Access Hollywood talked briefly with Blake about being cast as Hal's love interest:

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

Blake Lively couldn’t be more excited to go from “Gossip Girl” to “Green Lantern.”

“Oh my gosh, it means the world!” she told Access Hollywood of her big-screen casting news on Tuesday night at the book release party for “Gossip Girl” fashion guru Eric Daman’s “You Know You Want It” in New York. “It’s such an exciting film to be a part of, wonderful cast, wonderful studio and it’s an amazing role so I’m really thrilled.”

Blake recently won the role of Carol Ferris – reportedly over stars including Jennifer Garner and Keri Russell – who is the love interest and boss of pilot-turned-superhero Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern, last week.

Ryan Reynolds is set to star in the title role of the film, scheduled for June 17, 2011. Peter Sarsgaard is reportedly in talks to play the film’s lead villain.

Whether Blake will stick with her trademark blonde locks is another story. In the DC Comics, Carol is a brunette. But the star is keeping her hair colors to herself, demurring to reply and making a funny face when asked by Access if she would go dark for the film.

She was more outgoing on the subject of Eric and his influence on “Gossip Girl’s” fierce fashion.

“He’s so terrific, I feel like he’s one of the biggest reasons ‘Gossip Girl’ is successful,” she said, recommending his new book. “I’m a little jealous he’s telling the world his secrets.”

EXCLUSIVE: 'Green Lantern' Director Says Mark Strong In Talks to Play Sinestro, Confirms Kilowog, More!

Posted 2 hrs ago by Rick Marshall in DC Comics, Hot Stuff, News

"Sherlock Holmes" actor Mark Strong is in talks to play Sinestro in the "Green Lantern" movie, according to director Martin Campbell.

Speaking with MTV News during the junket for "Edge of Darkness," his upcoming action thriller opening January 29, Campbell dismissed rumors that "Watchmen" actor Jackie Earle Haley was in talks for the role.

"No, that's completely wrong," said Campbell of the persistent rumor, which popped up again recently despite Haley denying any involvement with the "Green Lantern" movie. "In fact, we're in negotiations with Mark Strong to play Sinestro."

"He's not only a wonderful actor, but he looks like Sinestro," he added. "If you look up old pictures of Sinestro, he's very like him. The Jackie Earle Haley thing, somebody told me about it this morning; I had never heard it before in my life."

If negotiations pan out, Strong will have a role in not one but two much-anticipated comic book movies, as he also plays mobster Frank D'Amico in Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of John Romita Jr. and Mark Millar's "Kick-Ass." However, Campbell didn't stop there — he also offered up a list of characters from Green Lantern's universe making an appearance in the film.

Oh, and brace yourselves, folks — Kilowog is one of them.

"Well, Kilowag will be," said Campebll. "Tomar-Re is in it. Sinestro is in it. Abin Sur is in it. All the origin people. Carol [Ferris], of course, who will be played by Blake Lively. All the main characters are there, and it's a complex story. The origin story of Green Lantern is complex, probably one of the most complex, which makes it a challenge to get it right."

If Strong becomes Sinestro, he could join recently announced in-negotiations actor Peter Sarsgaard, who's in talks to play villain Hector Hammond.

In the comic books, Sinestro is a former Green Lantern who trains Hal Jordan (played by Ryan Reynolds), only to become one of Jordan's greatest enemies when he leaves the cosmic police force.

Horrible Manip but I like the choice, I can definitely see it.

YES!!! :banana:joy
Now this is the kind of Green Lantern news I've been looking forward to. Very curious how Kilowog will look as much as Hal's suit. I like the idea of Strong as Sinestro and Sarsgaard as Hammond. The only questionable move so far (imo) is Blake as Carol, but I've heard good things about her in Affleck's "The Town". Plus I have faith in Campbell.

Thank the Guardians! I had read the Jackie Earl Haley is a lock for Sinny and was disappointed. But maybe he can play Ch'p?

I know nothing about Green Lantern at all, can someone suggest a good novel or something to get me started, an origin maybe best, as I said I know nothing except he seems to be able to go into space.

Pick up John's "Secret Origins" and you'll get the basic gist of Hal's origins becoming a GL especially since rumor is that was the basis of the original screenplay.

Not a done deal yet...

'Green Lantern' director says cosmic film will have 'a Flash Gordon element'
January 16, 2010 | 1:43 pm

Director Martin Campbell, sitting in his room at the swanky Casa Del Mar Hotel in Santa Monica, was supposed to be talking about his new thriller "Edge of Darkness" but he went off topic for a moment to prove his earnest allegiance to his upcoming fan-boy franchise.

"In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight..." The New Zealand native recited the Green Lantern's oath with only a hint of a smile but no irony -- the last thing the director of "Casino Royale" wants to do is come off as eye-rolling tourist in the DC Comics universe.

