hmmm

perhaps I'd resent the Burton films as much as I do the Nolan ones now.

I guess this is both why any given Burton Batman figure feels as special as it does and why I should be thankful they are so few and unobsessed over by fandom.

Very well then. See you all in a few weeks when I've forgotten this conversation and resume my Nolan hate. :D

Both right. If there had been a company producing HT-level Batman collectibles in 1989...and the internet was as ubiquitous then as it is now so Batman fan collectors had a messageboard anything like this back then...I'd bet my last dollar that the hysteria surrounding the Burton Batman products (praise AND nitpicking AND demand for custom commissions to take them to the "next level") would be leagues beyond anything we've experienced from the most hard core nitpickers among the Nolan fans.

It's just about timing. Products based on the Nolan trilogy benefited from the perfect storm of being released at a time when highly-detailed collectibles were becoming more popular and widely accessible than ever before, (not to mention the internet making worldwide communication and the selling/trading of that product much easier than it was in 1989). But even with all of the volume of Nolan product (and discussion/nitpicking/moaning) about that product, it PALES in comparison to the Batmania of 1989. Could you imagine this board if it (and Hot Toys Batman stuff of this quality) existed back then? I have no doubt it would be much more intense than even the highest moments of Nolan fan hype in 2007/2008.

DM knows his ****. :lecture

Hot Toys obviously took advantage of the popularity of the Nolan films but I think it's somewhat exaggerated to be truthful. They released six Batman figures and four Joker figures. There was three of the Batman Begins suits I believe and three of The Dark Knight/The Dark Knight Rises style. Joker had four releases but let's be honest the first attempt wasn't great. Then they did the Bank Robber version and the two DX versions. So while I agree that Hot Toys cashed in somewhat it's not as bad as some people make it out to be.

There's not as many Burton figures likely because of the fact that those films are older and while they have a fan base I would guess that the Nolan stuff sells better because it's current.

I'm just saying it's not like Iron Man levels where every variation that was shown for five seconds gets a figure made.

*ahem*

I have a question for those of you who have been collecting for a long time. What are some other figures that took a ridiculous amount of time between their coming soon notice and their actual release? I only started with the 89 keaton so I have no idea what the average wait time is between the first hint of a line and when they are shipped out.

Reeve Superman

People went apeshit about that one.

Good god, yes. I was among them, and I'm still bitter about that one. We still haven't seen that DX that they promised all those years ago.:lol Not really, Reeve Supes is one of my all time favorites that they've done, so, if that's all we get, I'm content (two releases is pretty damn good, actually), but I'd still love to see a new one at some point, with Kent gear and another sculpt.

How long were the waits? Are we talking years like in this case?

Yep, Superman was about three years. 89 was about a year between the first license announcement, and the actual figures being shown. Returns and Arkham have been delayed going on two years as of last month, but, to put things in perspective, that Smooth Criminal Michael Jackson has been delayed for over three, I believe.

To be fair, that was mostly a reuse of the other Begins figures, though, and it, technically, wasn't its own release, either.:lol
