Scale this baby up and you have EPIC WIN- HT can just copy it (few warts but oh well...)

That Keaton to Batman figure was neat(Keaton sculpt was very good) but, i always loved playing with my ToyBiz round jaw Keaton Batman more then that one.

It was fun, but Batman looked like a bobblehead, it's only real value was as a Wayne figure.

Nice! But it was only advertised, never released [as it appears there, with the Joker stickers for the monitors], right? I remember Christmas '92 when I opened that huge box for the first time, and painstakingly applied all of the stickers and the roof part per the instructions (I remember I was a little nervous with the "one time assembly! once put together cannot be taken apart!" warnings). Best. Christmas. Evar.

Correct, it was never released for TDKC. It was supposed to come out in fall of '91 but Kenner figured since Returns was right around the corner they'd just market it as such. The only pictures that exist are of the ones you see above. I have the Kenner employee/customer relations book that had this stuff in it from 1990. Really the only evidence of it's existence. It's a shame because that would have been one of the most accurate playsets to date. If you look closely, even the Axis Chemicals railing is red/orange, just like in the film. Atleast it came out for Batman Returns though (definitely one of my favorite toys ever), it's just a pity it was never produced the way it was "meant to be". Ironically there's like 8 more variations with garish colors. The Batman Returns and Batman Animated Series versions were the only good ones.

No, THIS would be the best,

Something still fascinates me with the grungy look of that Gotham. Maybe because it was a model so it never looked like a real place but only somewhere you would imagine Batman. Also it's insane how high that Cathedral was.

Did anyones heart ever flutter when they first saw the film due to the height of the buildings?

I can't believe how high that model is. I love how it was all done. Build an actual size Gotham that goes up about 2-3 stories at Pinewood, make the rest from models and matte paintings.

They don't use models anymore do they? except digital form... the last I remember in the late 90's using models was Cameron.

I believe some models were built for at least Episode 1 of the new Star Wars movies. I thought models were still used to help build the computer models.

It's a shame too many is now digital and if it's not that it's too much motion blur.

They still use models today, but not exclusively just the models as much. What I mean by that is they will often shoot a model and then add some cgi to the shot in post. One of the shots of the exterior of the mountain monastery in Begins was done this way, and I wouldn't be surprised if Lucas set up a few shots in the newer Star Wars films this way--as a composite between models and cgi---despite all of the ILM power he could throw at it to make it digital-only.

There's something to be said for craftmanship involved in creating such a huge and detailed model though, but I'd be so nervous working on that set. Imagine if you trip!

Not anymore. :lol

Models still get used, albeit with a lot of computer effects incorporated. Here's a featurette on a model they used for the first Transformers film:

Actually, AOTC used more scale model sets than any SW film before it (particularly the Geonosis stuff).
