It's good to know the the Tolkien discussion on the Freaks board will now be going strong for the next several years.

Oh yeah!! For those that missed it you just might see what it was sort of like back in the day. When LOTR ruled the board and things where much calmer.

I know there has been a tiny bit of a trend to see the LOTR fans as "yesterday's board" in a sense--but with this news, LOTR is heading right back to the forefront. Of course, we also have the CGI and live action Star Wars TV shows, so both properties will be going strong for the next few years.

My big question is whether Sideshow's past history and ongoing relationship with New Line will give them a foot in the door when it comes time to hand out the merchandising licenses, or whether Weta will try to go it alone as they did with Narnia and Kong.

Imagine the worldwide craziness of merchandising from The Hobbit without Sideshow picking up the rights...

Haven't been able to stop smiling since I read about this earlier today. And strange squeaking noises keep escaping from my lips at the most inappropriate times/places. Haven't been able to stop smiling since I read about this earlier today.

I've been smiling most of the day as well. I announced the good news to my co-workers and I got several responses from a blank stare to a condescending smile followed by, "DORK!" to a concerned look followed by, "Does this mean you're going to spend more money on collectibles?"

I'm happy about the news. In fact, I never would have imagined that it would ever be pulled off. But I'm approaching it with cautious optimism. Just too many loose ends to tie up right now to be cutting cartwheels, and 2010 is still a ways off for things to change -- for better or for worse.

But at least now we have something to analyze to death for the next two years.

With all due respect to the enthusiasm on display, I have to say that I am actually pretty unhappy about the news. Splitting it into two movies, and injecting the Dol Guldur and White Council sequences, will destroy the flow of the narrative, and ruin the charm of the real story. I'm actually pretty bummed right now.

Dol Guldur and the White Council are important to the history of Middle-earth, but they have nothing to do with the story of The Hobbit. If they had been important to that story, wouldn't you suppose Tolkien would have added them when he revised the story to remove the conflicting elements from it?

If it does work out that way, and there is no "cliff-hanger" at the end of The Hobbit, then I'll be very happy. I'll gladly go see the first movie, and just pretend that the second never existed.

Sorry, Robo but I don't think many are gonna feel the same. There's no reason to be bummed about this what so ever IMO. First off the I think The Hobbit movie will follow the book with some added stuff I'm sure. The other movie will most likely cover the other things. Therefore keeping it all as one. Honestly, even if they tweak it a little I'm fine in that there's so much cool info that should see the big screen. Plus these have to be made in the same way LOTR was to keep the flow but also so NON-LOTR fans go see it. Again, there HAS to be some tweaking.
