I know video games have gone mainstream in a HUGE way and are no longer considered juvenile male pursuits but I haven't seen the pendulum shifting with regard to collectibles. I see references to collecting figures on current shows like The Office as still pretty "loser-ish behavior" or as jokes on Conan O'Brien.
Do you have any specific examples that indicate otherwise?
I'd like to offer my own experience. A few years ago, I was working at a business office branch of a hospital. My immediate supervisor was a woman in her mid to late 40s. My desk area was decorated with a few comic statue and other comic related items. I can honestly say this woman I worked for really looked down on me because of my comic theme desk.
A year after I started working there, another guy started and he had Philly Eagles theme going on and this guy could do no wrong in her eyes. When the supervisor left, we both interviewed for her job and it was given to him. I was told by another supervisor in the next area that the former boss didn't recommend me because she didn't feel I was "professional" enough in her eyes. I asked if it was because of my comic items on the desk and while he wouldn't confirm it, he didn't deny it either.
Long story short, comics and comic items are still very much not held in a positive regard by most.
