Maybe they work in small groups in desolate areas of jakku and it's for their long-term, mostly isolated with small squads and can't easily get supplies quickly.

I can rationalize it but good question.

It's just a tactical vest/harness. I assume the white panels are extra armor. My thinking is that any trooper can wear one, but heavy gunners are required to since they are a priority target in a battle.

If I were the enemy, my priority targets would be the Officers and the Squad Leaders. And how convenient that they're denoted by red and white pauldrons respectively for easy recognition. :lol

Haha! Yeah, I always think the same thing. In the real life military you aren't even supposed to salute CO's in combat because if the enemy sees it they will target commanders.

I wonder, is there anything saying what his vest is actually used for? I assume it's either extra ammo or ammo for his heavy blaster. I just find it odd that if it's a vest with extra ammo for the heavy blaster they sent them in with just the regular blaster rifles.

The DK visual guide says they're extra ammo although I'm not sure if that's from the film makers or conjecture from DK.
As for why another guy would be carrying ammo for the heavy gunner, in the military the SAW Gunner is supported by an assistant gunner carrying extra ammo for him in a two man team. Maybe the Jakku Excl. Stormtrooper is an assistant for the heavy gunner? :dunno

Not a bad idea.

The "real-world" explanation is that the pauldrons weren't well thought-out in ANH, they were strictly there as a visual. There's a lot of that in SW. You could rationalize it after the fact, by saying the Empire during ANH was militarily dominant and not technically at war, which would have made the Sandtroopers more of a police force (and they acted like it) on Tatooine.

Or, the pauldrons could have denoted units rather than rank.

Or something something something. ;)

I think it's all just ANH legacy stuff. Those don't look like ammo to me only because we've never seen anyone charge/re-load a blaster across 7 films, and there's no component on a F.O. blaster resembling that rectangle.

Or something something something.

Yeah, the Sandies to me almost seemed more like MP more than anything.

Finally broke and ordered this yesterday. Wen't with Loontentoys (HK) because of prohibitive Fedex fees from Sideshow direct. Very bad timing though as i was just reminded this is New Year's holidays over there. I believe businesses will be back online on monday but i hope they won't be too far behind with orders.

Yeah, I made a magnetic attachment for the pauldron. But what your looking at is a Squad Leader, with a hybrid of parts including the Heavy Gunner, Tie Pilot, and Snowtrooper Officer.

I just want one trooper that I can swap the parts out to make any trooper I want, or can imagine [emoji1]

Yeah the estimated times on their shop are ridiculous. Like up to a month and a half.

Got shipping confirmation today. Estimated arrival is indeed ridiculous but they are using the Economy international option so they can promote free shipping on the item listing. Add to the already pretty good deal on the figure's price.
