Does the head retain the articulation at the head and neck with the TB sculpt?

For the most part yes. It's a tad less, but still there.

Does Rit dye stink as much as the color remover?

No. Just make sure you have your oven fan on when dying.

Doesn't TB Bilbo come with a backpack or something as well? What is its quality like?

The accessories are crap. His jacket is horrible as is his shirt-pants jumpsuit. The Sting he comes with looks like a fishing pole with a Pike hooked, and the scabbard is thicker than his arm, thus, unusable. The backpack is hard plastic. I suppose you could use the backpack, but if you have an extra Frodo one, it looks better and is more consistent with the Sideshow line. His storybook is just about the only salvageable accessory.

Thanks for the compliment. But it's extremely easy, much easier than Gimli, so Sideshow and ToyBiz deserve most of the credit for the great piece. Though Pix, being the downer he is (YOU *******! :lol), reminded me that Bilbo needs a walking staff. So I'd add a Donatello staff (TMNT) to the menu list. The figures are on $5 clearance just about everywhere and the staff is about the right height and already has the wood grooves. Just needs a dark brown wash to bring out the wooden features and a clear coat to keep it from smudging.

well i have a roto gimli i was able to bet for not much over retail so i'll at least have a stand in until i can get all the pieces. i'm hoping with maybe one of the hobbit cloaks and by standing in the back ground he won't look too out of place.

Gotta love Colin Baker. He had a hobbit-like quality about him. :lol

Here is my Bilbo. I haven't futz'd with him at all and he needs a new head paint but his clothes are all dyed. So I guess he is pretty much done. Sorry for the dark pic.

I'm actually going to use the backpack that came with the TB Bilbo. It's unique to him and helps separate him from the other hobbits. Plus I don't find that it clashes with the SS accessories, but compliments them. But like you said, everything else is garbage. I need to find him a walking stick now.

Not sure exactly what type of heating method nam used, but I dipped Bilbo in boiling water for about two minutes. The head popped right off with very little effort. All credit is due to thenammagazine for the idea behind this awesome custom, which is relatively inexpensive and very easy to do. Thanks, bro. :duff

I always use a blowdryer. I'm always paranoid about damaging something via the boiling method. As for the props, thanks a bunch bud, but it's really relatively easy and was inspired by all our efforts on Gimli. Marc (Pix) deserves more thanks though for guilting me into posting it. :lol

Hot water damages the figure?
For me, I've found it the best way to uniformly warm the plastic.

I've actually distorted the plastic once using a hairdryer, but whatever works for you. :duff

I don't recall every saying it did. I just don't like the potential of dropping it into boiling water and chasing it around the pot with tongs. I tried that method once with a Joe and he wound up looking like JigSaw. I just prefer the blowdryer because, to me, it's a more controlled environment and the purchase price of the customs I do now has near quadrupled from $20 Joes to $100+ figures.

Ah. I see. The "paranoid about damaging something" comment was confusing. I don't bring the water to a boil anyways so no need for tongs. That much heat isn't necessary.

I used to use a blowdryer because I was paranoid about damaging something, but now I use the "mug of water in the microwave" method and it's never failed me yet. The hair dryer is more work in my experience, and it takes longer.
