I was thoroughly disappointed with Apocalypto, it had what felt like to me an incredibly thin storyline, and an overabundance of "blood jokes." Sure it was riveting, but not because I cared about the characters, only because you were waiting to see who would be - cut, hit, shot, de-capitated, sawn, or otherwise killed next.

I was hoping for more.

No one has mentioned Dreamgirls yet, I just saw it today and while maybe not my favorite of 2006, it's a great film. Jennifer Hudson is definitely a star and Eddie Murphy does his best performing in years.

Apocalypto. Yeah its a chase flick but its the Mayan jungles, not the tired streets of LA or NY. I also wanna see Letters from Iwo when its released.

While Murphy and Hudson's performances were good, the whole movie just left me feeling meh, and I have nothing against musicals, I actually enjoyed Chicago.

Saw it,enjoyed it, but not one of the best of 2006 IMO. Broadway show so script was already set and they really couldn't futz with it too much. But was overly idealized. According to Mary Wilson (one of the original Supremes) in her autobio "Dreamgirls", the real-life "Ellie" (Florence Ballard) died young and alone (heart attack?) with 2 small kids and living on welfare I believe. She never made a comeback and the Motown crowd pretty much abandoned her. And "Deena" (Diana Ross)? ....puh-leeze! Her ambition and manipulative nature was as strong as "Curtis" (Barry Gordy); the show was a total whitewash of the woman. This show was such an obvious reference to Supremes, Motown, etc., it begged to be compared to the real story .... and lost in the comparison.

Jennifer Hudson WAS wonderful...but am sure she was cast because she could vocally and emotionally nail "But I'm Tellling You....". She'll probably get an Oscar nom for Best Supporting and deserves that recognition. Eddie Murphy finally, really gets to show us his stuff (instead of just doing schtick); he wasted so much of his talent on horrible properties. Dunno if his performance is Oscar-worthy, but shows he deserves (and can deliver on) better material.

I don't know the real story of the Supremes, but you can't really have a musical that isn't somewhat upbeat. Ignoring the real-life events, the characters were multi-dimensional, the plot was well structured, the performances were fabulous. I enjoyed it almost as much as Moulin Rouge and I recognize it's a better movie than MR mainly because of the points above. I enjoyed it far more than Chicago, although I'm a fan of that film too.
