Re: So, has anyone else seen "Speed Racer"?

I can guarantee you, I will never see this movie in my whole lifetime.

:lecture Smart man.

And Christina Ricci looked awful. Her eyes were freakily huge. I was expecting her heart to light up and hear her say, "Elliot...!"

:monkey4

And the graphics are really not all that great. Cool to look at, sure... but certainly not photo-real (which I'm sure they weren't trying to achieve... at least I hope not, anyway).

Re: So, has anyone else seen "Speed Racer"?

By the way, the movie opened with a paltry $5.8 million Friday (on 3,606 screens) in third place... behind "What Happens In Vegas" (#1 was "Iron Man", of course).

It'll be lucky to make much more than $20 million in its opening weekend.

BOMB.

Re: So, has anyone else seen "Speed Racer"?

The previews are definitely colorful, and Susan Sarandon looks really good. I won't be watching this movie, though. It's not geared for my demographic, but glad that those who've watched it found it interesting and watchable. :monkey1

Re: So, has anyone else seen "Speed Racer"?

^^^^ting on this movie is the cool thing to do right now, and it's not unexpected, I always seem to be on the wrong side of popular critique. I enjoyed this film a ton.

This is a movie that is every fanboy's wet dream. It was made specifically for them. There's no added carrot in the form of new characters or distracting sub-plots to dangle in front of outsiders. Thusly, if you have no investment in the show at all, there is nothing for you here. Heck, my 5 year old son, arguably this film's target audience, fell asleep and called it "lame." Me? I had a grin a mile long every time the Mach 5 went airborne and I was treated to the "wha wha wha wha wha" sound effect.

The Wachowski's pulled one over on Warner Bros. and made a movie for the fans instead a film with broader appeal. And I wouldn't have it any other way. Mind you, I'm not some rabid fan, it's just a cartoon I watched with my cereal before Ninja Turtles came on before school every morning. But I loved it, and can't wait for the Blu-Ray.

Re: So, has anyone else seen "Speed Racer"?

I agree with you there. I think that because I watched it so often as a kid, that I an unable to really hate this movie. The race sequences, although sometimes too colorful, were very well done. But like I said before, the dialog is quite misplaced sometimes, and the first third of the scenes with Spritle made me clinch. Other than that, it was fairly enjoyable

We're very VERY sorry that we think this movie looks immature and silly, but hey, that's the beauty about opinions. Not everyone's the same as the other's. btw Who said whinning about it is the cool thing to do? Did I miss the memo on that? *shrugs*

I never liked the cartoon, so why in the H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks would I go for a live-action feature of it? And I didn't find the trailers entertaining or the 32% freshness ratio it got on rottentomatoes.com to my liking either.

btw I love how people get offended about movies that people just don't care to see. Did you have anything to do with the production process of the movie? If your answer is no, then who cares. :)

Just let us have our opinion and move on. You liked it, and that's great! Having said that, your opinion of this movie won't sway my decision to not see this movie.

Holy balls, dude. I don't think I'm the one getting offended here, I just thought I'd drop in and say I liked it. Didn't realize that wasn't allowed.

Re: So, has anyone else seen "Speed Racer"?

I was hoping the Wachowski bros (it's still ok to call them "bros", right?) would take an old cartoon - one that was never that good to begin with - and give us something extraordinary. I expected something on the level of the Matrix movies (Well, just the first one), but I left the theater exhausted and with a headache. It was one of those times where I was more interested in the preview trailers than the actual movie, which doesn't happen very often, especially in summer blockbuster season.

My biggest issue with the film is it's length; it's over 2 hours long! It would be a challenge for anybody young or not to sit through this film without squirming in their seats. It's overly long and unnecessarily so. I went in knowing full well how long the film was, but I thought that the running time would amount to something that was worth it, like well drawn and profoundly written characters or maybe some complex drama, but the characters were cardboard cut-outs and the drama would receive poor ratings on a crap tv show.

Don't get me wrong, I love anime and the old Mach GoGoGo was cool and all that (when I was a kid), but this movie just wasn't that great. As an example of modern, avant-garde image making, it's certainly unbeatable, redoubtable, but as a film it doesn't deliver. However, I will admit that some of the action scenes and long shots were very cool.

Is this really for kids? The kids in the auditorium I was seated in seemed bored out of their minds. one of them actually started playing with with his DS two thirds of the way through the movie (that didn't make anybody in the audience happier, and thankfully his mom told him to put it away soon enough).

The Wachowski's should get inspiration from a different anime next time, maybe something a bit more mature. The Akira remake would be great if they were involved...but they aren't.

Re: So, has anyone else seen "Speed Racer"?

I bet the Indiana Jones crew is glad they have that nice little cushion so they didn't have to deal with the heat from Iron Man. I don't know that Speed Racer was ever going to be a massive hit, but I'm sure it would've done better if Iron Man hadn't caught fire the way it did. That movie's an unstoppable beast right now.

I am not offended. It's just how your first paragraph came across. Like how could we not want to see this or how could we not find the concept of this film entertaining? I guess the whole line it's the "cool thing to female dog this movie" got the kind of response from me.

So, now that it's official we're not really that offended, then what would you rate this movie? True, I won't see it, but I still like to know what you would rate it. hehe

I may give it a shot on DVD. Who knows. I sadly will admit I saw Spy Kids 3D to see what all the fuss over the 3D effects was. Glad I did, because with the glasses it was quite enjoyable to see things come out at you in a theatre. I have experienced that form of 3D, but in the size or scale of a big theatre sized screen. But boy oh boy was the story and acting lacking in that film. hehe

Plus, I always liked the mother in that movie who played Antonio Banderaz's (sp?) wife.

Re: So, has anyone else seen "Speed Racer"?

I saw this last night on the IMAX and I loved it. Speed Racer was like watching a live action Anime. Loved the part when his team won the race and he jumped from the Mach 5 and stood there in the same pose from the cartoon. The aspect of it that made this film a kids movie was Chim Chim and Sprittle but I think they stole the film.
I laughed till I fell on the floor at the part when Chim Chim and Sprittle were going for a joy ride to Freebird.
Visually this move was fantastic, I would highly recommend seeing it. This film wasn't as edgy or adult as the Matrix. Speed Racer was corny, and I mean that in a good way.

I bet those who do a lot of weed would be in for a pleasant surprize while watching this movie.

I had 2 shots of Patron and a pomegranate margarita just before we went to the movie.

I think that's why I enjoyed the first 20 minutes... and was trying to figure out what I was watching by the end.

:lol Yeah, I could see how that could read the wrong way. But like I said in my second paragraph, it's definitely not for everybody.

As a film, in terms of plot/dialog/character development, etc, I would not rate it very high at all. But I thought the races were exciting, the style was extraordinary, and the nostalgia factor pushed this one over the top for me.

So, like I said before, if you have no investment in the show, there's nothing for you here. However, if you did watch the show as a kid, this movie was made for you. :duff

That's very odd... Pomegranates are the best fruits to consume that help aid against the potential chances of getting Alzheimer's.

It's protein for the brain!

I fully expected Spritle and Chim Chim to be the proverbial JarJar of the movie, thankfully, they were anything but. I loved all their scenes!

Well Christina Ricci was wearing a mini skirt and CFM boots, so that's a reason to go see the movie... :monkey3

I won't lie. I'll stay far far away from this at the theatres, but who knows, I may just give this a shot as a DVD rental. After all, during the week it's rent one get two. So it could be my free rental. :D
