So is Captain America popular in Japan/H.K?

Since the moment I heard HT had the licence I kinda had 'wtf?' type feelings.

I mean unlike Batman, Spidey etc, this characters whole purpose is to represent a specific country. From his origins to his attire, he is meant to illustrate patriotism for America. I knew he would be a hit here in the states, but didnt know how the rest of the world felt about this particular character. Im not biased towards any country what-so-ever but I honestly wouldn't care for or want (although I would respect it) a character that is a symbol for a specific country other than my own, for the sole purpose of the character not being relatable.

Its funny though, because the Japan/H.K/International fans in general will probably eat this up regardless. But how many American fans would even care for a "Captain Asia/*Insert Random Country*" film or figure?

...Kinda makes you think
Tough to say, because, first, the comic books and geekdom broadly defined that dominate Hot Toys' licenses were largely created in the USA. And during the Cold War, a patriotic hero made sense and was understandably popular here.

Things have changed now, of course. Comic books and all the off-shoots of that are a worldwide phenomenon. Kids in Japan and Russia can read about Spiderman and Superman nearly as easily as kids here can. So, those audiences are probably familiar with Cap, and might have enjoyed his stories. Most of Cap's stories don't beat you over the head with some jingoistic ideology, so even folks bothered with American hegemony, etc. might have enjoyed reading about his exploits if they could just look past his outfit.

Impossible to put ourselves in others' shoes, though, because they didn't create patriotic characters that were disseminated and appreciated by the rest of the world. Not that I'm aware of, anyway.

While I can't speak for sure that Captain America is or isn't popular in Asia itself, my guess is that it has more to do with the Marvel Studios film than anything else. US films abroad usually do substantially better than they do here and knowing that Marvel is usually amazingly successful in various parts of the world (even their "flops" here were good moneymakers in various parts of the world) they just want a chance to hit the cash pinata and get their money.

I would wager that Captain America himself is planned and whether they go in-depth will depend on the film's financial successes but they know at least the titular character will sell without much issue.

Right I can't imagine the figure itself not selling well. This is the type of figure I think HT does its best at same as they've done with Iron Man, Ghost Rider, and Thor.

:goodpost:

Steve Roger's Captain America always seemed chiefly about an ideal of democratic freedom with cross-national appeal, rather than the realities of post-WWII American foreign policy. I read some Captain America when I was a kid (I loved the Diamondback/Serpent Society stories) and he clearly followed his own moral code, regardless of the government.

Additionally Cap comes out of America"s intervention in the Second World War, which is still viewed as an almost uniformly positive thing...unless I suppose you are a Nazi. :wink1: On the other hand I thought Mark Millar's portrayal of Cap in the Ultimates was more interesting and perhaps more realistic in terms of adjusting to society fifty years later. Additionally think the Comedian for a dark spin, from another non-American author no less, on a 'patriotic' hero who is a tool of the U.S. government.

EDIT:

Check and mate.

The Ultimates was really the best depiction of Cap imo.
Not a Brubaker fan, especially after reading an interview with the guy.
Most people who dont like Ultimate Cap usually sight his overly macho attitude or that he's too overtly patriotic/jingoistic and one dimensional.
But I think people forget or over look some other scenes from the Ultimates that fleshed out Ultimate Steve Rogers.

Cap looks up Bucky: Cap visits an elderly Bucky Barnes who continued to age while Cap was frozen. (and didnt become the Winter soldier)
Steve reminisces with Bucky on the front porch and confesses he feels lost and decries how much the country has changed and that his teammates
arent wild about him(..and even sheds a tear or two)
Bucky not sure how to react excuses himself but his wife tells him "Youre his only real friend, get back out there and help him."

Cap pukes: After leading the rest of the Ultimates in victory over the alien invasion and making the famous "France" quote, the enormity of the situation finally catches up to him.
He excuses himself and goes behind a truck to vomit.
Super soldier serum enhanced, but still just a man.

Theres some other defining moments in the series that made Cap the best version yet.

The ultimates version is pretty cool. Been reading Cap again since his death/rebirth which is Brubaker and for me personally I really like how that story line has been going since I came back.

agree on the "like the costume...not the helmet. Think they should of just went ahead and copied the early ultimates version with the normal looking helmet and goggles.

Since both Thor and Captain America movie is going to be released close to each other, why do we already have a Thor figure with official specs, but no prototype of Captain America form Hot Toys yet?

2 months isn't that close... that means Hot Toys can easily show us Captain America in 2 months and it be the same time from the movie as when the Thor specs were released.

I hope we get something Monday though as that is when the teaser will be available after the Superbowl.

I hope they give us a real metal shield with the red & blue paint app. It would really make it stand out. Sort of like how the latest Preds have the metal blades.
