Come on the clues were there all along, after all he was headmaster.

"I love my dead, gay, wizard."

I just don't really see the point in coming out (pardon the pun) with this now. There were never any hints in any book that would make me think he was gay. His love life was never talked about because he was too busy with being the greatest wizard of his age (the man lived for his work).

It doesn't really affect how I feel about this story but I still don't get the point of saying it. Are we going to learn that McGonagal is a ***** too?

I think the point was to get as many of the books before as many eager, young minds as possible, even the hoomschooled fundmentalist kids -- esp. homeschooled fundamentalist kids. Then paint a character that everyone loves. Get everyone really invested in them. In each book show them wrongly prosecuted by society more and more -- show them getting fired, being demonized by the popular kids and the press. Finally kill the character off in a moving sacrifice and reveal to all the people who've grown to love him -- many of them who never would have cared for a gay character (or allowed to know a gay character by their parents) -- that he's gay.

She says the books are a "prolonged argument for tolerance" after all.

If she wrote it in book one it never would have sold like it did in America. Not even close. In Texas? In Utah? Are you kidding me? And if she revealed it in books 2 - 7 there would have also been a backlash and a prejudice would be built up. Instead it seems like she waited til the last stop on her US tour to let him out of the closet.

It's very sad that you make many excellent points here

And that was exactly my point. There was just no point in it. I have to wonder if she has a gay friend or something who mentioned "ou had no gay characters" or something. It just makes no sense to come out and say this all all this time later. Most fans will just file this under "Who cares".

It could just be a case of her trying to be PC after getting a letter or hearing from a gay friend. Who know, but it just makes little sense.

You make interesting points, but these are still fictional characters and not real people. It's not like someone who dislikes gay people because they are gay is suddenly going to say "Wow, because of this fictional character I now see the light that gays and their lifestyle are ok with me". It's not like interacting with a real person who you form a friendship with and then later find out they are gay. I don't think this "outting" or Dumbledore does anything. I think it's JK just trying to be PC.

I dunno, I got the impression from the article that she had that in mind all along (or at least throughout book 7) as part of Dumbledore's character, and the question never came up. But when asked the question she was asked she responded with the best answer.

I don't believe that at all... every kid in america still would have wanted one. They would have sold just fine here.

A good author creates a backstory for every character before they begin writing a story. Even if they never use that material it still informs the character and their actions. I'm sure re-reading the books, especially 7, there will be plenty of clues to this. It isn't something she came up with after the fact just to shock or be "PC." In a world with so many well rounded characters there are bound to be all types, it stands to reason that one or two of the HP characters would be gay. Sirius never married, did he...?

He was in Azkaban most of his adult life though

It's kind of stupid, I mean, there really isn't a purpose to have to have him gay, when you think of Dumbledore it more seems like he's a monk or just someone where sexuality isn't of any importance. Like some kind of hermit. But I guess with all of the more mature and realistic elements that have been added into the story it would make a little bit of sense to bring up that issue.

Excellent points Dave, I agree completely. And DarthViper, I think the reason why Dumbledore is as you described him is because of his orientation and things hinted at in the book because of that. I hope that's sufficiently vague without being incomprehensible.

Please point me to any book references that point to his solidarity resulting from his sexuality

We all know he had a close friendship with Grindlewald but it's hinted that's because he was the closest thing he had to an equal while holed up taking care of his sister. There are never any hints or anything about them having 'feelings' for one another.

I'm not going by what is in the books, but rather what Rowling said in the article above.

Additionally as you say, it is hinted that its because he has found an equal, however when looking at it in light of this new revelation is makes equal sense, and in some ways more sense. In a way it is the missing piece of the puzzle no one realized was missing.
