haha. I removed my spoiler! :) But yeah.. if you are that early into the book, just keep reading. Eventually, they do go over the 2nd rebellion a bit. You find out more in each book about allll of that stuff. If you have a question though, always safer to ask on here where we can try to give it to you spoiler free. Because if you look up stuff on the wiki's (as i did) you are gonna be spoiled REAL quick.. lol.

Ned Stark is a great character. But yes, he is not a central one when all is said and done. He's just one of MANY. Each book introduces another dozen or more characters probably. It's nice though, because that way people can die, and it can upset you, and people can live, or disappear, and come back, and it shocks you. It's a very rich universe, and very rewarding if you read all the books. I was very shocked to realize that Ned wasn't the main character for all the series. I totally though he was before I'd read the books. But the more I watched the show/read the books, the less I cared about him being the focus.

I've gotta say, my fav characters are Tyrion, Brienne (book 2+) and the direwolves, Jorah Mormont, Ser Barristan, etc. Of those, only Tyrion is really considered a HUGE player in the first book, but I still really love all the little characters. And it's nice, because some of those little characters become very BIG characters later on.

I watched the first season over the last couple weeks and now I am part way into the first book. I loved the show and I'm really enjoying the book. It's been too long since I read a good book. :yess:

Picked up my copy of Dance with Dragons on holiday when it was released on Tuesday..... loving it!

Same. Though it's been a while since I last read AFFC and even longer since I read A Storm of Swords which is the true predecessor to Dance , so I'm going to have to read some summaries on Wikipedia.

I really wish I was going to Comic Con this week just so I could see the Game of Thrones panel. Even with Disney pulling Marvel Studios from the SDCC for their own con, D-23, stuff like the GoT panel as well as the Amazing Spider-Man, Doctor Who and Fringe panels really make up for it. And Spielberg is going to be there for the first time ever!

Nice. I was considering that one or Eddard Stark's Ice. Thoughts? Worth the price?

Picked it up for $240. Very similar to United Cutlery quality, even the outer packaging looks the same. To me it's a bit over priced seeing that most UC LOTR swords can be found now at around $150-$180. I'd say that this is about $40 over priced. The ripple design on the blade is very very well done and looks really unique and cool...so IMO that justifies a $200 price tag.

These are in fact different than what is seen on the HBO series, however it is fact that these swords are 'canon' and GRRM himself has been involved in the design and approval of all Valyrian steel products. He has said that the HBO series is its own universe and a lot of the design there is up to the producers of the show and not really GRRM. It comes with a COA that is hand signed by GRRM as well.

I was going to pick up Ice but I think I may pass because they could not make Ice as long as they wanted to in order to keep this in their desired price range. The blade on Ice is essentially the same length of Longclaw but the grip is longer.

Awesome review, thanks. I think I'll maybe go the Longclaw route-- especially as Ice
doesn't survive and if they make more I'd also love to pick up Brienne's Oathkeeper.
I like the COA signed by Martin as well.

Finally got around to watching this show Friday night since I was stuck indoors and finished it last night. Great show but it sucks that I have to wait until season 2 to finally start seeing battles

I am worried they will not show much, like other HBO shows.

Well, the books don't center on big battles too much. There's a key battle in the second book/season that they'll have to show us, and would be very disappointing if they didn't, but after that it's quite awhile before any more large scale showdowns occur.

I hope they can pull out all the stops. I foresee them doing something where they doing after battle scenes or heavily edited small battle scenes to make them look much larger than they really are.

There was also one in Book 1 and all we saw was Tyrion getting hit and that was the extent of the battle. Almost the whole point of the book series is that it's the politics and personalities that are more important in empire building, rather than the battles. It's the backstabbing and petty murders that are far more interesting.
