all of these years.

And in that scene Luke is also referencing Vader's own words to him from TESB: "Don't make me destroy you." And later on, the Emperor joins the fray: "If you will not turn... you will be destroyed."

The use of "destroy" and "destroyed" in the SW films is great. :rock

BTW, it's used just as much in the PT... and that's a good thing. Example: Qui-Gon to Amidala: "My feelings tell me they will destroy you."

:yess:

Just because Vader and the Emperor sound cool saying something while making maniacal speeches doesn't mean its going to have the same effect when Farmboy-Luke-Turned-Jedi throws it around in casual conversation.

Its the OT equivalent of Obi-Wan and Padme over-using the term "younglings." An okay and appropriately weird thing for Yoda to say, not so much for the "normal" characters, even in SW.

You're referring to a creature that is supposedly a wise old master who talks backwards.

Apologist. :wink1:

It's not supposed to have an "effect". It's just the vernacular they use. You're over-thinking it.

Why is this even a topic of discussion? :huh Some characters are just "cooler" than others and some actors are better than others. It is what it is.
