I know video games have gone mainstream in a HUGE way and are no longer considered juvenile male pursuits but I haven't seen the pendulum shifting with regard to collectibles. I see references to collecting figures on current shows like The Office as still pretty "loser-ish behavior" or as jokes on Conan O'Brien.

Do you have any specific examples that indicate otherwise?

I'd like to offer my own experience. A few years ago, I was working at a business office branch of a hospital. My immediate supervisor was a woman in her mid to late 40s. My desk area was decorated with a few comic statue and other comic related items. I can honestly say this woman I worked for really looked down on me because of my comic theme desk.

A year after I started working there, another guy started and he had Philly Eagles theme going on and this guy could do no wrong in her eyes. When the supervisor left, we both interviewed for her job and it was given to him. I was told by another supervisor in the next area that the former boss didn't recommend me because she didn't feel I was "professional" enough in her eyes. I asked if it was because of my comic items on the desk and while he wouldn't confirm it, he didn't deny it either.

Long story short, comics and comic items are still very much not held in a positive regard by most.

That's a cold hard fact. Despite perception that it's Chic to be Geek, the majority of people around us still look down on and ridicule all things geek.

IMO, Khev was just pointing out a stigma that follows this and similar hobbies. Whether you want to believe it or not...you might as well accept that it's there and it's not going to go away anytime soon.

Thankfully we have communities like Sideshow Freaks where we can connect with others who share a common interest and enjoy this hobby.

I didn't say that. I said if you display it in your house chances are you're probably giving off the vibe of someone's who's desperate or disrespectful. I didn't say you per se, and I was quite clear that it's a stigma that can be overcome, so I really don't see what your issue is.

*I* am not accusing you of anything. I'm talking about a stereotype that tends to be less than flattering, not unlike "crazy cat lady" or "sci-fi nerd." Do you ever see "self-assured badasses" in movies with art/figures of chicks in bikinis displayed in their rooms? No, that's pretty much reserved for teenagers and losers and it's because that's how society tends to generalize people who do such things.

Just like only "geeks" in movies like Live Free Die Hard or The Forty Year Old Virgin are seen with Sideshow sci-fi figures and whatnot. It's not condemnation to simply make the observation that that's the perception of society.
read back your original post. it's clear that it wasn't the society's perception per se that you shared in your post, it's your own perception as well. it's you who did the generalizing, hence i felt like correcting you. i just went about it in a naughty way.

if you collect action figures/statues based on any material, "respectable" or not, you're just going to score low with the ladies anyway. you'd be perceived as "losers" by default, like you said. having many muscle bound superhero statues around is not going to make you look any more manly in the lady's eye, and i fail to see how collecting sexy babes based on comic book is going to make you more appealing than collecting sexy babes based on original design. so the point is, if you want to talk about chicks repellents, they're all just as potent. dont need to look down upon this line as if it's any worse than the others.

Wrong, for two reasons. "Browsing for porn" is something guys do while hunched over their computer screens in secret. Displaying a statue on a shelf clearly is not. And the second reason you're off point with that is because, again, I'm not condemning you. I assume you've never read a single Sucker Punch thread? I'm actually a pretty big fan of the movie and currently have the BD PF on preorder. Did I have a chat with the missus about it, uh YEAH, but we keep going back and forth on whether or not it's appropriate for our house. I mean, we're like two of the 10 people who actually saw that movie. To everyone else BD just looks like some slutty chick along the lines of these Honey Trap gals.

So relax. We're all faced with the same decisions and have to come to terms with how far we want to "geek out" or look like 40 year old virgin losers with our collections vs. not caring because the collectibles are so damn cool or not caring because we make up for it in other ways. :)
you have a cool missus. you and her like the statue, that's all that matters. screw everyone else who cant appreciate a fine piece of as-s, i mean... fine piece of art.

Let's get back on topic and STAY on topic...

I'm liking the stylized artwork for these pieces more than the statues themselves. :D

looks like samurai jack style. i think GG should get rid of those artwork. just dont show any artwork/story to elaborate on these ladies. let us imagine them as how we each see them. these artwork is too limiting; already they ruined a potential cool backstory for katya by showcasing modern police cars. i like it better when she's in the wild west. and imagining derby be in a bladerunner universe is so much cooler than seeing her shooting thugs at some generic warehouse.

The art reminded me of the 60's movie poster art. Not some Cartoon Network cartoon.
