Ok, just got back.

Finally, finally, finally a giant monster movie where I actually cared about the characters.

The characters and story was the biggest surprise for me regarding this movie.

I was expecting for them to be secondary to the giant mayhem, they were not.

Loved all of the main characters, yes, even the 2 scientists. They were great actually.

I actually enjoyed the characters more than the battles, i'll explain below why.

Japanese chicks are cool, nuff said.

Things were not perfect though.

Many parts of battles should've been pulled back more, very hard to see what was going on, especially in the dark and rain, forget the ocean battle, couldn't see anything.

Having the final battle in the ocean was a bad idea, it ruined what should've been a jaw dropping scene with seeing a category 5 monster for the first time.

I get what they were trying to do, look everyone, Godzilla never had a battle as elaborate as this under water.

It failed.

The monster designs were mostly all poorly shown, like Irish said, the quick day battle in Sydney was best.

I did like the Otachi monster in HK having a triple split jaw like Nomak in Blade 2.

I also liked seeing the vampire character Rush from Blade 2 working for Hannibal.

I also like the scale of the Kaiju during the Tokyo battle.

That little girl was an amazing actress, great performance there.

That being said, the sound design was a little to loud and sharp during that scene.

Just because it's a big monster does it mean the sound needs to hurt your ears.

I don't mind heavy bass, but lower the highs a tad bit.

Speaking of the bass, the 2 big explosions at the end had the best bass I've ever heard in a theater.

Anyways, for part 2, my only recommendation would be to pull back on the action, more daylight battles and show off the monsters more and Godzilla will have to work very hard as the only giant monster in town.

The stuff inbetween the battles was just as good as the battles, in a giant monster movie!

BTW, there are enough battles in this movie, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Oh well, the budget can only go so far on the first movie.

It was a fun time, better than MOS.

But now I am pumped for Godzilla.

I agree with this review. It's like you synced with my mind in the Drift.

I really enjoyed the way that the sword deployed. It didn't leave you wondering where they stored the giant solid thing the rest of the time. There was a sense that they really worked out the mechanics of it, and that attention to detail was prevalent throughout the movie.

As has been said, this wasn't a stupid movie, and that heightened my enjoyment of it.

I'll forgive the sword thing, because it made for such an awesome moment.

I'm not even going to justify it, or come up with a fake in film reason for it. :lol It was just so badass that I wouldn't change a thing.

Plus...give more props to Charlie Day! Dude acted!

Charlie did an awesome job. I love the way he and Perlman interacted; same goes for his stuff with Stryf...err, Herman.

I guess he didn't have enough time to learn of its existence because of how he was deployed and the first time out Mako froze.

Yeah the first time he gets back in Gipsy, they have the whole losing yourself in a memory moment. Then the second time they are just deployed to go save everyone.

It is kind of weird that he was never briefed on any new systems installed, or new functionality. But i was so busy enjoying the film i didn't even think about that stuff.

One of the things I absolutely loved about the movie, is how real the world felt, and how you can get a sense of how people would live their lives in a situation like this happening...
Like "Bonestown", the Kaiju "looters", the TV shows and toys in the intro... how all the Mecha looks worn and beaten, things felt used! Like the original Star Wars
... loved the art direction, photography and cinematography of this movie! :clap!!

:exactly::exactly::exactly:

It's comparable to Star Wars. Fun, lighthearted, and campy. It's more like Star Wars then any other film to come out this year.

I would get this on my buttcheek.

Careful comparing this to Star Wars... :lecture

I think this has captivated my son's imagination in a comparable way to how I reacted to Star Wars as a kid. As we were driving home, he was talking about what he would put in the sequel and describing the different kinds of kaiju they could show and what weapons you could have in new jaegers. He was eager to explore more of the world that the film created for him. It's great when works of imagination like this spark the imagination and creativity of the kids in the audience.
