I tore through the first two and just cracked open the third today-- The problem is that while I have the fourth sitting--- waiting for me-- there's currently no fifth so I'm going to go into withdrawal once I reach the end of what I've got-- probably in a week.

Pick up book 5 on tuesday at your local bookstore.

"Released July 12th..." :duff Just looked it up-- you made my summer. Thanks.

But then I read a bit further, A Dance With Dragons is the fifth of seven books... :monkey2:monkey2:monkey2

Looks like it's going to be again a summer with a cliffhanger.

Remember the next one's out on Tuesday!!

Edit: oops too late! Enjoy the wait, i find it exciting looking forward to the release of the next book. Only it takes Martin a bit longer than most writers!!

The problem is that I'm reading all four one right after another-- I'm going to have the shakes and go into withdrawal in a couple of weeks... :horror:slap:rotfl

Looking forward to it although will have to wait a bit for the paperback to come out to match the others in the series.

Also hoping a release date for the Blu gets announced shortly since i havent been able to catch it yet.

Part of me wants to get the Audible books and the other wait for the show. . . .

I read read book 1 and I'm audibling Book 2 right now. Ray Dotrice is the performer and he's great, except every character sounds like a 60 year old. Which is cool for the Maesters, but most of the other characters are still in their teens - it's a bit off putting.

I'm going to start the first book this week. :)

I have some friends that are trying to get me into audio books...I just never think of them when I am at the book store. I should give them a try though at some point. Would be nice to listen to them in evening.

I could never get into that (audio)-- I prefer turning the pages and having the story come alive within me. You'll love the first book and you'll probably jump right into number two. Love to hear your thoughts on it.

I'm the same way...I like physically reading...and then I can put to good use all those voices in my head! :lol

I'm looking forward to starting this...gonna take it with me to work today in case I have a little down time.

I have been spending the last few evenings on my porch with the ipod listening to the audiobook of GoT. I have been really enjoying them (even if he does all the voices like an old man :lol)

I've been reading book three while sitting at the pool... only taking a time-out ocassionally to play with the little ones. It's good summer reading.

I always thought audiobooks were for idiots who couldn't read. But someone recommended the Harry Potter audios and after that I was hooked. With a good performer it adds a whole layer to the "reading" experience. And for a long commute it can't be beat.

I understand how that could be enjoyable with a long commute-- I loved listening to the BBC radio version of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy oh so long ago and I must have worn out my records (you youngens' ask some grizzled folks bout those) for the first two SW movies...

I read a few book reviews today for Dragons(made sure i missed any spoilers) and they were all pretty much praise worthy, sounds excellent.

Can someone explain to me the significance of Theon Greyjoy in book 1? Im not exactly sure who or what his purpose is within the Stark clan.

Theon Greyjoy.

Ok. I'll try to make it brief.

So a little history first. Ned and Robert fought in the rebellion that brought down the Targaryens a long time before. I'm sure you know that already. There was another rebellion, while Robert was King. It involved the Greyjoys. They have the sigil of the squid/kraken thing, and they are based off of the Iron Islands which are just to the left of the Eyrie and the Twins, North West of Kings Landing, and South West of Winterfell. Robert came and met Ned, and they kicked their butts into submission. It was a very brutal fight, and afterwards, Robert let them stay in power there, but punished them a lot and destroyed a lot of their weapons/ships/etc. But just as they were back then, they are still a very sea-based and naval based power in Westeros.

Part of the punishment of the Greyjoys was that they were to give up Theon, who was the son of the main king/leader, Balon Greyjoy. Robert made him a ward of Ned Stark at Winterfell. As a ward, he actually had a really good life. He was treated like a part of the family, and even treated in a lot of ways better than Jon Snow was because of his bastard situation. But regardless, he never forgot that he wasn't a Stark, and they never forgot that he was a Greyjoy.

As far as Season 1 goes, he is a ward of House Stark, and he is someone who is pretty close to Robb and Jon. More so Robb.

That's as far as you can really explain for Season 1.

Beyond that? He becomes a very important, and very.. controversial.. player in things.

Keep reading! Theon and the Greyjoys are not a big part of season 1. They become pivotal in the other books, and serious players!

I'm about 70 pages into Dance With Dragons so far. It's amazing. I'm so glad I didn't wait the 11 years some people waited to read these characters stories again. It would have killed me! But at least now I only have two more books to wait for when I finish this! Anyone else reading it?

Theon joins his family, who don't like him. To gain their approval, he tries to take Winterfell. He succeeds, and gets a lot of people killed. He also convinces everyone he's killed Bran and Rickon Stark, and skins two kids and burns their bodies to use as evidence that he has done so. My hatred for Theon is second only to my hatred for the Frey's, who are also a HORRIBLE family, who do some of the most screwed up crap you could possibly imagine to the Starks.

Keep reading! Theon and the Greyjoys are not a big part of season 1. They become pivotal in the other books, and serious players!

Thanks Husker! that clears things up for me! I had no idea about the Baratheon/Greyjoy war. Is that explained in Book 1? Im only about 150 pages in so far.

I didnt dare read the spoiler, although it is definitely tempting me! :lol

At first, I thought of Ned Stark to be the focal point of these stories mainly because of the casting of Bean, but as things pan out you can definitely see that he is but a small part of it and the people whom you didnt think were going to be significant get pushed into the front.
