Hey everyone,
I just stumbled on this thread and I can not believe what I am hearing, people think hot toys figures have better sculpts over talented custom artist? Where did you think Hot toys got their talent artist from? They came from custom handmade artist that could produce figures that are better quality than what was currently being produced by toy companies at the time.
Most hot toys look like toys and the rare talented custom figure looks like a work of art. I do not mean to start up an argument but I feel someone needs to stick up for wbss21, because there is a lot of truth about what this person is saying that is a fact about some customs. So I will reply to the comments.
Not really. It's the same way one can factually say an Armani or Valentino suit is of better quality then a suit from Men's Warehouse. The stitching is better, the material is better. You can tell from the craftsmanship of a thing what kind of quality it has. You can tell the degree of quality. The same can be said when comparing the detail of one of Adam's customs to the detail of a HT sculpt, in the paint application, in the realism of the eyes, in the details of the skin and along the features, etc... It's just simply better quality. That's a fact. The same way a blu-ray disc has clearer picture and sound then a DVD or VHS tape.
It's an issue of standards, and using standards to determine a things quality.
Now, if you base quality on a thing being less detailed, being less realistic looking, etc... and you think that's what makes a thing good quality, then yes, you can say that the HT sculpts are "better".
I disagree with that part in bold, the paint applications are better on most hot toys because hot toys are painted by machines that makes them look pretty and not sloppy by novice painters. Adam is not that great of a painter that is why other artist have painted some of his sculpts.
Adam's sculpts are a higher quality than hot toys because Adam uses silicone when he sculpts his heads. That stuff makes the skin look real and is expensive. That is a
fact you can not debate that. Nevertheless that does not mean it is better.
However, many of Adams sculpts are not great as far head sculpts go in likeness, however, some of the expression variations like the laughing for variety is cool, while not the best looking one. That being said, the sculpt you have wbss21 is the best looking sculpt out there IMO as far as a Joker and Heath Ledger sculpt goes it is the best that I have seen, even if it belongs in a wax museum LOL.
Whilst I agree some of the customs you see are very impressive I personally have yet to see one that I think is better than Hot Toys one for the DX01
IMO the hot toys DX Joker sculpt sucks as far likeness and realism, how can you even think that no custom is better, even Adam's bad customs are better than that IMO. I can understand maybe the DX Joker might look cool on certain angles and might have better expressions but it fails as a sculpt as far as likeness and realism goes. Why do you think that hot toys is realising Joker 2.0? It is because they have failed three times to get any resemblance at all in heath ledger as the Joker and that is a
fact!
Am I the only person who prefers HT work to these custom jobs. They all look ugly and off to me. Not saying I could do any better though
Yes most look ugly because they are people who paint sloppy and can not sculpt at all but they are desperate to make a figure that hot toys can not sculpt either (
fact) so these people try their very best. Adam's and Bobby C's are the only decent customs I have seen. Nevertheless, they both have their flaws like sloppy paint applications.
I am someone that wants a good sculpt, the paint job comes second to me, which why I would buy either of Adam's or Bobby's sculpts, than buy poor sculpts by hot toys that have pretty paint jobs.
It's a matter of not being able to spot any Ledger resemblance in these customs. Their paint ops are horrible in my eye.
Whereas HT 'mass produced' sculpts capture the actor from every angle and they don't have that horrible real hair.
No HT do not capture the actor from every angle and they lack resemblance to Ledger, which is why customs exist in the first place, because people are desperate for likeness and realism that is not being delivered by hot toys and that is a
fact. I agree with you about the hair part though.
And yet I'm the opposite. I don't so much see the likeness in Bobby C's.
I use to think Bobby C's were not that good but look at this picture below. I thought that was by Adam, I could not believe Bobby C made it.

Not really, and if anything, SSC did the 1/4 scale thing before they did, EB and HT's only contribution was articulation. No matter what you say, expression is just as important as likeness. I don't care if it looks like a miniature clone, but I don't want a boring as hell Heath Ledger figure on my shelf, I want a figure that embodies the character just as much as the actor. HT didn't "steal" 1/4 scale either, as, last time I checked, no one has a patent on scale. Stop being so dramatic.
Does this pic below show you the expression you are looking for, since it is based on a screen clip on the dam film! Is that what you want?
Anyway, I have said my piece, I hope you can now understand why people buy customs it is because they are looking for perfection even if the customs are not your cup of tea so to speak.