In two months, Campbell and his star Ryan Reynolds will start filming "Green Lantern" in New Orleans. Talks are reportedly underway with Mark Strong to play the villain Sinestro and Campbell said fans of the emerald avenger will get all they hope for in the film.

"It's a departure for me, I've never done a super hero before," said Campbell, who does have masked-man experience with "The Legend of Zorro" and "The Mask of Zorro" in the 1990s.

"What I like about this hero and this story is it's all about will power," the director said. "It's also about fear and about courage. It's not just a spandex suit movie. He doesn't just put on the suit and fly off and face evil kryptonite and all that."

Campbell said he was intrigued by the intergalactic nature of the hero, who is essentially a cosmic cop reporting to the Guardians, the powerful masters of distant Oa.

"There is a Flash Gordon element to it, this is a superhero who goes to another planet and that's different than the rest," Campbell said. "That opens up a lot of interesting options."

Campbell said the casting "news" about Jackie Earl Haley (who is now part of the "Human Target" cast on Fox) taking on the role of Sinestro was "rubbish" but he declined comment on the more recent reports that Strong (the sinister heavy in "Sherlock Holmes") was the man for the job. "He's a very fine actor," Campbell said of Strong, suggesting more than a passing interest by the filmmaker. This week, sources at Warner Bros. said Strong is the circled choice but that his schedule is tricky.

An interesting change...

Emerald Dawn Comic Confirmed to be the Basis for the Green Lantern Movie!

Director Martin Campbell says the 80's miniseries, which showed a more flawed Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, looks to be the backdrop for one of 2011's biggest movies.

When the Green Lantern was first introduced, Hal Jordan was chosen because he was the most deserving man in the area. Emerald Dawn changed that. This mini-series that was released before the first issue of the Green Lantern series came out in 1990. It is a retelling and slight reworking of Hal Jordan's (the Silver Age Green Lantern) origin. The Hal in this book is definitely different from the Hal in the 1970s and 1980s. Readers had grown accustomed to him as a leader, one of the Guardians' finest. Emerald Dawn showed him as a fallible human (he hurts a few of his friends while driving drunk) and he is a little impulsive with his actions when he first gets his ring. But, by the end of the story, he has saved Oa from the threat of Legion, proving that he is a hero and Green Lantern material.

Martin Campbell spoke with Devin Faraci from CHUD.com and said that what people will like best about Hal Jordan is that he is "the hotshot military guy who is slightly _____*ed up. He screws up a bit. He may be a hotshot as a pilot, but he also has chinks in his armor, which is what makes him interesting. In fact if anybody should not be chosen as Green Lantern, it would have been Hal Jordan. That's the journey that film takes, about somebody who on the surface of it is the least likely candidate to become one of the greatest Green Lanterns."

According to Mr. Faraci Campbell, specifically called Emerald Dawn "the origin," which veers from the indifferent and strait laced Lantern who first splashed across DC Comics.

So the Showcase issue nor the Secret Origins is the basis now its Emerald Dawn...

Mike, you seem to be the go to guy for GL.

Based on this story, what can we expect from Blake's character?

Director Says: Green Lantern Won't Be A 'Cheesefest'; Cites Inpiration for the Film's Tone;

Martin Campbell has been making the rounds on interviews for his new film Edge of Darkness starring Mel Gibson. He has been giving us bits of information on next year's Green Lantern as well. In a recent interview with Sci Fi Wire, the filmmaker relayed his test for a superhero:

"I think the thing to do is keep a sense of reality about it. Any time we talk about it, we sit in meetings, we have a cheese meter. We talk about de-cheesing any scene. So it's quite funny. We've all sort of got a sort of cheese meter where that becomes our sort of yardstick in terms of keeping it, giving it some sense of reality."

"So often in these superhero movies, nobody seems to get hurt. I remember seeing Wolverine, and he picks people up and hurls them 100 yards into a brick wall. These people, apparently unhurt, sort of get up and continue to fight just as strongly as they did before. Well, there's something absurd about that, in my opinion."

Campbell was set to film a remake of The Birds originally done by Alfred Hitchcock but opted for Green Lantern instead. He also hinted that a trilogy could be in the works: "Well, it's like Sam Raimi on Spider-Man, isn't it?"

One of the trickiest parts of GL will be showing off the ability of his power ring: "Well, of course it's willpower drives the rings and forms the constructs via the ring." "I think he's the only superhero that does that."

It also appears that Peter Saarsgaard is not completely on board yet. "I think he's contracted," Campbell said. "I'm not sure if negotiations have been complete, but he's absolutely who we want."

