I wouldn't be surprised if Lucas set up a few shots in the newer Star Wars films this way--as a composite between models and cgi---despite all of the ILM power he could throw at it to make it digital-only.
Models still get used, albeit with a lot of computer effects incorporated. Here's a featurette on a model they used for the first Transformers film:They don't use models anymore do they? except digital form... the last I remember in the late 90's using models was Cameron.
I believe some models were built for at least Episode 1 of the new Star Wars movies. I thought models were still used to help build the computer models.
Actually, AOTC used more scale model sets than any SW film before it (particularly the Geonosis stuff).
