You still have to transfer the title. And how did he leave with the van if the guy kept the plates? Something sure isn't right with all this.

Yeah the guy making bombs was real concerned about keeping his registraton sticker up to date....

You mean to tell me you guys have never bought a 100-300 dollar barely running junker and never registered it? You have lived sheltered lives. There are places in America believe it or not where nobody gives a **** about registration/plates/tags/sticker aka taxation. It gets you to work or it doesn't.

It's that kind of being out of touch with America that makes our politicians such ****ty leaders.

Even with all of our speculation to the contrary, they just couldn't help but be the ones. That's no way to show gratitude for us not automatically suspecting them.

I understand now. The registered owner is not the same as the Pakistani man who bought the vehicle from him, and who is the man they now have in custody.

Just trying to keep things clear. I think they revised it between when I copied that quote, and now. The same line now reads:

Officials say the SUV's registered owner, whose name has not been released, was not considered a suspect in the bomb scare

:dunno

WTF is that supposed to mean?

MSN:Faisal Shahzad was arrested at 11:45 p.m. Monday night by Customs and Border Protection agents as he attempted to board an Emirates airlines flight to Dubai at New York's JFK airport, Holder and other officials said.

Shahzad, a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Pakistan, was accused of driving a car bomb into Times Square, authorities said. He will appear in Manhattan Federal Court later on Tuesday.

Wadda douche! :FREAK::moon

They need to take him out to the desert, put him in his suv, get a pro to rig working explosives to it, and blow his ass up.

Well, where I'm from, it's illegal to do this, so it's not living a sheltered life, it's obeying the law. I can't buy plates for the car without a registration. I don't think it said anything about the guy who sold the van being poor. If the guy selling the van was breaking the law, then he should be penalized for it the same as anyone else who gets caught. I just find it strange that not only did he not do any paperwork, but he gives the plates to a junk yard. Here, you're supposed to turn the old ones in so crimes can't be commited with them.

I agree that the terrorist isn't going to worry about such things, but the man selling the van should've.

Agreed, I think the seller might be in a bit of trouble as well.

I think this was preliminary mis-information. I've just heard that along with the VIN number being scratched out and cash being paid for the SUV off of craigslist, the terrorist STOLE plates from a junkyard and used them on the newly purchased SUV, all to avoid being tracked down.

If the craigslist seller gave his old plates to a junkyard, if that is actually true, he's an idiot. I think you would just turn them into the DMV upon the sale.

what I cant understand is, if he (the suspect) was gonna blow up the SUV anyway, why bother paying for it? Might as well steal a car and some plates.

I'm sure there is a good few days prepping for something like this. Probably didn't want to tip off the authorities ahead of time while trying to prepare by traveling in a stolen vehicle. So the guy wasn't a total idiot, although he's a crappy bomb maker, and was trying to get this carried out.
