Gotta side with Shadow on this one. Marty, Doc, and the Delorean are pretty widely recognized icons of pop-culture. And the films (at least the first one) is easily in the company of those other films mentioned. I wouldn't put it second to Star Wars in terms of awareness (hell, Jesus is second to Star Wars), but it is up there.

I bet most of the public would be hard pressed to even name any of the actors in those movies

I have to respectfully disagree. I think people could name Johnny Depp or Arnold or Bruce Willis or Keanu as readily as they can MJ Fox. Like I said, I know you personally love BTTF but that doesn't make it more popular than it is.

And don't get me wrong, I love BTTF too or I wouldn't be here but I just have to disagree with the level of universal appeal you suggest. Next to Star Wars and Indy it's BTTF? Really?

But look, here's an example, there's an Alien/Predator/Terminator section here with hundreds of threads... and there's not a BTTF section. That has to say something.

But I agree that Alien/Termie/etc are totally different than BTTF in tone obviously; I was bringing up mostly 80's franchises as examples of movies more popular than BTTF and not specifying only films of similar tone or what you may call 'family entertainment'.

Wor Gars right if you think about it, I'm not saying I like it but it's true, BttF is still very well known though.

But you have a whole 20 year gap now of people growing into adults with no BttF movie, it's a fresh new movie that pulls in millions of people. They have however been exposed to a wealth of those other franchises, unfortunately, but they had 3 SW movies, an IJ, 2 Terminators, and 2 AVPS. Yea the movies suck but they helped introduce alot of the younger generation to that subject matter. Theres a reason they shut down the BttF ride, it's just not as relevant as it was when we were younger, trust me, my friend's kids don't know who Marty McFly is. :( We had the time machine and Ecto-1, they have Bumblebee and the Tumbler.

Most of the existing merchendise is now dependant on the hardcore fans, it's why Matty tryed to make the Ghostbusters exlusive to collector's instead of in store releases and can't even afford to do Bttf at all. Where as Alien/Predator/Termiantor, still have all of us older guys and picked up millions of new fans. It's upto us becoming the parents at this point to keep things like Bttf relevant by showing it to them.

Yeah, Aliens & Robots is the name -- I should know because I suggested it -- but look at the threads -- it might as well be those three films almost exclusively.

Almost is there so you won't start whining about "hey avatar is there, and blah blah".

Oh I'm not whining. I was just clearing it up because that section is titled such so you can lump together those films and others that fall into that category. BTTF is not easily categorised and therefore that is why it does not have it's own section.

This does not prove nor disprove it's popularity compared to those films you mentioned.

And can they name Arnold's character in Predator? Any of the characters names in Jaws? Anyone besides Ellen Ripley in Alien?

At the very least, there is no way at all BTTF is not in the same league as those.

But look, here's an example, there's an Alien/Predator/Terminator section here with hundreds of threads... and there's not a BTTF section. That has to say something.
It says to me that this is a collector's forum and while those other movies have been marketed to hell, there has been practically no BTTF merchandise in the past 20 years other than toy cars.

Theres a reason they shut down the BttF ride, it's just not as relevant as it was when we were younger,
Actally that one is a fairly confusing decision. Its not as if the Simpsons is any more relevant.

trust me, my friend's kids don't know who Marty McFly is.
But are they familliar with Seriff Brody, Quint, Ellen Ripley, Sarah Connor, John McClaine, ect?

My two year old nephews both know who Marty Mcfly is.

I remember a couple years back when Michael J Fox came to my college to give a lecture promoting his new book. Keep in mind all of the students weren't eve born when the first BTTF came out. Campus went nuts, with people camping out in the lecture hall for a day before he came to speak just to get a spot. When he got out of his limo they had to bring town police in to keep the poor man from getting rushed. "Current" celebrities come to campus a few times a year and not a single other one of them has recieved that kind of attention.

Of course weather or not this licence becomes a priority depends on the success of the initial figures, but 2013 does seem so far to be a relativly clear time for thier lineup.

Let's be honest here, Planet of the Apes is more or less a dead franchise. While the original definatly lives on in the american consciousness as certain quotes and imagery, the movies themselves doesn't have quite the timeless staying power as the BTTF movies do. BTTF is really second only to Star Wars in terms of the public's gerneral familliarity with the plot and characters.

Hyperbole much?

You want honesty... look at the prices of those Hot Toys POTA Gorillas on the secondary market. The first three sold amazingly well enough for them to consider (some HT insiders of this message board have leaked) a second wave, They just haven't gotten around to it. To them there are bigger fish to fry. Avengers, anyone?

Also, the worldwide gross of Rise of the Planet of the Apes was greater than both Thor and Captain America.

Dead franchise my a$$. :nana: :nana: :nana:

And if you guys think that Hot Toys will make figures beyond Marty and Doc are kidding themselves. :stick

Well il agree with you there. But I do think there will be a couple variants of each character.

And can they name Arnold's character in Predator? Any of the characters names in Jaws? Anyone besides Ellen Ripley in Alien?

Well to be fair I was reponding to your answer about people recognizing "actors" not "characters names". I would concede that most everyone knows McFly's character name over Arnold character name in Predator, etc.

But I still disagree with your overall valuation of BTTF to the masses. I think the collecting world, toys, success of rides, etc all indicate its popularity, regardless of how many people remember it or remember it fondly.

But look, we're gonna disagree about this, no biggie. My opinion has no more or less validity than yours.

BTTF is not easily categorised and therefore that is why it does not have it's own section.

I wasn't calling you a whiner, sir. :)

And if Indiana Jones gets a section, and Whedonville gets a section, and GI Joe gets a section...why not BTTF if its the next thing next to SW and Indy?

Like I said, no merchandise. Until recently, MJF has refused to give likeness rights. And without being able to make anything featuring your main character, you can't really do much with any other characters either. Think where Star Wars merchandise would be today without any products that use the image of a character?

That's true, very good point!

That fact never crossed my mind either, I was like "Oh yeeaaahhhh." :lol

Very True, Star Wars can thank the prequels for a boost in recognition amongst the latest generation, but it's the unmatched level of merchandising that inundates the global population with all things Star Wars and perpetuates the awareness.

Wait, what are we talking about again?

One thing's for certain, we'll see very soon how the BTTF madness fairs. I just hope if they're gonna do Marty that they do Doc. I'll only get into this license if they do both figures.

I'd love to get the car but I just don't have the room.
