And that's where the price divides those in the market...thus it is limited...to what number or time frame is yet to be announced.

But I'm pretty sure Gentle Giant is targeting folks who've been willing and able to pay the current prices on the classic figure,
but who may be frustrated at the lack of a mint condition supply,
and thus gives an alternate to a pristine original alien,
without devaluing the original Kenner alien's rarity by re-creating an exact copy; a substitute supply to meet demand.

By making the figure larger, they have the advantage of selling to those who already own originals;
who might want a complement or companion piece to their Kenner Alien, like in my case.

Some collectibles aren't intended to make a non-stop killing, but to be something of value and beef up the company's overall brand, and help create a new niche and sell The company's niche offerings at large....in this case, the reissuing of jumbo sized versions of classic figures, whether Star Wars or Alien.

This is a niche item aimed at a very niche market...
If it was aimed at a newer, bigger market, they could've easily priced it a LOT lower...somewhere close to what a figure in that scale would cost these days and make an absolute killing, but they aren't aimed at the casual fan, when i originally thought they would be.

Heck, if jakks could fill the market with $15-$40 31" darth vaders, and get even the casual or part time fans to pick this vader up in droves,
GG could've easily done it also...like someone mentioned, technically speaking he's hollow plastic,
he is not made out of gold, but it is the limitation and the provenance of the piece or its features that will ultimately determine it's value.

That said, I HOPE JAKKS GETS THE LICENSE TO DO A 31" 1979 ALIEN....

It's too bad they didn't do a straight up recast, but I have a feeling, either another company will someday, or they just won't, to retain the value of the originals.....but time will tell

..there IS obviously a market willing to buy this product...
And
...almost every major toy from the past has been recast almost exactly, from fisher price toys to Barbie Doll, to original hot wheels, Star Wars figures (the 4 pack with Vader, Luke, Han, Chewie circa 1995/6)

This pretty much sums it for my feelings-again, I pre-ordered this for a few reasons-the nostalgia, the size, and the limited label. Who can determine GG's thinking at this point-maybe the price is so high that they will make only a couple of hundred of these and that's it-if that's the case, it will be sought after for a premium a few years from now. I can always change my mind and cancel before Q4, but I prefer to play it safe and secure one with a $100 discount to boot.

I read in this article that Diamond is doing a reproduction of the 18" original. Will definitely be cheaper than GG's version, but whether the quality will be there is another question. Definitely curious about it though.

I read about that also-lots of good Alien stuff on the horizon-depending on the quality of the Diamond Select, I might cancel the GG Jumbo-if the DS quality is up there with original packaging, I wonder what kind of effect it will have on the vintage Kenner original value.

I thought diamond select was going to do small scale vehicles at one point.
I might consider their 18" alien if price was right and the box looked vintage style.

That price is ridiculous......beyond ridiculous. Hope they sell 5 or 6 ...

I really don't care either way how much or on what people spend their money, after all, I am a collector myself who in the eyes of most people spend an extravagant amount of money on toys, but this GG trend does worry me a bit.
After all, if collectors are willing to spend 500 dollars on a piece of plastic with little to no paint apps or intricate manufacture, what will companies like Hot Toys or Sideshow believe collectors are willing to spend on very intricate, mixed media figures?
I understand the nostalgia value and rarity of an original toy from the 60's or 70's, but this doesn't really fit the bill.
Or maybe it's two very different things, I don't know.

I agree! Based on manufacturing comparisons of complexity and tooling, HT figures are worth the 220 or so each( to me). Paying 500 for a piece of not very complex or detailed plastic with little articulastion is a naked gouging grab at the "collector's market" by GG. I know some will pay by I think they greatly overestimated the demand for this

Plus GG is charging your state's sales tax on all their stuff now, around $30 for this Alien. That's some pricey plastic.

Got mine on preorder! I'm a BIGTIME Alien completist so yea, my collection is boss! Haha!

Anyone else get in on it?

I was looking through the Monsterpalooza photos on twiter and saw some from GG. Can anybody identify these two pieces with their up coming Alien or are they possibly something coming up from GG themselves?

The facehugger on the head on the left looks like a female bust I have seen lately.
There is actually one on ebay with a bid on it.
Reminds me of the palisades Facehugger on Kane bust... but I haven't compared it enough to see if it was based on that.

I think Monsterpalooza has work from a bunch of different artists and companies, but most of them are one-offs for the show.

Had no idea there was a video on it already especially since SDCC didn't even start yet?
I already ordered it but if I hadn't, I would have after seeing that video.
He's Massive and a Very Cool Green!
Odd that they say he has to absorb light to glow, so fresh out of the Box he won't glow??
Never heard that about glow in the dark products before?
