They might push on. The writings not on the wall yet but it's not looking good.

As for merchandise. Fox getting the rights and getting toys on shelves would be a good thing for X-Men. Certainly better than Disney sitting on them. Fox won't relent full movie merch rights and that's the only scenario in which Disney would merchandise X-Men again

Fox already owns the X-Men TV rights and they don't have a large enough consumer products division to adequately monetize merchandising rights, so these things aren't of much value to Fox.

My guess is Fox will try to reboot it one more time within the X-Men universe, before they even think about giving the rights back.

It'll be interesting to see if Fox decides to back out of the sequel they already announced for 2017. Granted a handful of bad reviews doesn't necessarily mean a box office flop, but there's a lot of indication suggesting the movie will probably massively underperform.

I believe Marvel/Disney own all rights save the film rights. I doubt they'll interject this into the X-Men franchise, if it's really as bad as everyone is predicting/reporting. As for the sequel, remember Green Lantern 2 was greenlit and announced and Blake Lively even spoke about looking at Star Sapphire costuming when the movie first came out and we all see where that went. :lol

Bingo. Until Marvel gets the rights we won't see much mutant merchandise. Fox's best move is to pull a Sony and broker a shared deal. Then they could get the merchandising machine running as well as cross-overs, etc.

Fantastic Four would be a pretty cool post Infinity War phase for MS. Team up with the Avengers to take on Galactus and Silver Surfer. We'll just have to see what happens.

I think they'd more likely wish to trade rights (F4 for X-Men Merch & TV) and if that's a no go then next I could see them possibly arranging a shared deal like with Spidey but only for F4. Marvel helps out on producing a Fox solo reboot, Fox get the benefit of the MCU connection while Marvel can utilise villains, if that's a no go then after that I imagine Fox holding the rights until the next deadline. Those are the three most likely scenarios IMO. Unlike F4 and Spidey X-Men doesn't need the MCU boost

This is jumping the gun though as things aren't set in stone just yet, even through the outlook is bleak

We need more Xmen merch. We have some sure but not from movies and recent comics.

People are claiming that the embargo helped this but I'm interested to see just how close this is:

In spite of a development process plagued by rumors that the sky was falling, it looks like Fox's reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise will lead this weekend's domestic box office.

Fantastic Four is expected to gross between $40M and $50M for the three-day weekend, nearly doubling Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation's second week, which is expected to generate about $25 million, according to Deadline.

They say that the film is tracking better than Ant-Man, which opened with $57 million, although the estimate doesn't back that up. It's possible they expect the CinemaScore to suffer and word of mouth not to be as strong as the well-received Ant-Man.

Shaun the Sheep, The Gift and Ricki and The Flash will all open this week and open with between $7 million and $10 million. It's likely Ant-Man, Minions and Vacation will be in the thick of that pack.

I wonder if it'll get number 1 and if there is a severe drop in week 2.

It can't be worse than Ant-Man.

It's certainly shaping up to be!
