Avengers is a key part of a larger series of films that isn't even halfway done. Some of these actors are only a third of the way into their contracts. We have a good 6-10 movies left in this interconnected wave of films, all maintaining continuity rather than rebooting. It's unprecedented and Avengers will remain a landmark film in the "comic book/superhero" genre for years to come. The fan base isn't going anywhere.

I thought he was getting at the debatability of the landmark tag put on avengers for being a superhero team up film

We've seen it before with X Men and Watchmen

The manner of how Avengers is put together is unique but that's about it

Yeah, the Avengers will be something fans go to as a must watch comic book film for a long time. It helps because the world is staying tied together and because the films have flat out kicked ass.

Well, it must've done something more to have blown past all but 2 other films in unadjusted box office history. :huh

Box office success doesn't make it a landmark. It makes it a success. Avengers isn't going to be a turning point in cinema for anything. Judging by the look and direction of Iron Man 3 it's not even going to have an influence within its own universe outside of story.

It's a really good movie, but landmark? If landmark means making the biggest opening weekend and 3rd highest unadjusted gross then sure :lol

I think Tom meant landmark within this particular genre.

Its going to have some influence on Iron Man 3. They said as much at the panel but Iron Man 3 will also be its own solo story.

In the sheer scope of things it completely disagrees with both of you (who admittedly liked TDKR better). Who would think that a comic book movie could pull that much? In it's very first theatrical release! TDK was a wake-up call. And Avengers took that ball and ran with it all the way to number three of all time (unadjusted). This was also just after a single release, unlike the other two who only sit above it solely because of egotistical re-re-releases.

A landmark defines an event that changes the game. You can't bottle the Avengers success. It made a ____ ton. That's an accomplishment, not a landmark.

30 years from now I think people will look on the Dark Knight trilogy as Nolan trying to do something with a comic series that had never been done before. I think the Avengers will be remembered as the film that made a lot of money. Neither of them will be considered landmarks.

Oh. :monkey1

Zero is the word that describes how much that has anything to do with it.

As an esthetic landmark, the Nolan trilogy is going to be hard to beat.

Avengers can boast being the best comicbook movie to date. I wish someone would make an X-Men movie of that caliber.

Nolan didn't make comicbook movies.

I would agree that box office doesn't make something better, just more popular with the masses.

Would anyone consider Shrek the greatest cartoon character of all time?
