Yeah, I knew this was going to be one to watch on the biggest screen available, which, in my case, is an XD screen, but reading about all of the work that went into the 3D conversion, I'm very excited to see how it's turned out. I really hope this movie does well, and I hope that WB lets Del Toro make Justice League Dark.

For those still skeptical about the post-converted 3D, the following are del Toro's recent quotes regarding the 3D version. And judging by some of the other 3D screening responses I have read, it seems the 3D is really done well.

"For action, adventure and genre cinema, I'm now a converted fan of 3D. I asked the studio (Legendary Pictures) for the complete control of the 3D. I asked them for 40 weeks or so to get the 3D conversion, it usually takes just 8 to 12 weeks, and they agreed. As I'm a complete control freak, we achieved a 3D conversion that I think people will be very happy with it. It's now my favorite format for the vision of this movie, but I don't think 3D is for every film. If you can watch Pacific Rim in 3D, make sure to watch it that way."

And his quotes from last year.

“What happened was, in the weeks and months following Comic-Con, what I asked from the studio was to agree to four points that I wanted to do. The more the ILM shots arrived, the more I realized that there were only a few shots that would miniaturize. I asked the studio, number one, that we would not hyper-stereo-lize the thing. That we would not force 3D on the beauty shots. That we would keep the giant dimensions. They agreed.”

“Number two, they agreed to something very unusual. Normally a conversion takes a few weeks. I asked to start it immediately so we could take the full 40 weeks to do the conversion. As an example, Titanic took about 50 weeks to convert. The final thing that I asked that they agreed to, which was amazing, was that I asked them to give me an extra budget, which is considerable, to actually have ILM composite the shots that are CG native 3D. We’re not giving elements. ILM is giving the composite in 3D from the get-go. That’s a huge, huge element. Now I’m going to be involved in supervising it. What can I tell you? I changed my mind."

Yup, sounds like a Jurassic Park quality conversion was done.

The conversion looks Avengers/Jurassic Park/Cap Shield throw good in the Imax trailer though.

:rotfl
3D Avengers looked terrible. You couldn't tell what the **** was going on and it caused the movie to be really dark. At least in my theater.

Does sound like the 3D is going to be very well-done for Pacific Rim though.

I love Guillermo Del Toro so much. He seems like such an amazing person.
I seriously wish he made more movies and faster :lol the guy is such an amazing artist.

Thats kind of a conflicting statement. If he didn't invest himself into his work as he did by investing his time and energy and just churned crap out at that pace, he'd be just like everyone else. :dunno

Del Toro and Robert Rodriguez are actually well known for making good movies cheap and fast.
Its one of the reasons they talk studios into doing some of their odd movies they wouldnt greenlight for the typical director.

Totally disagree. Hes very capable and may not waste budget like some do, but hes far from what I would call "cheap". This is the whole reason they pulled at the Mountains of Madness out from under him, because he refused any budget under 150 mil. And he has never done principal shooting quick, I think 6 months + is his norm, considering Avengers was shot in 5 months, it doesn't look to me like GDT rushes through anything. :dunno

Ive seen it mentioned several times it was the only reason Hellboy & HB2 were green lit.

Cant really compare his past work to a $220mil+ budget movie. Sounds like they may have had a couple more people on the set to help out.

Pacific Rim's budget is 180 mil and they're not paying for RDJ and several other actors making 5 to 10 mil each I'd say thats just more piss poor reasoning. He obviously didn't rush the film just to get it out, and honestly, that just doesn't seem his style. :dunno

I don't see anything cheap in his work regardless of his budget, but hey thats just me. :dunno

Im kind of speaking to his past. Not where he's gotten to.
Blade 2: $45mil
Hellboy: $66mil
Hellboy 2: $85mil
Pans Labyrinth: $16mil

good point about RDJ... :monkey1

I see what you mean, but to me its just the opposite. I am beyond amazed with what he did with each of those movies (except Pans Labyrinth, never heard of that). Despite the budget, you don't watch this and think wow what a low budget fest, which is when someone says cheap is what I think of.

yeah that was my point.
Studios have been quoted in the past about how much they love him cause of how much he accomplishes working with a cheap budget. "Cheap" referring to the amount of money he has to work with. Not the overall feel of the result.

Oh gotcha, someone says cheap, I think Uwe Boll quality. :lol

Thats weird, is it really old, cause it doesn't even sound familiar, but I'll definitely check it out.

You've never seen Pans Labyrinth? If you're a Del Toro fan you should see it, it's his best movie, it won him an oscar for best foreign film, which the film is spanish by the way, it takes place during the spanish civil war I believe.

Here's a trailer, ignore the tacked on narration, this is the american trailer that didn't have any dialog in it because they didn't want to market it as a foreign film.

I'd say yes... but be aware it's loud... monsters are a bit scary but since the robots are there, I think it makes it OK as they take care of them... It's definitely more kiddie friendly than any of the Nolan Bats or the new Supes... I'd say probably on par to Thor.

Thanks! Of course I'll preview it myself before taking her. Just needed a heads up.

My little niece bugs me daily to see the trailer online. She loves her robots. :D
