Wow lot's of votes for "The Departed". I myself didn't really care for the film. It had wonderful acting and directing but the overall story just came off too easy and satisfied both sides (those rooting for good guys or those rooting for the bad guys) which annoyed me to no end.

But anywho. There are several movies I really enjoyed this year...

V for Vendetta
The Illusionist
Little Miss Sunshine
Pan's Labyrnth
Clerks II
Lady in the Water (I know I'm the only one hehe)
Fearless
The Queen
Casino Royale

But I find I have a three way tie for best overall film of 2006...

Pan's Labyrinth
Little Miss Sunshine
V for Vendetta

I still haven't seen "Children of Men" yet so I'm wondering if one of the above three will be bumped out (since I've been hearing such good things about it).

AMEN TOE! Running Scared is by far the most underrated movie for sometime. I bought it on DVD and I only buy 1 or 2 DVDs per year so you can see I think highly of it. See, it's one of those great rewatchable movies like the ShawShank Redemption, Frequency, Rat Race, and Shaun of the Dead.

TOE if you love Running Scared you'll love Crank just as much!!!

YEA...Crank was an amazing movie. Statham was awesome in it and Amy Smart..hubba, hubba. Great story with GREAT action. Recommend EVERYBODY check out Crank at least once, you won't regret it..

I'm sorry that you couldn't enjoy it. But, why must an adaptation/remake be compared to the original for validation? Why can't it be judged for its own merit or failures? Examples: The Magnificent Seven and A Fistful of Dollars are remakes of "Shichinin no Samurai" (Seven Samurai) and "Yojimbo." As much as I love the Kurosawa originals, I cannot belittle the remakes by saying they failed in comparison. Those were excellent films in their own right and deserve the status of "classic." Whether it be a book, story, TV show or a previous film, I choose to see any adaptations as brand new films. (I even gave the new "All the King's Men" an honest try...meh). And I feel "The Departed" falls into this category.

Good point. I agree on the most part, however in the case of "The Departed" I can't really classify it as an adaptation as much as a direct port. Scorsese almost shot the same movie with American actors. He didn't make it his own, and for a film that won so many awards barely even three years ago he needed to do something to it, hell he even shot some of the exact same shots. Not only that but he took the soul out of the movie. The thing that made Infernal Affairs so great is....

spoiler below....

The fact that the two main characters were best friends growing up and throughout their careers. You actually cared about the characters and their outcomes. I sat through Scorcese's rehash and could have cared less about anyone. Why should I? They didn't? It had no soul. Again the acting of Jack and Mark were phenomenal.

With the Da Vinci Code, they left out all the rational and reasoning that Landgon took into account to discover the "clues". Obviously it was only a 2 hour movie and with all the history, etc. it would have taken 6 hours to truly represent the book, but he just seemed to go from clue-to-clue in an insanely quick amount of time...

That's one of the reasons why I DON'T want to see it; to show if I'm not so lazy, I can actually achieve something...
Plus they dumbed down the girl. They made it where he was solving everything and she was pretty much just looking on. This is a spoiler coming up so stop reading if you haven't seen it. The one thing that really pissed me off was they made it so her grandfather wasn't really her grandfather and just some random guardian, even though it made more sense for him to be her grandfather like in the book, especially since they kept the part about her brother and grandmother being alive.

My favorites of the year are:

Pan's Labyrinth (this is overall the best i saw in the year)
V for Vendetta
Casino Royale

Crank and Running Scared are two of the best movies of the year, easily in my top ten. Both of them redefined the action thriller.

As for best movie - I'll have to give it to Children of Men.

As for most enjoyable - Casino Royale is probably my favorite.

Little Miss Sunshine.

I must say I was caught off guard at how entertaining MI:3 was.
Especially after the 2nd outing.
Despite Cruises' off screen antics he has loads of screen charisma.
I liked it more than Casino Royale.
Craig mumbled the famous line but his opening action sequence was riveting.

It's a toss-up for me...

Casino Royale and Superman Returns.

Both for the same reason...breathing new life into stale franchises. And I'm anxious for the follow-ups to both films (although I hope Singer doesn't remake the General Zod storyline...just wouldn't make any sense!!)

I'm surprised there was no mention of it, but 'Stranger Than Fiction' has to be my favorite movie of the year. Ferrell was awesome, Maggie Gyllenhaall (sp?) was adorable and Dustin Hoffman was funny as hell. I also loved Pirates 2 and Pan's Labyrinth.

So:

1) Stranger Than Fiction

2) Pirates of the Carribean 2

3) Pan's Labyrinth

Didn't see too many movies this year....if I had to pick one though, it would be Pirates of The Carribean: Dead Man's Chest followed by Disney's Cars...

I am surprised you didn't read my post. hehe Ahem, check er' out!

Yes, Stranger than Fiction was great. It's no Being John Malkovich or Adaptation, but it really showed Will Ferrell in a new light.

I am curious to what everyones favorite movie of '06 was. When you post you can only type ONE movie. I know it is tempting to type your favorite and then 5 other movies that you liked... but that is not the game:D

I will start...

The Departed

I guess nobody liked your game. :(
