Caught a late night session with friends. And one of em walked out before the movie finished. lol
It was ok. Not great. I knew what I was getting into but I'm still unsure how I feel about it and I guess the faults lie in the execution of some ideas. My other friends also had mixed feelings about it.
I didn't have any problems with the main character. I thought he was done well, so was Riku. I liked there dynamic and how they worked in some japanese conservative cuteness to Riku's character.
I couldn't really get absorbed into the fights though there was enough to like. The end was ridiculous though. The sword was such a useful weapon. Why the hell didn't they give that thing a sharp melee weapon earlier. Why not build weapon bunkers complete with more advanced weaponry kinda like Evangelion? Because the Jeagers get there butts whipped, the solution for the governments of the world is to build a wall made out of cinder blocks? What the hell?
I liked Charlie Day as the scientist but that other guy was too much.
So yeah. Character work was mostly good, but some bits in the plot and the way they were handled could've been handled much better. This is not about suspension of belief. I can do that, and I can enjoy a fun movie, but I can't suspend stupidity.
I'll most likely watch it again on cheap ticket Tuesday. Maybe something will click... Maybe I'll finally catch it's drift
Some people are comparing this to Michael Bay Transformers which is just ridiculous. The reason they suck is because they refuse to build upon established transformer characters and fill the movie with pointless humans. The transformers are sentient and have personalities of their own. We don't need these unrelatable humans to help us relate, just make the transformers the centrepiece.
PR is a homage to the Kaiju movies of old and you can tell this movie has heart. It's worth seeing it for that alone imo.
As for how I would rate the movie - 6/10 for me.
