Of course SW is political!
The difference here is that Filoni and Favreau went OUT. OF. THEIR. WAY. to 1. make compelling new characters that we already love this short of a time in and 2. MOST IMPORTANTLY, They rescue characters that were done wrong and restore their former lustre. See Boba Fett, see Luke Skywalker.
Dude. I can buy a copy of "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" right now, today so I guess that has "stood the test of time," as in its a film that still exists. Revered, no I dont think so.
I would say AotKT is actually a better film than TLJ. I wasn't outraged, I just regretted the violent wastage of so many good tomatoes. Don't wantonly smash them, let's make pasta dishes! Whereas TLJ still makes me nauseous.
Actually, you're talking about the restricted Filoni in Mando season 1, he was actually under Favreau's command to learn about live action production while the show was being made, but Filoni is a storyteller that would make TLJ Luke just like RJ did within the possibilities that JJ left open.
Filoni doesn't give a damn about the fans' reception over his ideas, if he thinks it's right for the story he does the thing, because for him what matters is to expand the Star Wars mythology, always adding new concepts and character development to further improve this universe. For example: he retcon Ahsoka book and Kanan book in Clone Wars s7 and Bad Batch on pure whim to fit his ideas.
Just compare how things changed in storytelling from season 1 to season 2 (which is clearly more Filoni than Favreau).
Filone(the right sucessor of George Lucas) is the guy who add time travel, expanded midclorians concepts, Space Whales who can travel through hyperspace and mystic creatures all from the legends canon into Star Wars main canon, in terms of creative storytelling he is equal to RJ, they both wanted to discuss and criticize the actual role of the Jedi within the force. The Filone Luke would fight the exact same way that Crait Luke did in TLJ, Mando Luke is the explanation for the why TLJ Luke exist, but to understand that you need to THINK and see under the layers of the cool scenes.
About your "rescue and restore characters that were done wrong":
Luke is pure aesthetics who fights with his laser sword and say "i am" to the question "are you a jedi?", is it awesome? yes i cried, but it is to show how much of a prequel jedi he had become to foreshadow his fall in the ST (Just like Yoda in the PT in comparisson to his OT self).
Boba has a little bit of character development from his post ROTJ, bringing back its development to the audience who didn't remember his backstory from the PT\CW, but its just a tease for his own show, even the script of this episode was tiny, Robert Rodriguez had to improvise to fill the time.
About the "stood the test of time", do you really not understand what I mean by that? Its not about physical availability, but subjective quality over time, there are a bunch of movies that is misunderstood in the time of release that takes time for the people to realize what the movie was really about, and this is what "stood the test of time" means.
