For the most part, a grown man need not ask permission. Married couples ought to agree on the budget -- allocation of resources matters. And, not buying crap you can't afford matters a lot. But specific items, eh. She cares about my opinion, and I hers ... but if there's a specific kind of make-up or shoes or whatever she wants, and it's budgeted for, go for it. If there's a toy, or gun, or power tool, or whatever, I want, and it's budgeted for -- that's all the 'support' I need.

If it's in the budget, I buy what I want. If it's not, I don't. Lately, "what I want" hasn't really been 'collectibles', though. Bought a few McFarlane Walking Dead figures a few weeks back. That's probably the first I've bought in a year.

"Wife or girlfriend" supportive of our hobby? Who's to say we're all dudes here? :slap

Most here are guys, so it's a fair generalization. He also specifically asked 'guys'.

But, I think the real assumption was that husbands or boyfriends wouldn't be as disapproving as wives or girlfriends. Because guys tend to like this stuff ... and chicks tend not to.

And, gender-neutralizing language is clumsy and annoying. He/she/they, boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife, 'significant other'. Blah. It's easy enough to infer what he meant without all that nonsense, and answer accordingly.
