Don't jump to conclusion Dusty! Zidane is an exceptional player and from what I've read the Italien player said some very racist comments towards him. If it weren't for Zidane, France wouldn't have made it to the finals or even to the Round of 16.

I'm not jumping to anything. Yes, he's a great player. Doesn't excuse what he did. I played soccer competively for nearly 20 years - players talk trash, that's what they do. If you lose your cool and strike out physically, that's your problem, not theirs. Dumbest move from any player in the entire 2006 Cup. And from a Captain to boot - in the Final, with the game on the line - what a horrible way to end an awesome career

I have to agree, I played competitvely as a kid through NCAA Div 3 Collegiate Soccer and this was a brainsnap meltdown. Ok, these guys were on each other all day, exchanged words, fouls, things got heated etc. but what Zidane did was vicious, selfish and self destructive. Not only could he have let the initial trashtalking slide and played ball but he didn't, he backed up, faced off with the guy and took a run at him like some raging bull. How could he not know he would get red-carded, of course he knew...

It was ugly, may have caused them to lose when they had the upper hand, disgraced himself, his team and his nation and will always be remembered for this indulgent act of violence, stupid...

betcha he doesn't retire now or just retires from club ball so he can rehab his image and keep his endorsements which will inevitably be in jeopardy.

For me i hope germany will do this in 2010.
