I don't care if he runs geeks down or not. Robert Downey, Jr. has been very derogative toward geeks in the past. Just give us a good FF movie.

That's the thing. A good movie covers a multitude of sins. RDJ, Harrison Ford, and so on have indicated that they've been less than impressed with certain fan behavior. But, you know, Iron Man, Raiders, etc. If Ford had done interviews a while back saying, "Yeah, Hollywood Homicide, you know you'll all see it you ignorant basement dwelling *****es," well, I would have laughed at him too.

Or more accurately if Ford was playing Luke Cage and made those same comments.

:exactly:

Why should he suck up to those who dismiss him in the role because of his skin colour. Would be like a woman being nice to people who call her ugly or fat.
If fanboys are gonna act like *******s toward him the why shouldn't he treat them like *******s in return. He wasn't insulting all fans, he was insulting the haters

Because it's *incredibly* petty and unprofessional. Affleck was the brunt of probably the single largest outpouring of internet geek hate I've ever seen. Did he tell everyone to eff off? No, he quietly went and made himself into what appears to be a completely kickass Batman. And THAT will shut everyone up.

Anyway, I've wasted enough time talking about this dope.

Except the director and actor aren't saying that. They keep talking about Trank's interracial family and this world we live in, bla bla bla. I just find that dumb. It'd be like if Peter Jackson said, "I look out my window and I see women, and I'm in a relationship with a woman, so Bilbo is female now you haterz1!!"

If you want to go make some autobiographical commentary that has nothing to do with Marvel Comics well, go make up your own characters and put them on screen.

Their whole approach just rubs me the wrong way. Marvel Comics has worked in black versions of their characters for decades; we've had a couple black Captain Americas now and even a black "Bucky" (who later became Battlestar) and I was totally cool with it. These guys are just coming across as self-righteous *********s who aren't even backing up their convictions with a decent looking movie.

Fury Road is apparently the most "feminist" action movie in history and do you know what? Miller did it without making Max a girl.

They wouldn't be bringing that up if fans weren't make it an issue. The beginning of his letter basically stated that he's read all the backlash online, most of it being about his skin color, that's where the issue is coming from and they're responding to that. Trank and Jordan's stance is basically why does Johnny Storm need to be white? And furthermore why do fans care so much about his skin color? It's all in response to the backlash they're getting from the Internet. I actually think they're handling it just fine. I don't see what's wrong with telling everyone that this is a modern take on the F4, this isn't the 60s where interracial families were non existent, it's a common thing now, I don't see what's wrong with that.

Funny how there is little talk of Deadshots race change in Suicide Squad but all the time with this

That's because most people don't even know what Deadshot looks like under the mask. Johnny Storm is a much more popular character, all my friends that don't even read comics know who he is, what's his power, and how he looks, not one of them know who the hell Deadshot is. It seems only okay to change the ethnicity of C list characters, but making Batman, Superman, or Spider-Man black is some how a crime.

And like Kara stated, Downey has said far worse.

Funny that people hate MBJ because of how he's responding to trolls on the Internet. These are the same people who take time out of their day to make a funny gif or meme. I don't see why he needs to laugh it off, and there's also a difference between the backlash Affleck received, people didn't want him in the role because they felt he couldn't act, people don't want MBJ in the role because he's black.

That's a valid question. I'm not against it. It's the way they are responding to that question that inclines me to say "take your mediocre looking movie and shove it."

If they had said, "this is our way of grounding this film in modern reality. Black tactical armor didn't exist in 1939 so it wouldn't have even been a thought for Bob Kane to dress Batman that way but Nolan did because he wanted to make the character more contemporary. Interracial families weren't very common in the 60's and wouldn't even have occurred to Lee and Kirby and so we thought that would be a fun angle to explore as we are re-imagining this team for the 21st Century."

That's all they had to say. Done. And then I'd get to say, "all right, let's see how that approach works." As has already been stated there have been quite a few race, costume, and origin changes for superheroes over the years. Some have worked spectacularly and others not so much. But I don't know that I've ever seen such an unproven filmmaking team make such oft putting comments about their own take and their own fans.

I think that's just "race card" BS. A personal attack is a personal attack and the onslaught against Affleck made national news. He took it like a man. MBJ certainly has not.

But this movie has been getting ripped on since it was rumored that MBJ would be playing Johnny Storm. That's before all the suits, casting, posters, even the synopsis was revealed. Now if you aren't particularly excited for the movie based on what you've seen from the trailer so far, then that's fine (I wasn't blown away either) but you'd be lying to yourself if you think this movie is actually being torn to pieces by the comic book community because of the trailers. In fact, this movie was being attacked before casting was even official.

