God i hope this ships out today.
Sweet thanks bro. I cast my UU head and used it for my SS Luke Stormtrooper. Helmet had to be trimmed a bit because of the hair but works pretty good.
"LEIA! HEAR ME!"
Great Jodie Foster sculpts.
The Very Good:
1: The sheer scale and amount of stuff in the box. It’s unprecedented. 2 complete figures, a load of accessories, pleather, fabric, and LED lights. Everything you could ask for really. Layer after layer of stuff, it’s a little overwhelming actually, in a good way.
2: Box is very nice, more of an Indy DX box shape than the smaller recent sets. To see a Hot Toys box with the Star Wars logo emblazoned across it is just amazing. A dream come true for many collectors, none more so than me. The laser cut inset is just a piece of card, but coming from a design background myself, I really appreciate it.
It’s quite beautiful.
3: The base, it’s very cool and perfectly captures that basic McQuarrie design style.
Looks like it’s straight out of the movie. Some assembly required (with screws, a first I think from HT?).
4: The exclusive Vader head, it’s beautiful. And the painted eyes are awesome.
The Good:
1: Accessories: The guns are cool, best Star Wars pistols I’ve seen in this scale. The saber’s hilts are pretty good, but not quite as sharp in molding and paint application as Medicom’s recent light up version, but the clear plastic sabre itself is far superior in shape than the Medi, but a little short. Nothing too noticeable though.
2: The Stands are nice, the basic HT one is cool just to see the Star Wars logo on it, the Freezing chamber one is nice but not sure I love the shape.
3: The sculpts: Much better in person than I have seen on any of the pics, there is some Hamill in there when angled correctly. Bizarrely when you take the hair pieces off, when he is bald, you can completely get it’s Hamill. Even though the hair pieces themselves are very detailed and the paint is good, I was worried they were going to use those metallic paints they used on the recent Captain America headsculpts which I hated, but no, the hair is good.
The face sculpts themselves are good, but in my honest opinion the PERS really knock off some points here. The eye sockets are just too big. The eyeballs themselves are pretty flush with the eyelids so we are not in Indiana Jones territory here, but I think the sculpts would have been spectacular without PERS, especially the BD head.
I still see a touch of the soft vinyl, red sprayed look that recent HT sculpts have been plagued with. And those early pics from JP were 100% pics of this figure, just very bad ones. But it doesn’t look good from all angles. Quality wise it’s somewhere between Sparrow and Indy. Good but not spectacular. But are these the best Luke heads ever released? Yes, absolutely, there’s nothing else in HT’s league obviously.
And the sheer joy of getting a Bespin Luke of this quality will undoubtedly overshadow most peoples issues with the sculpts.
The OK:
The costumes are not up to recent HT levels of finesse and quality. The stitching is quite crude in places and personally I think this is where the cost saving has been implemented to provide such a large expansive set. If you look at the tailoring on the recent Avenger figures (Fury, Hawkeye) you will see just how fine and invisible HT can make seams when the budget allows, these, well, they are a little rough around the edges, like Indy’s shirts. Likewise the belts, look great but a little crude in places.
The Boots: these look great but seriously effect posability, they are pretty stiff, I completely see where OMG was coming from when he mentioned that Luke was hard to pose.
None of this stuff is a deal breaker and with a bit of modding and wethering these outfits could look a lot better.
The Bad:
PERS and eye sockets on BD head. Hate them. It’s all very subjective, but to me he looks like he has had a bad eyebag removal procedure. Sparrows PERS are still the pinnacle to me because the sculpt was made to fit around the PERS smoothly.
Don’t get me wrong the BD figure is still very cool, but it does look a bit weird.
Overall: Fantastic set, not perfect, but very good. The less discerning collector will have no issues at all, whilst long term HT fans may raise an eyebrow regarding some of the quality. 8/10.
Next.
I searched for a bit of Hamill, I think you can see it in the first pic.. these are straight out of box.
