The way the media behave is at times an utter disgrace, they always latch onto any young player that has a few decent games for their club, build them up as the next "savior" and then destroy them when they can't live up to the insane expectations,

The first time I remember it happening was with Paul Gascoigne but it has happened to so many players since I can't even remember them all and it's a miracle that there haven't been more cases of players having some kind of breakdown as eventually happened with Gazza.

Pundits are usually ex-players so you would think that they would be more realistic but I suppose they don't want to be seen to rock the boat and risk losing an easy payday so most of them play safe.

Absolutely, you can only imagine the amount of stress some individuals feel. That's why in some ways I feel bad for Rooney. Despite the fact that he initiates some of the criticism himself with his actions and attitude, he seems to garner an incredible amount criticism that is sometimes unwarranted. Case in point, just recently in the last two matches where a lot of people place the blame solely on him for losing.

Watching Iran, they have done amazingly well to keep Argentina out so far and they have had couple of good chances. Makes you realize just how bad England were in this tournament. Lots of people have said its the best England have played in years. BS.

I've been critical of his recent attitude but 3-4 years ago he was genuinely a top class player and even now he is as good as anything England have got when in the right mood.

But he can only do so much on his own and if he's played out of position then his ability to influence things will be reduced.

The other problem is that he plays for a team that's dominated English football for the last 20 years, there's a lot of jealousy and bitterness from fans of teams like Arsenal and Liverpool and that kind of hatred goes way beyond friendly banter.

With that kind of bile being thrown at him by England "fans" then it's no wonder he looks like he can't be bothered a lot of the time.

Good point, I'd probably have a "**** you" attitude too with some of the hate he gets. :lol

I think he cares about playing for England on some level otherwise he'd have walked away by now but when many of his own countries fans are against him it must be hard to give a damn.

It would also help if he had decent players around him. Even Messi and Ronaldo need a decent supporting cast as they can't always win games on their own.

True, Ronaldo isn't nearly as effective for Portugal as he is for Madrid. And it can't be easy for Rooney when he's playing next to a player like Welbeck. :lol
