So I've got this Medicom TDK Original Costume sitting on my shelf that I want to replace with the Hot Toys version. My girlfriend has been very supportive of my new hobby, and really appreciates them for what they are - but even she would have a hard time coming to terms with how I am now compelled to shell out between 300-400 dollars to buy a figure that, in her mind, I already have.

Here's the thing, I haven't told her about my lust for this figure. Now I've lied to my mum about how much these things cost, but I could never lie to my girlfriend about it (she'd know anyway). So buying this figure is going to take a lot of schmoozing, tact and strategy!

It got me wondering how many of you have ever lied about how much you spend on your hobby - either to friends, family or your better half - or whether you have had to engage in a bit of cunning and creative problem-solving to get hold of a figure you just had to have.

Go on, confess! I know I can't be alone here....

nobody should be asking how much they cost in the first place. tell them to mind their own business. i don't go to people's homes and ask what everything they own costs. it's ____ing rude.

never lied and probably never will. Why do you have to justify to anyone how you use your money?

Well in my case it's our money - we consult each other on all our purchasing decisions. Except our tax return and Christmas bonus, which are for 'indulgences' - but I don't know if I can wait that long!

As for my mum, she'd just shelled out for a term's school fees for my oldest daughter and a week later I've got three new figures on the shelf. In this context I couldn't bring myself to tell her their true cost...

unfortunately I lie to me mum here and there about how much I spend. she thinks I only spend maybe over a hundred on these here and there. I usually save about a hundred from money I "take out for the week for food" while I'm at college, but really just save it then take out what else I need for the rest of a figure from my bank. So my mom only sees the bits I take out from the bank. she'd kill me if she knew I spent $150-$200 on figures :lol

I understand where you're coming from to be honest, especially with the kind of money I'm shelling out for a customised piece (in the making).
My mother is aware of it, but she agreed to not tell the rest of the family. I can just imagine the type of looks I would be receiving if they knew what I'm spending. lol

if its not your money, then yes, you should tell them what you are spending on. I think a honest discussion with your better half is the proper thing to do. And speaking from experience, patience generally pays off in this hobby. (meaning you will get a TDK bat at a some what reasonable price.)

I do lie about how much they cost, but people tend to look at me with an incredulous face expression like " yeah, right like I could believe that", so yeah people know how much they cost because the figures look expensive. haha. It's like I'm lying to myself.

agreed! I my other half knows how much I spend on these guys and she supports it b/c its a hobby of mine and she spends money on scrapbooks so we have an understanding.

and I believe patience is best. I've seen on eBay many times where starting bid is like $200 and only 1 person bids on it, and for the OC Bats, that's a freakin' steal! so like Jack Sparrow says, "wait for the opportune moment, mate"

I kinda understand why you would have to lie to your mom and g/f. I would feel kind of guilty if my mom is helping me with my expenses and I'm out and about buying figs, but that's just me.

In regards to my situation, I live with my g/f. We recently purchase a home together but we do not have a joint account. As long as the bills are paid on time I do not see a need for me to lie to her about my spending.

you guys obviously are all still young and unmarried
When you are married and your money is hers too and is suppose to be used wisely especially with a kid coming you lie LIE L I E :rotfl:rotfl

:borg:

well I treat her well too so hope she wont bring this up ... lately I am pushing the limit with the MIllenium Falcon but I guess I have been good :p Got an iPhone 4 as well but of cause got her one too ;)

I'm completely honest about it and for the most part my significant other and my family think of it as any other hobby. When they ask about cost, I skirt around the exact numbers but I do tell them that some day in the far future I'll sell it all for my (potential) kid's college fund or whatever. That usually keeps them off my back.

So no, I don't lie about it.

my wife is cool with my statue and model kit collecting...im always honest when she asks
and shes cool with it as long as it doesnt cut into our priorities mortgage car payments food etc lol
