Someone over at AICN is claiming that they're close to the production and that sometime this week, Chris Cooper will be announced as Sinestro.

A little older than I thought but he definitely has acting chops....

I'm not sold on it either but its nice to get some actual movement on this film. Principal filming is supposed to begin soon and we have no other confirmed cast members than Reynolds. What is strange is that DC/WB have both been saying how important this film is to keeping up with the Marvel machine and yet we have very little hype.

There is still a year and a half before it's released. Right now we're seeing a lot about Iron Man 2 but it's only 6 months away.

Don Cheadle was formally announced on Oct 14, 2008
Mickey Rourke was formally announced on Jan 7, 2009
Sam Rockwell was formally announced on Jan 7, 2009
Scarlett Johansson was formally announced on Feb 14, 2009

At the time of Johansson's signing the status of the film was:

Iron Man 2 still doesn’t have a shooting script and a start date has not yet been determined.

This is with Iron Man 2 having a May 2010 release date.

WB has said that The Green Lantern will have a Jun 17th 2011 release date after being moved from December 2010. The shooting window was supposed to begin in January 2010 to keep that Jun 17th 2011 release. Now Sinestro is NOT supposed to be the villain in this film according to rumored script treatments but Hal's mentor throughout with turning set up for a sequel. So you can do the math that Sinestro if the rumors are true is set to be Tony's Rhodey. Rhodey was casted over 1.5 years before release. With that in mind to keep the same schedule Sinestro should have been casted in December. Now that is compensating for the move of release. Say what you will but the production on TGL is behind the mark.

Also you have to forget that Howard was casted in Iron Man before Downey himself.

Yeah, I'm not liking that choice for Sinestro either. I could see him as Ganthet though.

Well, after Ledger's Joker performance I will never question/bash an actor/actress choice until I see him or her perform the role!

Well, I can't argue with that. I was totally against Heath originally, but he won me over with the first trailer.

Then again that was Christopher Nolan. So I'm not sure this rule always applies. But I'm willing to give him the chance.

I still think Hugo Weaving or Jeremey Irons (if he was a bit younger) would have been good.

Green Lantern Gets the Official Green Light

Visual effects supervisor Karen Goulekas (The Day After Tomorrow, Spider-Man) has announced on her Blog that Green Lantern got the official green light yesterday (Wednesday) and that filming will start in 10 weeks (sometime in March):

Wow! Been a long time since I posted! But today is a day worth posting about!

Green Lantern got the official green light today! And not a second too soon - only 10 weeks out from shooting!

While it's great news we are a go - now we have to actually get our prep done in 10 weeks!
DOH!

But we have an amazing crew - so we will make it happen!

In previous Blog posts, she has mentioned that the film will include over 1300 effects shots. To be directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, GoldenEye), Green Lantern will star Ryan Reynolds and is scheduled for a June 17, 2011 release.

Blake Lively has nabbed the female lead opposite Ryan Reynolds in Warner Bros.' "Green Lantern."

Lively will play Carol Ferris, who runs her father's aerospace company and hires cocky test pilot Hal Jordan (Reynolds), who later becomes the intergalactic policeman Green Lantern. In the comics, the romance became complicated when an alien race bestowed her the power of a crystal called the Star Sapphire.

The search for the Martin Campbell-directed film's leading lady was almost as intense as the one for its title star. Keri Russell and Jennifer Garner were reportedly among those in the mix for the role.

The role called for a slightly older actress but Lively, who stars in the CW's "Gossip Girl," impressed the studio and filmmakers with her audition. Warners was also impressed with her work in "The Town," its adaptation of the gritty Chuck Hogan novel directed by Ben Affleck now in post-production.

The casting process will next turn its eye to the roles of Dr. Hector Hammond, one of the key villains, and the alien known as Sinestro.

Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti are producing the big-budget sci-fi movie, which is scheduled to shoot in Louisiana in March with an eye towards a June 17, 2011 release.

The script was written by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, Michael Green, with Michael Goldenberg currently rewriting.

Lively is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.

Ugh. Out of all the rumored choices this was the one I didn't want....she must have auditioned the hell out of it. I tried to find a picture of her with brunette hair and this is the best I could do.

Well at least she has the body for a Star Sapphire but this news DOES bum me out. Carol is Hal's Lois, she bust his balls more than she does to Clark at times and I just don't see Lively being able to pull it off.

Was really surprised when I read that Blake Lively got the role, I would have thought that Eva Green would have been a no-brainer, especially since she worked with Martin in Casino Royale. Though I like Blake more than Jennifer Garner and Keri Russell for the role, can't see either of them as Star Sapphire. Maybe she really blew them away at auditions and had better chemistry with Ryan.

I'm willing to give them the benefit of doubt on this one, Campbell makes some really good movies.

Evan

People are quoting The Heath Ledger Equivalency where Nolan admitted that Ledger completely blew him away at auditions and he couldn't picture anyone else in the role. Considering that Lively was probably the darkest horse out of the whole bunch I have to believe its one of those cases....either that or Campbell got some.

HECTOR HAMMOND CAST?

Peter Sarsgaard is in negotiations to play the villain in "Green Lantern," Warner Bros.' big-budget, Martin Campbell-directed tentpole based on the DC Comics super hero.

Ryan Reynolds is starring as Hal Jordan, the test pilot who finds a downed spacecraft with a dying alien who passes him a powerful ring, introducing Jordan to a interstellar police force known as the Green Lanterns.

Sarsgaard will play Dr. Hector Hammond, the pathologist son of a senator who is seen as a disappointment in his father's eyes. He becomes infused with psychic powers when he discovers a meteor.

The character was created by John Broome and Gil Kane in the early 1960s.

Blake Lively has already cast as Reynolds' love interest, Carol Ferris.

The movie is prepping for a March start in New Orleans. Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti are producing.

Sarsgaard, who starred opposite Carey Mulligan in "An Education," recently wrapped "Knight and Day" with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. The actor, repped by CAA and Authentic Talent and Literary Management, is currently shooting the indie thriller "The Ledge" with Terrence Howard and Evan Rachel Wood.
