I was actually, as crazy as it sounds, considering crashing SDCC this year since I'm out of work and looking to not start back up until August! That would be crazy...

You may want to look at flights into OTHER cities. Dusseldorf is expensive, yes. Try flights to Frankfurt, or Brussels, Belgium. Train rides aren't terribly far to Dusseldorf, and flights may be cheaper. If you're really adventurous, try Berlin or Munich. Those are farther away, but could make for a nice trip if you've never been to Germany before.
