A lot of people tell me about this show being good. Even my friend's teenage kids dressed up like the characters at SDCC. Maybe I'll watch it someday.

There was also one in Book 1 and all we saw was Tyrion getting hit and that was the extent of the battle. Almost the whole point of the book series is that it's the politics and personalities that are more important in empire building, rather than the battles. It's the backstabbing and petty murders that are far more interesting.

The whole story definitely was interesting, which is why the who series lasted and it just didn't feel "finished" to be since a big battle was lacking. But I guess that's just due to me being accustomed to every king-genre movie ending with some sort of epic battle. Feels just as good watching the second time around and actually knowing everything that's going on. And the family chart I found was pretty helpful too:lol

Yes, the battles are generally treated as off screen occurrances, with the exception of some of the key smaller conflicts. I'm thinking about some of the stuff that happens with Theon and the Boltons, but those are small battles.

I was a little disappointed that we didn't see Tyrion's fight in the first season, only because it added to the scene with his father later when he asks him to take his place as the Hand. New found respect, and all that. It still wasn't an epic battle though - the book focused just on Tyrion's personal fight in it.

In the second season we have an epic fight that involves key scenes for Tyrion again, as well as Davos and Joffrey. Since that battle is not just a plot side point but what the entire season will be leading up to, I'm not sure they can avoid giving us the full treatement.

Agreed. To me it's like a modern version of Shakespeare.

Whoever has read Dance with Dragons, how did you find it? Spoiler-free please, just your opinions...
I just finished the Feast for Crows and I found it quite moderate, especially after the three epics that preceded it. It was a bit boring and lackluster at times.

It took me awhile to get into it, probably about a third of the way. Since it goes back in time to around the beginning fo Feast and tells the stories of the other folks that were left out of Feast, it is a bit unusual. But at about the half way mark things really started to pick up steam, and by 60% or so he looped back into the end events of Feast. I've still got about 20% to go, but I'm really enjoying it now.

Dance With Dragons has characters that did not primarily appear in Feast for Crows (specifically Tyrion, Jon, Bran, and Daenerys... among others). Most of the book covers events that happen simultaneously to Feast of Crows and then the last few hundred pages move the story along. I found Dance with Dragons a marked improvement over the events in Feast for Crows, but that's just because I'm a big Tyrion fan. Also there are some shocking things that take place-- You'll definitely want to pick it up before a spoiler/spoilers is/are revealed.

Hope that helps.

Wait until you get to the end... :horror :wave

I thought DwD was also a little lacking. I think it comes through in the writing that by the end he just wanted it done.

Ah right, I remember reading that and thinking - "how are they going to pull this off on a TV budget?". But there's stuff in the 3rd book that's even more ambitious - battlewise.

There are some good 'OMG' moments in DwD but I found that overall, it dragged a lot. At certain points, I really had to struggle to get through it.

Just finished ADWD and it is a lot of sizzle and very little steak. 1000 pages and very little plot progression. It is very much like AFFC - long and boring. I know this is part of a seven book series, but when you wait 6 years for ADWD (10 years total including AFFC) and read almost 2000 pages, you expect some big moments and a significant amount of plot progression and all we get is established characters going around in circles and new characters get introduced, GRRM spend several chapters on them and then they die. Overall very disappointed with Books 4 and 5. I am beginning to wonder if GRRM hasn't made this series "jump the shark" with some of the elements/characters introduced in ADWD. :(

Well l finshed watching the series first season on the computer over a few days. l really liked Sean Bean in it, that is the only reason l decided to watch it. l really didn't like any of the characters besides him for the most part. The only other character l liked was the little guy, l like him in another movie. Other then that l didn't find the show had lots of suspense, or deep drama. SPOILER. Since Bean is gone l don't think l will continue to watch the show, l was shocked when they got rid of him (l know he dies in the book), but for me the other characters just don't intrigue me enough to keep watching the next season without him.

I was seriously surprised when he died because I expected his character to be around the entire length of the series.

That's what l thought. Since that isn't the case l kind of feel like l just wasted 10 hours of my life watching this show over the last 3 nights because now l probably wont watch the next season. Without Bean the other characters just don't interest me enough to keep watching them.

It's still an intriguing show, so I'll keep watching. Maybe I'll avoid the books since I haven't heard many positive things about them.
