I know there has been a tiny bit of a trend to see the LOTR fans as "yesterday's board" in a sense--but with this news, LOTR is heading right back to the forefront. Of course, we also have the CGI and live action Star Wars TV shows, so both properties will be going strong for the next few years.
My big question is whether Sideshow's past history and ongoing relationship with New Line will give them a foot in the door when it comes time to hand out the merchandising licenses, or whether Weta will try to go it alone as they did with Narnia and Kong.
Imagine the worldwide craziness of merchandising from The Hobbit without Sideshow picking up the rights...