In a recent interview with Collider.com, Campbell discusses the tone of the film -

“It will be much more in the tone of Iron Man. It’s got to be. Certainly not Batman Begins, which is a pretty dark movie. No, he’s the Hal Jordan character who’s the sort of shoot from the hip, irresponsible kind of cocky test pilot if you will. In fact, the character seems to be the least likely to be chosen as Green Lantern. Well, of course that’s the fun of it. So no, it’ll be much more like Iron Man. So it’ll have one foot in reality if you see what I mean.”

This may contain spoilers for those that don't follow or know much about the Green Lantern series:

More info from Campbell about both Sinestro and Carol Ferris/Star Sapphire's turn to the 'dark side':

"I think it will stick closely to the origin story, but we all know Sinestro, for an example, is a character who goes over to the dark side, and of course, Carol, played by Blake Lively, in later versions becomes a bad guy as well, I think people will be able to see forward to the characters that in the comic went on to [become bad guys] ... but people will be ahead of us on all that I think."

Mike, you seem to be the go to guy for GL. Based on this story, what can we expect from Blake's character?

Not much if they stick to the Emerald Dawn series. It doesn't sound their including Emerald Dawn II in total but they have to be making tweeks because Sinestro isn't included at all in the original Emerald Dawn only by sight as a passing GL and doesn't make his appearance until Emerald Dawn II.

In Emerald Dawn, Hal is a down and out pilot still haunted by the loss of his father which he had to witness at a young age, his father who flew for Ferris Aircrafts left a legacy that allowed Hal to get a job there but basically screw around. He is basically a drunk and a screw-up when we first meet him. He used to date Carol but that relationship has passed she is dating someone else and she spends most of the series just saying how Hal isn't her boyfriend anymore while still loving him in secret. Out of 6 issues she is in the first two for a couple of pages and then in one panel at his best friend's funeral, whom Hal accidentally kills while drunk driving, and then at the end for a couple of panels. Honestly if they followed the series completely in the two hour movie you'd have about 25 minutes of screen time total....maybe.

With the inclusion of Sinestro you are definitely including some of Emerald Dawn II which takes place when Hal is serving out his 90 day prison term for his DUI and the injuries resulting...and if you read Emerald Dawn II it takes place in the middle of issue 6 of the original Emerald Dawn which has even less Carol in it.

It will perfectly set up the fall of Sinestro, the aliens, the relationship with the Guardians, Hal's learning curve, his recklessness and even introduces a pre-Green Lantern Guy Gardner but virtually has no Carol.

Yeah, Sinestro is the famous fallen Lantern who falls from grace and becomes more of an Anti-Hero than a villain. He believe in totalitarian rule and enforcements with iron fists. It leads to his downfall. He receives his yellow ring originally from the Anti-Matter universe by taking the metals and creating the ring, lantern and Central Power Batteries from the weaponers of Qward. He blames Jordan for his removal from the Corps and wants to kill Jordan but isn't primarily a villain as most people know them.

Carol on the other hand is possessed by the Star Sapphire gem and its entity which controls her body. In the Silver Age, she battles Jordan as the entity wants to destroy the green light of will and sees Jordan as a catalyst because he is the Greatest of the Lanterns. It also chooses Carol because of Jordan's desire of her. The original storyline is much different than the current Star Sapphire who has a Corps, a base of operations and rings of their own.

Campbell has said before he wants a trilogy and envisions both Sinestro and the Star Sapphire as the villains for 2 and 3. The question is who will be the villain for 1. Originally in Emerald Dawn it would be Legion who kills Abin Sur and leads Jordan to get the ring. Although in modern continuity its Atrocitus who later becomes the leader of the Red Lantern Corps who kills Abin Sur and who Jordan has to fight.

Most sites are quoting Legion but mainly because that follows the path of Emerald Dawn I. Campbell hasn't said yet with what or who they'll be going by, not to mention if they include Emerald Dawn II we'll get the precursors to the Manhunters as well as actual Alien villains in the mix. Not to mention that Hammond was never in either of the films and his inclusion automatically indicates tweaking.

Should be a fantastic film series if they do it right.

Honestly no. It'd have to into another set of trilogies to make it make sense. I could see film 4 having the Coast City incident but the Parallax story has been retconn'd so many times since it happened it'd be difficult to get it together. Ironically it'd introduce Kyle Rayner and Emerald Dawn introduces Guy Gardner but none of what has been thrown around allows for John Stewart to be included which is the Lantern most children know. They could in theory go 4 Parallax, 5 Self Sacrifice and 6 Rebirth but it'd take a lot of cutting and creative writing to make it seem seamless.

It'd be too forced and seems just thrown together if done in a first trilogy because you'd have a lackluster redemption or an ending where he isn't redeemed.

Sounds like the only reason they are comparing it to Emerald Dawn is because Hal is "flawed". Hector Hammond was the big bad in the script I read many drafts ago.
