I've been wondering about this for a while now. Is anyone here interested in this magnificent sport? I've been playing it all my live and I was curious to see whether people here might actually enjoy this sport, considering the fact that some members aren't from the US. The World Cup starts on Friday and I've been following the preliminaries very closely. I lived in Germany for 10 years before moving to the US, but unfortuanetly, I can't go to the World Cup because of work. You guys even know what the World cup is??:D

I can't wait for the world cup to start. My family only got into soccer a few years ago after my uncle spent 2 years in Brazil. Our DVR is going to be set for the games. I'd love to see the USA do well, but know that there is no chance. I'd rather have Germany win as my next (and more logical choice). I still think McFarlane is an idiot for not making soccer/football figures. He has every other big sport made, why not the biggest? Who wouldn't love to have a David Beckham figure? My family likes him so much, our Beagle is named Beckham.

That's awesome!! I wish Mcfarlane would do soccer figures too. Mcfarlane should do the classic players like Maradona, Beckenbauer, or Pele. That would just too great. My favorite team is Germany and second favorite would be Netherland. They screwed themselves during the last World Cup, but they have a really strong team this time.

I used to work for ARCO, no not the gas station, its an olymic training center for American Competetive athletes. I met several soccer player there, but didn't really care for most of them. But now, I'm thinking, Dude, I ate lunch with those guys.

My son is playing now. I'm not all that familiar with it but am learning. I am interested in the Revell Kick-o-Mania 12" figures even though I can't find the two that I want.

four weeks of world cup action.........can't come soon enough, got the weekend off, weather is supposed to be v.hot, getting my mates round, barbecue lit & lots off cold beer in the fridge

Pity Scotland didn't qualify but I'll support England

Friday
Germany vs Costa Rica
Poland vs Ecuador

Saturday
England vs Paraguay
Trinidad & Tob vs Sweden
Argentina vs Ivory Coast

Sunday
Australia vs Japan
USA vs Czech Rep
Italy vs Ghana

Both of my brothers were in Brazil for 2 years each so they had lots of soccer fans there. I went to New York and met lots of people who were on professional teams in the past. Soccer rocks.

i'm a manchester united fan. as for international teams i root for brazil.

eagerly waiting for the world cup to kick off.

Most of my family are Man U fans and my grandmother is also a rabid Liverpool fan. So England is also a favorite. My uncle obviously likes Brazil for living there for two years. I just can't stand a team winning everytime. That is why I've never been much of a Yankees fan, they win too much. They need other teams win besides Brazil.

In similar news, Real Madrid will be playing Real Salt Lake here in Utah! I might actually be able to see Beckham in person if my family can get tickets (and he doesn't get traded like when we went to see Man U play Celtics in Seattle a few years ago).

Why are you americans call it soccer??? I mean, you kick a BALL with your Feets. and the name Fotball!
What you guys call fotball is a ball you mostly hold in your hands and maby kick it with your foot once or twice, and for that you have to call another player to the court...

make no sence?!?! :rotfl

Hey Calle, it comes from when the first "league" was set up in Nineteenth
century England, featuring teams like Notts County and Bolton Wanderers etc...they were largely made up of working class/blue collar people so they formed a "union" or an association, so it became association football...or soccer for short. The short to differentiate it from rugby football, which was invented when some chap called William Webb Ellis at Rugby Public (that's private over here) School picked up the soccer ball and ran with it.

Believe it or not there is still a class element in England that looks down on soccer as a working class sport yet regards rugby as a "gentleman's game" because of it's posh school origins. In fact I have heard the following quoted:

"Soccer is a gentleman's game played by barbarians while rugby is a barbarous game played by gentlemen!

Hummmm I wonder what you uncle was doing in Brazil for "2 years"???

I too spent "2 Years" in Brazil and learned to like Futebol. Still love American Football better. I was in Brazil in 1994 when Brazil won the World Cup---CRAZY STUFF!!!!

REAL Madrid VS REAL Salt Lake!!! Can't wait!!!

To follow on from my "professor Boring-ass" entry earlier, it does amaze me that soccer is so low key in the U.S. Yet there is an undercurrent of interest.
The Fox soccer channel gives superb coverage of the English Premier League and other major leagues around the world. My brother has only lived outside of Southern California for one of his 41 years and although his first loves are Basketball and American football, he is really interested in soccer. He is well informed about what goes on in the game and will watch more of the World Cup than I will in the UK.
My Mom was known as a "soccer Mom" because of the sheer amount of ferrying around to soccer games she did....in fact most Moms in the US now seem to get that name!
Maybe if the US team do well, soccer will pick up more interest but I still think soccer will not take off in the US until the game can be divided into quarters, so that drinks can be picked up etc and TV advertisers can make more money from commercial breaks.
