I think you're thinking of the coloring of Whiplash's jumpsuit. Apparently that orange suit was copyrighted or something so ALL Whiplash merch had him in brown instead

I don't know if that's true. As far as I'm aware, you can't really trademark a colour just "by itself", ie in the absence of any identifying info as to a brand name/product.

Especially as the orange in question is a fairly common orange used in all sorts of safety/hi-vis clothing. Seems a bit sketchy to me.
