I was liking his argument, but he lost me here.

I agreed with him when he said we could take it as an artistic choice, I can get behind that, but then he contradicted himself, "meet the racial quota" --> "it's the world we live in" like it's ok to race swap just because the world is more diverse.

Doesn't matter if the world is "more diverse today", because today there are more diverse characters than ever, there's no need for race swaps when you can flesh out characters that already are diverse, I don't want a Mexican Batman, we already have a Mexican Batman, Zorro, same as I don't want a Zorro ******.

I don't have a problem connecting with Batman because he's not Mexican, if people have that problem and can only feel included or identified by having their ethnicity/culture portrayed on screen, then maybe they're the racists ones.

TLDR: If it's an artistic choice and makes the characters and their interactions better, or more unique in a good way, great, if it's just a race swap, then it's dumb, period.

I have seen Chronicle and the character interactions are great, so I have faith it makes sense.

:exactly: :lecture :exactly:

And you have your Mexican Punisher: Machete :lol

Such a weak attempt at damage control and justification. And yes, his comment about going outside and looking at the people around you just CONFIRMS that his casting is some dumb affirmative action BS that no one needed. It has *nothing* to do with ignorant basement dwelling fans who want their heroes to be white. The Avengers just cleared their roster of FOUR white males in favor of two black guys for crying out loud and we loved it.

Nobody looks at MCU Nick Fury and goes, "oh good, his skin is the color of a friend of a friend." What an idiotic thing for him to say. No, we go, "Sam Jackson, sweet, the coolest guy in cinema for over 20 years now. That makes sense, right on."

That guy really needs to stop talking about his movie.

To be fair, the Avengers just cleared their roster and added two black males, but the important members that left the team will still be playing a more prominent role in the next big ensemble film coming next year.

Regarding Samuel Jackson, I think people are only okay with it because he was at least black in the ultimate Universe, and I believe his look was based on Samuel Jackson anyway, so of course fans won't be upset.

The real problem to me is a majority of the A and B list superheroes are Caucasian, which makes sense because considering most these characters were all created more than 50 years ago. I honestly can't name 10 black Marvel or DC characters that could headline their own movie and make a guaranteed half a billion dollars at the box office.

I remember Ridley Scott doing an interview not too long ago where he basically admitted that hiring black actors for lead roles is a financial risk due to all the racism in and especially outside of the United States. So hiring a black actor, to play a black obscure character from the comics for a big budget summer blockbuster isn't going to make as much money as a getting a black actor to play an A list white character like Spider-Man, that's a far less risk.

I also don't see his comments as being contradictory at all, and I certainly don't think he was casted as Johnny Storm because he's black, I'm pretty sure it has more to do with him being a talented young up and coming actor, and being friends with Trank. Minus the skin color, which isn't important to the character whatsoever, I think Michael B Jordan is an absolutely perfect choice to play Johnny Storm, but the internet trolls seem to only care about his skin color, and I bet at least a quarter of them aren't even real Johnny Storm fans.

Except the director and actor aren't saying that. They keep talking about Trank's interracial family and this world we live in, bla bla bla. I just find that dumb. It'd be like if Peter Jackson said, "I look out my window and I see women, and I'm in a relationship with a woman, so Bilbo is female now you haterz1!!"

If you want to go make some autobiographical commentary that has nothing to do with Marvel Comics well, go make up your own characters and put them on screen.

Their whole approach just rubs me the wrong way. Marvel Comics has worked in black versions of their characters for decades; we've had a couple black Captain Americas now and even a black "Bucky" (who later became Battlestar) and I was totally cool with it. These guys are just coming across as self-righteous *********s who aren't even backing up their convictions with a decent looking movie.

Fury Road is apparently the most "feminist" action movie in history and do you know what? Miller did it without making Max a girl.

Well, Miller was smart, he split Max into a female, she even gets his exact same blackeye.

Wait a minute, imagine if GM had made Furiosa been in Max's imagination, Fight Club style. :horror

Oh man, you think that angle would've worked Khev?

Furiosa watching Max walk away at the end was really Max on the platform watching his "Mad" side walking away!

Superman should have a super power where he looks like you want him to look.

When a person from Bangladesh sees him they see a Bangladeshi looking Superman. :lol

Pretty much.
It's just an appeal thing, like having a hot female in skin-tight suit.
*just wait for pturtle or Nova to point out that Marvel has Black Widow*

As a literal interpretation of the characters in the movie, no. :lol But metaphorically? Hell yeah! :duff

He did his part to minimize the creation of "future Maxes" by helping Furiosa save wives and children and live happily ever after with her people so that she can be free of her own demons and not wander the wastes as an empty shell like he did.

My thing is that MBJ is a *********. I'm not a huge fan of Smith, and honestly; I am against the casting only because Arrow did it better. And Deadshot speaks, so Smith as Black Spider would have been more preferred for me.

And actually the Smith thing was a big thing people had against. Surprising considering many don't like Robbie and didn't riot over the first live-action Harley; but did on Smith as DS.

Like him or hate him though (personally I'm not a fan) Smith is an icon. Michael Clarke Duncan, Sam Jackson, Will Smith, those are all choices that make you go, "okay these are big league characters," not some preachy attempt at political correctness.

To the trolls on the Internet, I want to say: Get your head out of the computer. Go outside and walk around. Look at the people walking next to you. Look at your friends’ friends and who they’re interacting with. And just understand this is the world we live in. It’s okay to like it.

It felt like...

Not unlike the Joker tatoos, Johnny Storm's race is the very least of my concerns with this film. I had a knee jerk opposition to their changing a classic character for PC purposes or whatever, but it's not even a remote concern for me at this point. Guy looks like he could embody the essence of Johnny's personality, and that's what matters (unlike SLJ's Fury, who I never cared for and never will for being so fundamentally different from classic Fury).

He really is a tool.

"This is a family movie about four friends who are brought together by a series of unfortunate events to create unity and a team.
That’s the message of the movie, if people can just allow themselves to see it."

That's the "message" of your movie and yet while you're marketing this tale of "unity" you're calling people names and telling them to get out of the house. Keep your message dude. Not interested.

I found the trailer to be mildly interesting. But every time that moron opens his mouth he just reminds me how much I *don't* need to give this film an ounce of my time, especially when I can just catch AoU or FR again instead.

Fox really needs to shut him up.

So if the actor is more established its okay but if the actor is up and coming it isn't?

MBJ got the role because the director thought he fit the characters traits perfectly, he wasn't cast because he was black or to force diversity.
