I actually don't think it's QUITE that much of an either/or. In fact, I'd say the "hate it" utterly people are in the minority. There's a lot of "Liked it but didn't like it as much as I'd hoped" people in the mix.

Yeah, I've not really seen anyone who hated it. I totally fall I to the liked it but not as much as I hoped camp.

Wow, very sorry for Guillermo that box office numbers are very bad:( For the weekend, it makes only $38,300,000... He is a great film maker but has a bad relationship with box-office:(

I think the title is fine. What else would you call it?

The reason the numbers aren't that great is not everyone likes movies about big robots fighting big lizards.

I don't buy it. Anyone who loves special effects, sci-fi, Star Wars, Matrix, LOTR etc, you think would want to see this. Another movie full of action, top notch CGI, sci fi, robots, monsters.

So where was that audience?

I feel the marketing was not very strong for this. Didn't market it properly. Did try to draw comparisons to other similar franchises.
And didn't have a real STAR either.

Although I will say this....why do people always want action scenes to be over quickly without any suspense?

They use the sword, Kaiju is dead, scene is over. Alright? Next scene, use the sword, Kaiju is dead again, scene over.

You play your best hand last for dramatic effect. If you blow your wad right out of the gate, then what do I have to look forward too?

That's why the movie has easy pitfalls. IF you think about things this easily, even as you're watching the movie, the movie has issues.
I thought the exact same thing. I was like hmmm...you are unloading everything you got, when really, you have got out your sword and starting chopping limbs and stabbing throats.
If executed properly, I wouldn't and shouldn't be thinking things like this as I'm watching it. ie. why are they building a brick wall and wasting their time doing, and wasting my time showing them do it.
Was it necessary?

I think this is why the whole premise is hard to get into for those of us who weren't thrilled with the movie.

I honestly think the trailers made it look a bit soulless. I think Man of Steel did a great job with this. Their trailers seemed sort of intimate and soulful, and then they layered on the action. I felt like Pacific Rim didn't give you any sense of the characters at all until right at the end of the campaign. Look, hindsight is 20/20. But I love action and sci-fi and robots. But if Del Toro's name hadn't been attached I would have passed this up like I did Battleship because I want more from a movie. People have so many choices, I really don't think SFX and sci-fi is enough any more to just fill the seats. I'm not sure the trailers sold me enough on the story element. Come to find out, that wasn't that strong... but it will still stronger than the trailers let on.

It was a good summer movie. FX were nice. Wife will prolly be watching SONS with me now. :lol

Nothing about it makes me want to see it again though.

Yeah, I enjoyed it in the moment and am glad I saw it on the big screen. Can't see watching it again, though.

Caught a late night session with friends. And one of em walked out before the movie finished. lol

It was ok. Not great. I knew what I was getting into but I'm still unsure how I feel about it and I guess the faults lie in the execution of some ideas. My other friends also had mixed feelings about it.

I couldn't really get absorbed into the fights though there was enough to like.

Yep yep yep and yep.

IT's a shame. I wanted to love this more or be excited, but it was a bit empty and soulless. For some reason, I don't care how cool the fights were...something was off and missing. I don't care how good some of the actors and relationships were...it still was missing something.

I almost feel no emotion at all towards this movie. And that sucks.
But I see I'm not alone. Seems a lot of us when in and liked it, but at the same time, could not get involved, it was not exciting our emotions or senses, and no desire to see it again. Like it's just a fading memory and time to move on. Oh well lol

Again, I'll get it on Blu Ray and add to the collection.

Well, if I understand correct what you're saying then let's have a look at Terminator 2 movie which T-1000 could melt and terminated, why T-800 don't know how to destroy it:)?

I dig Battleship for what it is. I expected it to be pretty damn cheesy which it was. Maybe that's why I enjoy it (well, Rihanna, Brooklyn Decker, and the USS Missouri don't hurt :lol). It was what it was. I did expect more from PR. I loved the panel at comic-con last year and enjoyed the way they marketed it. No star didn't help it but I figured Del Toro would deliver a solid story with the action/designs we did get. Sadly, the story isn't much to write home about until the last 45 mins or so. About when the Asian girl gets to pilot/awesome scientist goes looking for the brain. The only thing that had emotion before that was the brother issue, and I only cared about that because if something happened to my sister I'd be devastated. I'm glad people are loving this but for me I totally understand why this isn't doing anything at the BO.

Huh? Not sure I understand what you're getting at.

But are we really going to compare this movie to T2?? LOL
One of the best action sequels of all time? lol