Like Kara has said, Downey has said and done far worse, how is MBJ anymore of a ****** than him?

I have no idea what RDJ has ever said against fans so I can't comment. All *I* know is that the trailers for Iron Man looked awesome, the movie was totally sweet, and his portrayal of the character has become iconic. So right now I see no parallels whatsoever between him and IM and MDJ and FF.

This whole thing is about the guy's race though :lol

Affleck handled things just fine but he was being attacked for his acting ability, that's a fair reason to attack the guy. Attacking someone for taking a job because of their race is whole lot worse if you ask me, and and not so easy to laugh off.

Telling people who are on the Internet all day complaining and making disrespectful memes to go outside and have a life is actually good advice :lol

Boo freaking hoo. Seriously. Someone needs to say it. So the rich, famous, handsome (I guess, right?) black guy is taking some heat (though minimal compared to other actors like Affleck, Gadot, etc.) over playing a *white* guy in a movie where he gets to become more famous, make more millions, and live every kid's dream? Sorry, his whole "Woe is me, I guess I'm just the Martin Luther King Jr of the next generation" is kind of pathetic. Get over yourself dude.

Yeah, people are idiots and take messing with source material way too seriously, and I'll include myself in that bunch. But he isn't the first black guy to play a white hero, and if people are singling him out when they didn't Michael Clarke Duncan, SLJ, or Will Smith, well maybe he needs to take a moment and allow for the fact that his skin color isn't what is oft putting about him, as much as he'd like it to be.

More BS. In fact--hold on my mom is telling me it's time to go upstairs and fold my undershirts. BRB.

But Khev is right, Trank and his actor there certainly didn't take the high road with their responses.

They did the equivalent of complaining about whiners while whining themselves.

What is that called again, oh that's right, hypocrites!

I think he's taken just as much heat as Affleck and Gal. I also don't remember any real backlash for Samuel Jackson being casted as Fury, and Will Smith for being Deadshot, Michael Clarke Duncan did experience a little though.

I'll guess we should just agree to disagree. I personally don't think what he's doing is pathetic, i actually wish more actors were like him and Robert Downey, makes for more entertaining news and it's nice to see the fanboys get put in their place from time to time.

I don't remember reading any interviews where they were whining. Most of the time they just explained themselves, albeit they were a little snarky and condescending at times but they never came off like the whiny fanboys out there that make up 80% of the Internet.

Well, he's also best buds with the most famous basement dweller of them all in Kevin Smith :lol

Fantastic Four is being made because its an established comic book property at the height of comic book movie mania. The property was established by the fans and yet the idea that the fans have no right to be upset that the film doesn't resemble the comic. They are expected to take what is offered with a smile and just hand over their cash and if they object they are called racist and hateful.

Based on everything we know so far, I'd say it's being more faithful to the comic compared to most of the superhero movies coming these days.

Actually, it's being made because otherwise they'll lose the rights to the movies, in this time that's not the right financial choice. :lol
The intellectual property/source material itself, was almost irrelevant, even more so before this movie (and it's subsequent hate train) was announced
Meaning: The fans weren't really there, or were very few of them, or am I wrong?

I'll still give the benefit of the doubt to this movie, but I don't like the approach of this dude, if he wanted to tell the "fans" to **** off, he should've done so, "this is an artistic choice, **** off" without justifying himself, but instead he went "**** off, SJW SJW SJW SJW iz da world we live in nao", which is neither taking the high road, nor taking a stand.

I think he did a good job telling the internet trolls to **** off while also raising awareness about the lack of leading black actors in Hollywood today. Studios look at it as a huge risk having a black man headline a big budget film, that's why it's taking Marvel forever to bring us a Black Panther movie. The fact we got a GOTG movie before a Black Panther movie is pretty incredible when you think about it.

I didn't get a SJW vibe from his letter.

Yes, but none of that justifies using affirmative action to change characters (IF that's what this is), yes, there is a lack of black (and EVERY OTHER RACE) leads in Hollywood, then make movies about black characters, don't swap races just for the sake of it, isn't it clear by now how counter productive that actually is?

I would kill for a Spawn movie, and it would be equally stupid to turn Spawn white or any other race.

Regarding GotG, why is it incredible? Zoe Saldana is black of Latin-american ancestry and Batista is half Filipino, that sounds pretty diverse to me, and they didn't make a big fuzz about it.

There's SJW all over it, "look at your friend next to you, he isn't white, look!"
